Chapter 3

"I don't have a dad," Noah told Mrs. Avery, his pencil hovering over the empty box on the emergency contact sheet.

The second-grade teacher blinked, her gaze shifting from the paper to me. She waited for a correction.

I kept my hands folded on the small wooden desk. "Can we have a blank form?"

Elena opened her manila folder and pulled out a fresh sheet. She did not hand it over immediately. Instead, she slid a printed attendance log across the desk.

"I need to clarify the pickup protocol, Claire," Elena said, tapping a column of neat blue checkmarks. "Over the past eighteen months, Noah has logged eleven parental involvement days. Three school plays, two parent-teacher conferences, six weekend field trips."

"I attended all of them," I said.

"And every time, Noah told the parent volunteers his father had an early shift," Elena replied. "The school system only lists you as the authorized guardian. Mr. Bennett never completed the identity verification."

I looked at the blue ink. My lies, organized by date.

"If anyone else comes to collect him," Elena continued, "even someone Noah recognizes from television, I need your written consent first."

"Understood," I said.

Noah took the new form. He wrote my name in the primary contact line. He skipped the second section entirely, leaving the father's information blank. I took his pencil and signed my name at the bottom, making his choice permanent.

At eight in the morning, Vivian projected a massive screenshot of the production group chat onto the conference room wall.

"Your personal relationship is affecting show consistency," Vivian said, pointing a laser pointer at Tessa's message from last night.

I sat across from Vivian's mahogany desk. Tessa occupied the leather chair next to me, sipping a green smoothie.

"Which specific script error are we discussing?" I asked.

Vivian turned off the laser. "We are discussing whether you can remain emotionally stable through the contract renewal period."

I opened my laptop and turned the screen toward Vivian. "This is the script archive version history. My byline on the forty-seven-second charity intro was erased seventeen minutes before the broadcast. I wrote it."

Tessa set her smoothie down. "I used the text, yes. But all broadcast lines belong to WBN. It is show property."

"You registered it under your personal copyright account to monetize the social media clips," I corrected.

The glass door opened. Ryan walked in, carrying a stack of revised cue cards. He glanced at the laptop screen, then at Vivian.

"Claire wrote the initial draft," Ryan admitted, taking a seat beside Tessa. "But she is overly sensitive to the couple marketing lately. It blurs her judgment on what plays best for the audience."

Tessa smiled. Vivian nodded, satisfied with the anchor's assessment.

"You are off the couple travel special, Claire," Vivian ordered. "Hand over the location research and interview outlines to Tessa's team by noon. Uncredited."

"And if I refuse?"

"I will note insubordination in your exit references," Vivian said.

I closed my laptop. "I will transfer the files. But I want Ryan's statement about my emotional sensitivity documented in the official HR meeting notes."

Ryan shifted in his chair. "That isn't necessary."

"Put it in writing," I told Vivian, standing up.

I walked straight to the anchor dressing room. I slapped the school attendance log onto the illuminated vanity mirror.

Ryan followed me inside and shut the door. "Are you trying to get fired?"

"Three school plays," I said, pointing at the blue checkmarks. "Two conferences. Six weekend visits. Eleven times I told a room full of parents you were stuck at the anchor desk."

Ryan grabbed a makeup wipe and scrubbed at his jaw. "Morning anchors do not have normal schedules. You agreed to protect my career when we started this."

"I agreed to privacy," I shot back. "I did not agree to make a seven-year-old boy doubt he exists. He left your name off his school forms today."

Ryan threw the dirty wipe into the trash. "I am building a future for us. Why can't you see the bigger picture?"

"Saturday. Four o'clock," I demanded. "The cake waits thirty minutes. If you are not at my apartment by four-thirty, Noah blows out the candles alone."

Ryan pulled his phone from his pocket. He opened his calendar app and began typing.

The screen flashed with an incoming call. Tessa's name lit up the display.

Ryan immediately flipped the phone face down on the counter.

He reached out, his fingers wrapping tightly around my wrist. "I am doing this for our family, Claire."

I yanked my arm back. "You don't have a family right now."

I walked out, leaving the eleven records taped to his mirror.

At three in the afternoon, my inbox chimed. A travel itinerary loaded on the screen.

Destination: Montauk.

Departure: Saturday, 9 AM.

Return: Sunday, 8 PM.

The approval signature at the bottom did not belong to Vivian. Ryan had signed it himself.

I took a screenshot of the ticket confirmation and sent it to his private number.

My phone rang ten seconds later.

"You shouldn't still be in the project inbox," Ryan said, skipping any greeting.

"You have twenty-four hours left on my demands," I said, staring out the office window at the studio floor below. "If you get in that car to Montauk on Saturday, I will take your silence as your final choice."

"It is the last promotional trip before the network signs the renewal," Ryan argued, his voice dropping low. "I have to go. We will celebrate his birthday on Monday. I will buy him the bike he wanted."

"He doesn't want a bike. He wants his father."

"Be reasonable, Claire."

"Saturday. Four o'clock," I repeated.

I hung up the phone.

Behind me, the production office printer hummed to life. The rollers engaged, dragging a fresh sheet of paper through the ink cartridges. I turned around.

Noah stood in the doorway, his backpack slung over one shoulder, having just arrived from the school bus drop-off. He walked toward the printer tray and picked up the warm page I had accidentally routed to the public machine instead of my private desk.

His small eyes tracked across the bold black letters at the top of the itinerary.
