Chapter 5

Marcus Hale sat across from me at my dining table. He placed three thick black binders on the glass.

My mother sat to my left, holding a cup of black coffee. She hadn't touched it. My father stood behind my chair. His arms were crossed over his chest, his face dark and still.

Marcus adjusted his glasses and opened the first binder.

"The civil fraud case is ready, Ellie," Marcus said. His voice was calm and steady. "We went through seven years of bank statements, wires, and forged credit authorizations. Leon drained over eight hundred thousand dollars from your accounts. He used your money to pay for his mother’s rent, his car, and Wrenley’s private medical bills."

Marcus tapped the second binder.

"Then there is the physical assault," he continued. "We pulled the surveillance footage from the City Clerk’s office. It’s high-definition. It shows Leon shoving you backward with force. Your head hits the marble floor. You lose consciousness instantly. Dr. Owens has provided the full medical file. Concussion. Traumatic head injury. Memory loss."

Marcus leaned forward and tapped the third binder.

"I had breakfast with an old colleague at the district attorney’s office this morning," Marcus said. "Between the physical violence and the financial fraud, this goes far beyond a civil dispute. This is aggravated assault and grand larceny. If we file the criminal complaint, Leon faces five to ten years in state prison."

I didn't move.

I sat with my back straight against the leather chair. My hands rested flat on the cool glass. I didn't fidget. I didn't blink. I didn't look at the binders. My breathing was so light my chest barely rose.

People always got uncomfortable when I went quiet like this. Leon used to hate it. He used to wave a hand in front of my face and call me robotic. He liked when I cried. He liked when I got hysterical because it gave him something to soothe.

My father’s large hand came down gently on my shoulder. His grip was warm and steady.

I looked up at Marcus. I only had two questions.

"How long?" I asked.

"The emergency freeze on his accounts is already done," Marcus replied smoothly. "The civil summons will be served to him by Monday morning. The police report is on the detective's desk right now. He won't have time to catch his breath."

"How complete?" I asked.

Marcus smiled. It was a thin, predatory smile.

"He will lose the apartment. He has already lost his job. He will have no money, no credit, and a criminal record," Marcus said. "The case is airtight, Ellie. By the time we are finished, he will have nothing."

I looked at the black binders.

Seven years of my life were trapped between those pages. Seven years of dinners, vacations, rent payments, and lies. I felt no sorrow. I felt no heartbreak. The only thing in my chest was a sharp, cold focus.

I gave a single nod.

"Proceed," I said.

Marcus and my parents left at two o’clock.

My mother kissed my forehead before she walked out. "Get some rest, darling. You have your follow-up scan with Dr. Owens tomorrow morning."

"I will, Mom," I said.

The door clicked shut. The condo was quiet again.

I poured myself a glass of water and sat by the open living room window. The autumn breeze swept across the hardwood floor.

At five o’clock, my phone rang.

It was Dana.

"Ellie," Dana said immediately. Her voice was tight. "Greg just called me."

Greg was an old classmate from college. He still went to the same gym as Leon and moved in the same social circles.

"Leon tracked Greg down at a coffee shop in Midtown thirty minutes ago," Dana said. "Leon looked completely unhinged. Dark circles under his eyes. Desperate. He bought Greg a coffee and started begging for information about you."

I took a slow sip of water. "And Greg told him?"

"Leon wore him down," Dana sighed. "Greg felt put on the spot. He let it slip that you have a follow-up neurology appointment tomorrow morning at Mount Sinai."

"I see," I said quietly.

"That’s not even the crazy part," Dana continued. Her tone turned sharp with disgust. "Greg walked out of the cafe and watched Leon from across the street. Leon was pacing on the sidewalk. He had a garment bag in his hand. Greg saw him pulling out that custom charcoal Tom Ford suit. The one you bought him for his birthday two years ago."

I remembered that suit. It had cost four thousand dollars. I paid for it without blinking because Leon said he needed to look the part for his firm.

"Greg said Leon was literally talking to himself," Dana said. "He was practicing in the reflection of a shop window. Rehearsing his lines. Trying out different sad expressions. He was constructing a whole performance. He's going to corner you at the hospital tomorrow, Ellie."

"He can try," I murmured.

"And Ellie?" Dana lowered her voice. "Greg overheard Leon making a phone call right after. He put his phone on speaker while he zipped his suit bag. He was calling Wrenley."

"What did he say to her?"

"Wrenley has been staying at some cheap budget motel off Queens Boulevard," Dana said. "She was crying on the phone. Complaining about cramps, morning sickness, having no money for food. And do you know what Leon said to her?"

"Tell me."

"He snapped at her," Dana said. "He told her, 'Shut your mouth and stay in that motel room. Don't you dare show your face at Mount Sinai tomorrow. I'm going to fix things with Ellie, and you're going to ruin it.' Then he hung up on her mid-sentence. He didn't even check to see if she agreed."

I looked out at the city. The sun was dipping behind the skyscrapers, casting long orange shadows across Manhattan.

Leon was putting on his most expensive suit. He was practicing his sad face in a shop window. He thought he could write one more script, shed a few tears, and slide right back into my life.

He thought I was still the girl who gave him everything.

"Let him come," I told Dana softly.

I hung up the phone and set it on the table.

Tomorrow morning, Leon would give the performance of his life. And I would make sure it was his last.
