Chapter 4

My father stood by the open window, his phone pressed to his ear.

He didn't pace. He didn't raise his voice. He just looked out over the Manhattan skyline.

"Julian," my father said into the receiver. "It's Jared Campbell."

A pause on the other end. Julian Vance was the managing partner at Vance & Sterling, one of the top hedge funds in the city. Leon talked about Julian like they were best friends. In reality, Julian only took Leon’s calls because my father asked him to four years ago.

"I'm calling about Leon Spencer," my father said. His voice was cold and flat. "My personal recommendation is officially withdrawn. Do what you want with that."

Another beat. My father gave a single nod.

"Thanks, Julian. Let's do lunch next week."

He tapped the screen and slid the phone back into his pocket. He turned to me and offered a small, steady smile. That was it. One minute. Ten words.

By Friday afternoon, Leon’s career was over.

A junior analyst at the firm sent a picture to my friend Dana, who forwarded it straight to me. It showed Leon standing on the sidewalk outside his office tower on Park Avenue. Two burly security guards stood behind him by the revolving glass doors.

Leon held a cheap cardboard box. Inside were a couple of coffee mugs, a desk plant, and a leather notebook. His tailored jacket looked wrinkled. His shoulders were slumped.

In the picture, Leon was staring at his phone with a blank, stunned look on his face. He had finally figured it out. He wasn't a financial genius. He wasn't a rising star. He was just a nobody wearing a borrowed suit, and the lender had called it back.

Without a job and without my cards, Leon started to panic.

He showed up in my building lobby that same evening. The doorman, Hector, had strict orders. Hector called up on the intercom while Leon shouted in the background.

"Miss Campbell, Mr. Spencer is here," Hector said calmly. "He says he needs five minutes. Should I call the police?"

"Call them if he doesn't leave in ten seconds," I said.

Through the speaker, I heard Hector’s voice turn ice-cold. "You heard her, sir. Out."

Next came the flowers. Massive arrangements of white lilies and pink peonies arrived at the front desk every morning. I didn't even let them up the elevator. I told Hector to throw them in the trash compactor.

Then came the voicemails.

My phone vibrated constantly. I didn't block his number right away because Marcus Hale told me to keep the records for our fraud case. Leon cycled through every trick he had.

In the morning, he was the weeping, broken-hearted boy. *"Ellie, please... you're my whole world. I haven't slept in three days. Just let me look at you."*

By afternoon, he was the righteous victim. *"Wrenley set me up, Ellie! You know how manipulative she is! She's trying to ruin us because she's jealous of what we have!"*

By late night, he was desperate and angry. *"After seven years, you won't even give me a phone call? You owe me that much, Ellie! Pick up the damn phone!"*

I listened to each one with a completely straight face. I didn't feel hurt. I didn't feel angry. I just felt clean. His voice sounded small and hollow, like static on a dead radio.

I never answered. Not once.

On Saturday morning, the doorbell rang.

I checked the monitor. It wasn't Leon. It was Dana Chu.

She walked in holding a paper tray with two large oat milk lattes and a box of warm croissants. Dana wore an oversized blazer and chunky boots. She took one look around the bright, sunlit living room, smelling the crisp autumn air.

"Well," Dana said, setting the coffees on the kitchen island. "It doesn't smell like his mother's awful perfume in here anymore."

"I opened the windows," I said, pulling up two stools. "And changed the locks."

Dana handed me a cup. She looked at me closely. Her dark eyes searched my face, watching the way I held my mug, the way I sat tall on the stool.

For seven years, Dana had hated Leon. She had tried to warn me about him when we first started dating. She told me he was too slick, that he talked too much about my family's money, that he never paid for dinner. But back then, I had made excuses for him. I had told her he was proud, that he was trying his best. Over time, Dana had stopped bringing it up to keep the peace.

She didn't say, *I told you so.* She didn't smirk.

She just took a slow sip of her latte and tilted her head. "So. How does it feel to look at him now?"

I took a sip of my coffee. "He left another voicemail twenty minutes ago. He was crying."

"And?"

"And I think he's completely pathetic," I said simply. My voice was calm. "I don't understand how I let him stay here. He's greasy. He talks down to the doorman. He doesn't even have good taste in shoes."

Dana blinked.

"I look at his messages," I continued, "and I don't feel a single thing. It’s like watching an insect buzz against a window. I just want someone to squash it so it gets quiet."

Dana stared at me across the marble counter. Her lips parted slightly.

A quiet, soft emotion swept across her face. It was half grief for the years I had wasted, and half pure relief.

A small, genuine smile touched the corners of her mouth. Her eyes grew shiny with tears, but she didn't let them fall.

"God," Dana whispered, letting out a breath she seemed to have held for years. "She's back. The real you is finally back."
