Chapter 2

"You can run, but you can't hide, Alexandra."

The voice cut through the crowd, low and dangerous. I froze. It was him—Dominic Vester, Alpha of the rogue pack and the powerful CEO of VesterCorp. His eyes locked with mine, a smirk playing on his lips. My pulse quickened.

"You hide well," he murmured, stepping closer. "But not from me."

I forced my expression to remain calm, even as my wolf stirred, clawing for control. The air around him was suffocating, a mix of power and danger that rattled my nerves.

"I don’t know what you think you know," I said, steady but tense.

"Am I wrong?" His chuckle was rich and taunting. The scent of him was intoxicating, pulling at instincts I fought to suppress.

"You’re not as hidden as you think," he continued, his voice a quiet challenge. "Especially not from me."

His gaze bore into me, piercing through my defenses. I wanted to lash out, but I held back, forcing a fragile smile. He knew too much already.

"You can keep hiding in your human skin," he said softly, "but I see you, Alexandra. All of you."

Dominic’s presence was overwhelming, but when he turned away, I exhaled shakily. Relief was fleeting, though. A chill ran down my spine. Someone else was watching.

Mark, my coworker, broke the tension with concern in his eyes. "You okay?"

"Fine," I lied, masking my unease. His lingering gaze suggested he didn’t believe me.

The night dragged on, the weight of whispers and glances pressing down on me. They all knew—or suspected.

Finally, I stepped into the cool night air, desperate for escape. My wolf clawed for release, but I held it back. Control was all I had left.

Then I saw it: an envelope beneath my door. My fingers trembled as I opened it. Inside was a photograph of me at the gala, Dominic’s eyes locked on mine. The accompanying note sent a chill through me:

"We know who you are. Run if you can."

My breath caught. I scanned the empty hallway, but it was silent. They had found me.

I clenched the note, my resolve hardening. The past was closing in, and the danger was closer than ever. I couldn’t hide anymore.

As the clock ticked closer to midnight, I found myself pacing in my small apartment. The photograph and note sat on the table, taunting me with their ominous message. Every shadow outside the window seemed to hold a threat. My wolf stirred uneasily, urging me to act, to prepare for the fight that felt inevitable.

I grabbed my phone, my fingers hovering over the screen. There was no one I could call, no one I could trust. My past had ensured that. Still, the need for action was a fire in my veins. I wasn’t going to let them corner me without a fight.

Dominic’s words replayed in my mind. He saw me, all of me. It was more than unnerving; it was infuriating. How could he see through the carefully constructed walls I had built? How could he know what even I struggled to admit?

By the time the storm outside began to wane, I had made up my mind. I wasn’t going to run. Not anymore. If they wanted me, they would have to face me on my terms.

The next morning dawned gray and overcast, mirroring the heaviness in my chest. I packed a small bag, essentials only, and slipped the photograph and note into a hidden pocket. As I left the apartment, my senses were on high alert. Every sound, every movement on the street felt amplified, as if the world itself was conspiring against me.

At work, Mark’s concern lingered. He approached me during lunch, his brow furrowed. "You seem distracted," he said. "Is everything okay?"

"Just tired," I replied, brushing off his question. But his eyes narrowed, and I knew he wasn’t convinced.

"If you need to talk, you know where to find me," he offered. There was sincerity in his voice, but I couldn’t afford to let anyone in. Not even him.

The day passed in a blur, tension coiling tighter with every passing hour. By the time I returned home, the envelope and note had vanished from my table. My heart stopped. Someone had been inside. The faintest trace of a scent lingered in the air—Dominic.

Rage flared within me. He was playing games, testing my boundaries. My wolf snarled, demanding action. For too long, I had suppressed her, but now her anger mirrored my own. It was time to stop running and start fighting.

That night, I stood on the edge of the forest, the cool wind whispering through the trees. This was where it had all begun, and this was where I would face whatever was coming. My wolf was ready, and so was I.

Dominic stepped out from the shadows, his presence as commanding as ever. "You’ve made your choice," he said, his voice low and dangerous.

I met his gaze, unflinching. "And I’m not afraid of you."

His smirk widened, a glint of approval in his eyes. "Good. Because this is only the beginning."
