Chapter 3

"We meet again," Dominic’s velvet-smooth voice filled the office, carrying a darker edge. His tall figure stood framed in the doorway, eyes locking onto mine with the precision of a predator closing in.

My heart stuttered. I had prayed to avoid him, but Dominic Vester—the Alpha from my past—was impossible to escape.

"You're still here?" he asked, his tone amused, as if daring me to deny the truth.

"I never left," I replied evenly, masking the turmoil inside.

His presence filled the room, the tension between us crackling. His smirk tightened my chest with dread—and something I refused to name.

"I’ve been watching you," he said, his voice cutting through the silence. "I know what you are, and I know what you’re running from."

His words shattered the fragile walls I had built around my secrets. Despite my composure, his gaze pierced straight through me.

"And you think you can stop me?" I countered, defiance lacing my voice.

Dominic stepped closer, his tone dark and smooth. "Not stop you. Protect you."

The word protect sent unease coursing through me. From what—or who? The faceless threats I’d felt circling me suddenly seemed more menacing with him in the picture.

"Trust me, or don’t," he said. "But the wolves circling you won’t wait for your decision."

A chill ran down my spine. The wolves. I knew what he meant—the shadows that had been closing in on me for weeks.

That night, as city lights flickered beyond my apartment window, another envelope appeared beneath my door. Inside was a photograph of Dominic and me in the office, with a blood-red X marking a familiar location on a map.

My stomach twisted. Whoever was behind this wasn’t just watching—they were closing in.

Driven by fear and desperation, I found myself at Dominic’s penthouse. "I need answers," I demanded when he opened the door, his expression unreadable.

"You’re in deeper than you realize," he said calmly, his words tinged with warning. "You’ve made your choice. Don’t think you can walk away now."

Before I could respond, the lights flickered and went out. A guttural growl echoed outside—primal, threatening.

"What’s going on?" I asked, my voice trembling despite my resolve.

Dominic remained silent, his attention fixed on the darkness beyond the glass. The growl came again, louder, closer.

Fear coiled tight in my chest as I realized I wasn’t just being watched anymore—I was being hunted.

The shadows weren’t just closing in on my life. They were here, inescapable. And Dominic? He was the only thing standing between me and the storm.

But what if that light wasn’t salvation, but another trap?

The silence in the penthouse stretched taut, broken only by the faint hum of the emergency lights flickering to life. Dominic’s gaze remained locked on the glass, his body rigid with tension. I could feel the energy radiating from him, a dangerous calm that only heightened my own fear.

"Stay behind me," he said, his voice low but firm. It wasn’t a suggestion; it was a command.

My instincts screamed to fight, to run, but the sheer gravity of his presence held me in place. I nodded, swallowing hard as my wolf stirred uneasily within me. The primal growl sounded again, closer this time, vibrating through the air like a warning.

Dominic moved with the precision of a predator, stepping toward the window. His hand rested on the edge of the curtain, ready to pull it aside. "Whoever they are, they’ve crossed a line," he muttered, more to himself than to me.

"Do you know who’s out there?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

He glanced back at me, his eyes glinting with a mix of determination and something I couldn’t decipher. "They’re not just after you. They’re making a statement."

Before I could press him for more, the window shattered, shards of glass exploding into the room. I ducked instinctively, my heart pounding as a massive shadow lunged through the opening. Dominic moved in a blur, meeting the intruder head-on with a ferocity that left me stunned.

The two figures collided, a whirlwind of snarls and claws. I scrambled backward, watching in shock as Dominic shifted mid-attack, his powerful wolf form taking over seamlessly. His movements were calculated, deadly, every strike forcing the intruder back toward the gaping window.

My wolf clawed at me from within, desperate to join the fight, but fear and uncertainty rooted me in place. I had spent so long hiding, suppressing the very part of me that now demanded to be unleashed.

The intruder let out a pained howl, retreating into the night as quickly as it had come. Dominic stood in the center of the wreckage, his chest heaving, his eyes glowing with a predatory light. He turned to me, his expression unreadable as he shifted back into his human form.

"This isn’t over," he said, his voice rough but steady. "They’ll be back."

I rose shakily to my feet, my mind racing. "Who are they? What do they want?"

He hesitated, his gaze locking onto mine. "You’re the key to something they want. Something powerful."

His words sent a chill through me. I had spent years running from my past, burying the truth of who and what I was. But now, it seemed the past wasn’t content to stay buried.

Dominic stepped closer, his presence both reassuring and intimidating. "If you want to survive this, you’ll need to trust me. Completely."

The weight of his words settled over me, heavy with implications. Trusting him meant giving up the walls I had built, the secrets I had kept. But as the shadows outside loomed closer, I realized I might not have a choice.

"I’ll fight," I said, my voice steady despite the fear gnawing at me. "But I need to know everything. No more secrets."

Dominic’s expression softened slightly, a flicker of approval crossing his face. "Then we start now."

The storm outside raged on, but within the walls of the penthouse, a new battle had begun. One that would force me to confront the shadows of my past and the truth of who I was—and who I could become.

Alpha Charles slammed the phone onto his desk, the sharp crack of plastic echoing in the tense room. His voice, low and icy, cut through the air. “She thinks she can defy me?” His claws dug into the chair, his eyes dark with fury.

I stood frozen in the doorway, my heart pounding. This wasn’t just anger—this was a storm brewing, one I wasn’t sure I could weather.

“Send a team,” he ordered. “Follow her. Watch her every move.”

A chill ran down my spine. The web of manipulation was deeper than I’d imagined, and I was already trapped in its threads.

The following days spiraled into chaos. Dominic hovered constantly, his protective instincts suffocating.

“Alexandra, don’t be reckless,” he warned as we walked. His grip on my arm tightened. “You don’t know what you’re dealing with.”

I yanked my arm free, frustration boiling over. “I’m not your prisoner, Dominic,” I snapped. “You don’t get to control me.”

His gaze darkened, and the air between us crackled with tension. He said nothing, just watched me with an intensity that made my pulse race.

I turned away, ignoring the pull that kept me tethered to him. What was he hiding?

That night, sleepless and restless, I found a folder tucked away in the house. Against my better judgment, I opened it.

It was a dossier—on me. My past, my exile, my secrets—all laid bare.

“What the hell is this, Dominic?” I demanded when he walked in, my voice trembling with anger.

“I’m trying to protect you,” he said, his tone calm but unreadable.

“Protect me?” I hissed. “You’ve been using me!”

The silence between us grew unbearable, his lack of denial cutting deeper than words.

I returned to my apartment, my mind spinning with everything I’d uncovered. But what awaited me there made my blood run cold.

Taped to my door was an envelope. My hands shook as I opened it, revealing a photograph of Alpha Charles and Hailey in a secret meeting.

Scrawled across the bottom were the words: You’re next.

The photo slipped from my fingers as realization hit. Charles wasn’t just watching me—he was orchestrating something far worse.
