Chapter 5

Ryan's incoming call covered the green Accept button on the KPNW portal.

I picked up.

"Four o'clock Saturday."

"Claire, listen—"

"No. If you are not in our living room by four, I sign the Seattle contract. Noah and I leave New York."

The line went quiet.

"You wouldn't take him across the country."

"I would take a job that lets me put my own name on my work and lets my son live without pretending his father is a stranger."

"I can't walk off a live promotional set."

"Then don't. But understand the cost."

Ryan exhaled hard. "I'll be there."

A screenshot arrived while we were still connected. He had canceled a private dinner reservation at the Montauk resort. The sponsored sunset shoot remained on the production schedule.

It was not enough, but it was the first thing he had canceled for Noah in months.

I ended the call, printed the KPNW offer, and locked it in my filing cabinet. Then I set an alarm for four-thirty Saturday.

"Did he say yes?" Noah asked from the doorway.

He held the paper crown he had thrown away the day before. One gold point was crushed.

I crouched beside him. "He said he plans to come."

I would not turn Ryan's intention into another promise.

"Bring me the glue stick."

We repaired the crown on the rug.

The next morning, WBN blasted the Montauk teaser across every monitor on the production floor.

"Catch New York's favorite on-air almost-couple on their first romantic getaway," the voice-over announced.

Ryan drove a red convertible while Tessa laughed beside him. He had not corrected the premise.

Tessa dropped a legal pad in front of my keyboard.

"I need 'if we had kids' rapid-fire questions in two hours. Funny. Diapers, baby names, who panics first."

I slid a stack of local tax-reform research toward her. "Here is today's actual news segment. I don't write fan fiction."

"You think you own him because you write his lines?"

"I think my job is journalism, not manufacturing a romance."

My desk phone rang before she could answer.

Vivian did not bother with hello. "Your next-quarter bonus is frozen."

"On what grounds?"

"Failure to cooperate with renewal promotion."

"Put the directive and the financial penalty in writing."

"Don't push me, Claire."

"Email it."

I hung up.

Ryan intercepted me in the narrow hallway behind audio.

"Play along for one weekend," he said. "After renewal, I demand executive control. I'll give you the hour."

"You cannot promise me a broadcast you do not own when you cannot even put your son's birthday in your calendar."

"You know why we're doing this."

"I know why you keep choosing it."

His phone was in his hand. For a second, I thought he might call Vivian and cancel. Instead, he locked the screen and walked toward makeup.

At lunch, the magician I had booked for Noah called to confirm the apartment number. I stepped into an empty edit bay so the studio noise would not drown him out.

"Small party?" he asked.

"Very small."

"Seven-year-olds are usually my toughest crowd."

I almost laughed. Noah had spent the week worrying about a television contract, public secrecy, and whether his father's job could survive the truth. A card trick was exactly the kind of problem he deserved to have for an afternoon.

I confirmed the fee, then opened the guest list. Two classmates, our downstairs neighbor, and the magician. No network people. No photographers. No one who would ask Noah to perform forgiveness for a camera.

When I picked him up from school, Noah asked whether I had bought extra candles in case Ryan arrived late.

"One set," I said. "The candles get lit once."

He nodded, accepting the rule more easily than his father ever accepted a boundary.

Friday night, Noah stood on a step stool in our kitchen squeezing white icing across a small chocolate cake.

Dad + Mom + Noah.

I piped a second sugar plaque with only the number 7 and set it aside.

Noah found the blue hospital card in my open wallet.

"Dad will never miss a birthday," he read. "Did he mean it?"

"He meant it when he wrote it."

"Does he mean it now?"

I took the card from him. "You do not have to wait for anybody to prove you're worth celebrating."

Noah studied the cake.

"If he's not here by four-thirty, we take his name off."

"Are you sure?"

He nodded. "I don't want to eat a promise that didn't happen."

The sentence was so painfully Noah that I had to look away for a second.

I packed our passports, Noah's birth certificate, school records, and the KPNW contract into a gray document envelope. I set it beside my keys.

Saturday morning, the Montauk pre-show filled our television.

Ryan and Tessa sat in the red convertible with the Atlantic behind them. Ryan tapped his watch for the camera.

"I won't miss any important moments today."

I took a photo of Noah at the table wearing both repaired crowns and texted it to Ryan with one line.

4:00.

The receipt changed to Read.

Noah pushed the cake onto the highest refrigerator shelf.

"If it stays cold, it lasts longer."

I knew the production schedule. Beach games at noon. Sponsor interviews at two. Sunset material beginning at six-thirty. A dinner block after eight.

At eleven, the field director announced the next stunt through a megaphone.

"Twelve-hour unplugged challenge!"

Tessa lifted a clear acrylic lockbox for the camera. "No distractions. Just us and the ocean."

She dropped in her phone and held out her hand to Ryan.

His device lit up as he pulled it from his jacket.

For one clean second, Noah's face filled the screen through the clear plastic. Two paper crowns. The kitchen table. My message beneath it.

4:00.

Ryan saw it.

He also saw the main camera waiting for his reaction.

His jaw tightened.

Then he gave the audience the smile that had made him famous, placed the phone in the box, and pushed down the heavy latch.

The lock snapped shut.
