After His Mistress Took My Daughter's Place

9.5 / 10.0
Seventy-two hours before her flight home, a mother's calls to her twenty-six-year-old daughter, Lacey, go unanswered. At first, she blames a busy schedule or wedding prep, leaving voicemails and texts. But unease grows when she contacts the estate directly, uncovering a devastating reality: a mistress has infiltrated Lacey's life, usurping her place entirely. This modern romance mystery follows a desperate mother's race against time through a web of deceit and forbidden desire to reclaim her daughter's identity before it's lost forever.

After His Mistress Took My Daughter's Place Chapter 1

Three days before I was supposed to fly home, Lacey stopped picking up.

I didn't panic right away. She was twenty-six. She had her own life, her own schedule. Maybe she was at the spa with Nora, or wrapped up in some wedding detail I'd already approved twice over. I left a voicemail. Then a text. Then another voicemail.

Nothing.

I called the estate directly. Margaret Holloway answered on the second ring.

"Miss Lacey had a minor fall," she said. "She is resting comfortably."

I stood at the floor-to-ceiling window of my London hotel suite and watched the Thames catch the grey morning light. "What kind of fall, Margaret?"

"A minor one, Mrs. Collins. She's resting comfortably."

The same words. The exact same cadence.

I called back on the kitchen line. A junior staffer answered. "Miss Lacey had a minor fall. She's resting comfortably."

I set the phone down on the marble desk. Outside, London hummed and glittered and didn't care. I looked at my reflection in the glass — blazer pressed, cufflinks straight, face giving nothing away — and I made a decision.

I walked out of the summit. Didn't finish my keynote. Didn't say goodbye to the minister I'd spent six weeks scheduling. I told my assistant to file a flight plan for the Hamptons and I didn't look back once.

---

The estate looked the same from the outside. That was the first thing that made my stomach drop — how perfectly unchanged it all was. The hedgerows trimmed. The gravel raked. The hydrangeas along the east wing still blue and full.

I didn't ring the bell. I used my key.

The foyer was quiet. Too quiet for a house with a full staff and a twenty-six-year-old woman in it. I followed the light to the east sitting room, and that's where I found her.

Lacey.

My daughter was in a wheelchair.

She was pale in a way that went past tired — a medicated pale, a hollowed-out pale. Her hands were folded in her lap too carefully, the way hands look when someone has been told to keep still. She was wearing a white cardigan I recognized, but it hung off one shoulder wrong, like she hadn't had the energy to fix it. Or hadn't noticed.

Her eyes found mine, and something moved through them — relief, maybe, or the ghost of it — and then it went flat again, smoothed over by something practiced.

"It was just an accident, Mom." Her voice was soft. Careful. "I'm fine."

I didn't say anything. I crossed the room and crouched down in front of her wheelchair and took both her hands in mine. They were cold. I held them anyway and looked at her face — really looked — and counted every single thing that was wrong.

I was going to burn the world down. But not yet. Not in front of her.

---

That night, while Lacey slept, Margaret Holloway came to find me in the study.

She was a woman in her sixties, silver-haired and precise, who had run this household for eleven years. She had never once brought me gossip. She had never once overstepped.

She closed the study door behind her. Then she laid it all out — quietly, methodically, like she'd been rehearsing it for weeks because she had been waiting for me to come home.

Donovan and Lylah. The affair, conducted openly once Lacey couldn't move between floors. Lylah sleeping in the master wing. Donovan's voice carrying through the walls at night. And then Margaret slid a folder across the desk toward me without a word.

I opened it.

A marriage certificate. Lacey's name. Jeffrey Larson — our chauffeur, fifty years old, a man I had employed for six years and apparently not known at all. A notary appointment already scheduled for Thursday.

I closed the folder. I pressed one hand flat against the desk. I breathed.

Then I straightened my cufflinks and walked down the hall.

---

I heard Donovan's voice before I reached the drawing room. Low, confident, running through a timeline with the ease of a man who believed he had already won.

I pushed the door open.

Lylah was on the settee in Lacey's cashmere robe — the dove-grey one I'd brought back from Milan two winters ago. The marriage documents were spread on the coffee table between them. Donovan was holding a pen.

He looked up. His expression moved through surprise and landed, almost immediately, on charm. "Alora. You're back early—"

I crossed the room.

I didn't shout. I didn't say a single word. I pulled back my hand and I slapped him — open palm, full force, clean across the face. The sound cracked through the room like something breaking.

Because something was.

He stumbled back. His hand flew to his cheek. Lylah made a small, shocked sound and went absolutely still.

I turned and walked to the hallway, where Jeffrey Larson was waiting near the door with his keys in his hand.

I looked at him. Just once.

"You're done," I said. My voice was quiet. Almost pleasant. "Every door this family ever opened for you is closed. Every contact, every reference, every network in this city — I will make sure they all know your name. You have one hour to clear your things."

He opened his mouth.

"One hour," I said, and I was already moving.

I went back to the east sitting room. I took the handles of Lacey's wheelchair myself. And I rolled her out of that room, away from all of it, while behind me I heard Donovan's voice — the first real crack in it — saying my name.

I didn't answer.

I was already done listening.
