Chapter 2

"Whose little souvenir is that?" Tessa asked from the doorway.

I slid the blue hospital card back into the plastic sleeve behind my badge. "It belongs to a child your program excluded today."

She pulled out her phone and angled the front screen toward her face as if checking her makeup. The rear camera pointed at my hands.

I covered the lens with my palm.

"If you record identifying information about a minor without consent, WBN legal gets involved before you can post a single frame. Do you want to test that policy?"

Tessa lowered the phone. "Ryan's renewal includes a three-year on-screen couple clause. If an old family suddenly appears, the deal is dead."

Old family.

I typed the phrase into a note on my phone. I wanted the exact language saved while it was still ringing in my ears.

Ryan came through the doorway and looked at Tessa first.

"Did you record anything?"

Only after she shook her head did he turn to me.

"Did you get Noah out of the building?"

I unclipped my badge, moved the hospital card into my wallet, and put the wallet in the zipped pocket of my purse.

"He's with a production assistant downstairs," I said. "He wanted water before we leave."

Ryan exhaled as though the real emergency had passed.

An hour later, he followed me into the production office and shut the glass door. I had three old bank statements open on my monitor.

Forty-two thousand dollars in transfers.

"Image consultants. Pilot reel. Veneers," I said. "Every memo says our future."

Ryan braced both hands on my desk. "Why are you digging up money from two years ago?"

"Because I financed the version of you WBN is now paying millions to sell, and somehow I'm still treated like backstage help."

"My face gets viewers in the door."

I opened the network's award nomination page and scrolled through the list.

"Fourteen viral segments in two years. I pitched every one. I wrote every cold open. I rebuilt three after Standards rejected the first cuts. You read what I put in front of you."

For once, he had no quick answer.

Then he softened his voice and moved around the desk, switching from anchor to the Ryan I had loved before ratings entered every conversation.

"Once renewal is signed, we buy the brownstone. Noah gets my last name if you still want that. We stop hiding."

"When?"

"Soon."

His leather planner lay open beside my keyboard. Saturday's square was empty.

I turned it toward him. "His seventh birthday is Saturday. You haven't written it down."

Ryan looked at the page but did not reach for a pen.

I slid a printed sheet across the desk.

"Three terms. End the couple travel specials with Tessa. Be at my apartment Saturday at four. And within forty-eight hours, sit down with Vivian and legal to plan how you acknowledge Noah without putting his face on television."

Ryan folded the page twice and slipped it into his jacket.

"I heard you."

"That is not the same as agreeing."

He glanced toward the glass wall, checking whether anyone could see us. "If I walk into Vivian's office today and announce a seven-year-old son, she will say I concealed a material part of the brand strategy. Give me time to control the rollout."

"You had seven years to decide whether Noah was a problem to manage or a person to claim."

"That is unfair."

"What was unfair was making him ask permission to call you Dad after rehearsal."

Ryan's mouth tightened. For a moment, I expected an argument. Instead, he tapped the folded terms inside his pocket.

"Forty-eight hours," he said.

"The clock is already running."

He left without answering.

Before the glass door latched, a WBN copyright alert appeared on my screen. Tessa had registered a forty-seven-second charity broadcast intro as her personal original content.

I opened the script archive.

Six months earlier, seventeen minutes before air, my byline had been removed from that exact intro.

The production group chat pinged.

Tessa: Claire, please don't let personal jealousy damage the couple script. We all need to serve the audience.

She attached a screenshot of the red line I had drawn through the Family Day banter.

Vivian replied almost immediately.

Claire. My office. 8 AM tomorrow.

I captured the version history and sent it to Ryan.

Who approved the byline deletion?

His response came less than a minute later.

Don't escalate tonight. I'll handle it.

Then WBN's social page refreshed. Ryan had liked Tessa's Family Day selfie thirty seconds earlier.

I created a new folder on my desktop. Into it went original scripts, version histories, audio notes, engineering emails, and every file that showed exactly what I had built.

The old folder was called Ryan Assets.

I renamed it Claire Morgan Work Proof.

At seven, the kitchen smelled like burnt garlic bread because I had forgotten the timer while answering a standards email.

Noah sat at the dining table with a worksheet titled MY HERO. In dark pencil he had written, Dad wakes up America.

"Is he coming for dinner?" he asked.

"Not tonight."

Noah erased Dad until the paper thinned. Then he wrote Mr. Bennett in its place.

I sat beside him. "You don't have to keep a secret that hurts you. Not for me and not for him."

He stared at the pink eraser crumbs.

"If I tell people he's my dad, will he lose his job?"

Ryan had managed to make a seven-year-old feel responsible for a six-million-dollar contract.

I went to the refrigerator and pinned up a duplicate of my three terms. Across the top, I wrote 48 HOURS in red marker.

"Saturday is your birthday," I said. "We're lighting the candles at four-thirty. Whoever shows up gets to be there. Whoever doesn't, doesn't get a replacement day."

Noah looked at the paper for a long time.

Then he erased Mr. Bennett too.

The worksheet now held only a gray scar where a father's name should have been.

"Then tomorrow," he said, "I'll tell my teacher I don't have a dad."
