Chapter 4

Noah pressed his small finger against the bold black letters spelling out the word Saturday. "Is Montauk further away than my birthday?"

"He knows the date," I told him, keeping my voice steady. "He signed this paper himself."

Noah did not cry. He walked over to his backpack, his small sneakers quiet on the hardwood floor. He unzipped the front pocket and pulled out two paper crowns he had colored that morning. Gold crayon covered the jagged edges. He placed one on the kitchen island.

Then, he walked to the trash can and dropped the second crown inside.

"Can we cut the cake for three people instead?" Noah asked, looking at the lone crown on the granite counter.

"Three?"

"You, me, and the magician you hired."

"Yes," I said. "Just the three of us."

I pulled out my phone and opened Ryan's contact. I did not type any familiar pet names. I typed his full name into a new text thread, stripping away any lingering warmth.

Saturday. 4:00 PM. You get thirty minutes. No make-up dates.

I hit send.

The next morning at nine, I angled my laptop camera away from Noah's scattered toys and clicked the meeting link.

Jonah Pierce sat in a glass-walled office in Seattle, a massive skyline visible behind him. "I need a producer who doesn't rely on a million-dollar smile to carry the hour," Jonah said, leaning forward until his shoulders filled the frame. "Pitch me a segment that works without a celebrity anchor."

"Local rental price gouging," I fired back. "School lunch debt tracking. Neighborhood disaster prep plans."

"That sounds like local news, Claire. I run a prime-time broadcast."

"You run a broadcast losing its key demographic," I countered, leaning closer to the camera. "You don't need a star if you make the viewer's actual life the prime-time focus. The audience tunes in because they want to feel seen, not because they want to look at a tailored suit. You put the camera on the unpaid lunch bills, and the community will carry the ratings."

Jonah tapped his silver pen against his desk, assessing me. "I know who you are. You built Ryan Bennett's viral empire from the shadows. You wrote the lines that made America trust him."

"I did."

"Are you ready to put your own name on the line and own the failure if this tanks?"

"I am ready to own the success," I corrected him.

A sharp smile broke across Jonah's face. "KPNW offers a two-year contract. Executive Producer title. Full relocation package. We can adjust the production meetings around your son's school dismissal."

"My son is not a marketing tool," I stated, drawing a hard line. "We do not package my family for the network. He stays off-camera, always."

Jonah typed something on his keyboard, the clacking loud through the speakers. "Done. I don't care who his father is. I care if you can run my control room. You have seventy-two hours to sign."

After the noon broadcast, I found Ryan in the anchor dressing room.

He turned from the mirror, holding a green plastic T-Rex. He closed the distance between us, stepping into my personal space and wrapping his arms around my waist from behind.

"We sign the renewal next week," Ryan murmured near my ear, his voice dropping into that practiced, intimate register. "Think about the Brooklyn brownstone, Claire. Sunday breakfasts on the balcony. Just the three of us. We are so close."

I shoved his arms away and faced him, putting a vanity chair between us. "Is the Montauk trip canceled?"

Ryan set the dinosaur on the counter, his jaw tightening. "I can't cancel a sponsored network event. But I will drive back as soon as the cameras cut. Don't ruin our entire future over one afternoon."

I pulled the printed itinerary from my pocket and slapped it next to the toy. "The sponsor dinner ends at ten-thirty. The drive takes two hours minimum."

"He can wait up," Ryan argued, running a hand through his styled hair. "We will cut the cake at midnight. It still counts as his birthday."

"He is turning seven, Ryan. Not twenty-one. He goes to sleep at eight."

"Then wake him up," Ryan snapped. "I am securing a six-point-six million dollar deal for this family. You can manage a bedtime."

The door swung open. Tessa strolled in, tossing two leather luggage tags onto the counter. The gold foil read His and Hers.

"Should we tease the future kids topic during the sunset cruise?" Tessa asked, flashing a bright smile at Ryan before cutting her eyes toward me. "The audience loves a vulnerable dad."

Ryan did not correct her. He did not tell her to leave. He looked at me, his expression hardening into pure business. "Just finish transferring the location notes to her team, Claire."

I picked up the dinosaur toy, my fingers gripping the cheap plastic. "I will send the files."

Back at the producer's desk, I placed the KPNW offer letter on my left. On my right sat the glossy Brooklyn real estate brochure Ryan gave me three years ago.

I flipped the brochure open to the blank signature page.

On my monitor, I pulled up a background file on KPNW's lead anchor, Daniel Reyes. An old interview clip played on the screen. The reporter asked about filming his family after a tragedy, pushing for an exclusive look at his home life.

"A child's grief is not content," Daniel said, staring dead into the lens, refusing to yield an inch.

I grabbed my pen and wrote that exact quote across the blank Brooklyn brochure, the black ink bleeding through the expensive paper.

My inbox chimed. Jonah's official email loaded.

72-hour window begins at 6:00 PM.

My phone buzzed immediately after. A text from Ryan popped onto the screen.

Sending the couple's wardrobe list for Montauk. Polish the banter script by five.

I ignored the text. I clicked the KPNW contract link, scrolling past the salary details and relocation terms. I typed my legal name into the signature box.

My cursor hovered over the green Accept button.

The digital timer at the top of the screen ticked down to 71:59:58.

Before I could click, the screen flashed black, Ryan's incoming call covering the button.
