My Billionaire Fiancé Kissed His Mistress Fifteen Minutes Before Proposing to Me

Twelve years of devotion ended in a single betrayal: Graham Whitmore, my billionaire fiancé, kissed his younger assistant in our penthouse just fifteen minutes before kneeling with a ring. He dismissed her as no threat, yet she wore my pearls and claimed my place. I removed his ring and walked away without a backward glance. Then a kind doctor found me in the rain, showing me what love should truly feel like. Now my ex is on his knees, begging for a second chance I have no intention of granting.

Chapter 1

"Claire Bennett, will you marry me?"

Graham Whitmore was on one knee in the middle of his Manhattan penthouse. White roses covered every surface. A champagne tower glowed against the black glass, and Central Park lay beyond it like a dark sea.

Twelve years. I had waited twelve years for this.

"Yes," I whispered. Then louder, laughing. "Yes, you idiot. Yes."

He slid his grandmother's ring onto my finger. The old diamond caught the light and threw it back at me.

"I'm going to give you the biggest wedding this city has ever seen," he said, rising to kiss my forehead. "Everyone will be talking about it."

"I don't need everyone. I just need you."

He smiled the way he always did, one corner first. "You've got me, Claire."

His friends cheered. Someone popped another bottle. I counted the roses because I couldn't believe they were real. Ninety-nine.

Half an hour later, I went looking for him.

The study door stood open an inch. I heard Graham's voice, easy and lazy, and his college friend Marcus laughing.

"So the assistant. Sabrina, right? The twenty-two-year-old?"

"What about her?"

"Come on, man. Did you sleep with her?"

A pause. Ice clinked in a glass.

"Yeah," Graham said. "A few times."

The floor tilted under me. I pushed the door open.

Marcus went white. He mumbled something and slipped past me without meeting my eyes.

Graham didn't move. He sat on the edge of his desk and loosened his tie, slow, like he was getting comfortable.

"Say it again," I said. "Say it to my face."

"You heard me." He tugged the silk free. "So what do you want, Claire? Keep the wedding or break up. Your call."

My call. As if he'd offered me a choice between two restaurants.

"Do you love her?"

He actually laughed. Short, almost kind. "No. It's just new. We've been together forever. Don't you ever get bored?"

"Bored." The word tasted like metal. I pointed back toward the living room, toward the roses, toward the champagne still fizzing. "Then why this? Why get on your knee an hour ago?"

"Because marriage and excitement are two different things." He said it the way he explained zoning laws to investors. "You'll be Mrs. Whitmore. Sabrina's not a threat to that. She never will be."

"You think that's what I'm worried about? My position?"

"Isn't it?" He shrugged. "Look, if you want out, I'll take care of you. Apartment, money, whatever's fair. Name a number."

A number.

Twelve years, and he wanted to settle the account.

I looked down at the ring. My hand wasn't shaking. That surprised me most of all.

I walked to the champagne tower, pulled the ring off, and dropped it into the top glass. It sank through the bubbles and hit the bottom with a tiny clink.

"Keep your charity, Graham."

"Claire." He sighed like I was a toddler in a grocery store. "Don't do this tonight."

I grabbed my coat.

"And don't forget," he called after me, "dress fitting's at ten tomorrow. Vera's people hate when we're late."

I didn't answer. The elevator doors closed on his face.

Sixty floors. Somewhere around the fortieth, a memory hit me so hard I had to grab the rail.

Brooklyn. A foster house with no heat in January. Graham at seventeen, all elbows and anger, wrapping his thin jacket around both of us on the back steps.

"One day," he'd said into my hair, "I'm gonna give you a real home. Nobody'll ever kick you out again. I swear, Claire."

I'd believed him. I'd been nine years old the first time he promised to protect me, and I had never once stopped believing him.

The doors opened. I walked out into the rain and didn't stop until my legs gave out at the corner of Fifty-Ninth.

Then I cried. Loud, ugly, the kind that bends you in half. People stepped around me with their umbrellas.

My fingers found my phone. There was only one name I could call.

"Claire?" Nathaniel Brooks answered on the first ring. He was an ER doctor at Mount Sinai, and he'd known Graham and me since we were kids patching each other up in that same Brooklyn neighborhood. His voice was rough with sleep. "What's wrong?"

"I'm on Fifty-Ninth and Fifth." I tried to sound normal. It came out as a croak. "Can you come?"

"Don't move. I'm on my way."

He made it in forty minutes. I know because I watched every one of them pass on my phone screen while the rain soaked through my coat.

His car stopped hard at the curb. He was out before the engine died.

"Jesus, Claire." He took my hands. "Your fingers are purple. How long have you been standing here?"

"Since I called you."

He didn't ask about Graham. He didn't ask about the ring missing from my hand, though I saw his eyes catch on it. He just shrugged off his coat and settled it over my shoulders. It was warm and smelled like hospital soap and coffee.

"I should explain—"

"No." His voice was quiet but firm. "Tonight you don't owe anybody an explanation. Not me. Not anyone."

And that was when I laughed. Right there in the rain, mascara running down my face. Because twelve years with Graham, and the kindest thing anyone had said to me in months came from someone I'd almost forgotten to call.

Nathaniel didn't flinch. He just opened the car door.

"Get in. I've got the heater going."

I found out later what happened back in the penthouse while I was standing in the rain.

Graham's phone lit up with a selfie from Sabrina Cole. She was smiling into the camera, dark hair pinned up, and in her ears were my pearl earrings. The ones Graham gave me on our tenth anniversary. The ones I'd left on his nightstand that morning.

Is your fiancée gone? she'd written. So is it my turn tonight?

Graham never texted back.

But when she showed up at his door an hour later, he reached out and unhooked the pearls from her ears himself.

I woke up on Nathaniel's couch with a blanket I didn't remember pulling over me and a pounding behind my eyes.

My phone buzzed. An email from Danielle, our wedding planner.

Subject: Updated Timeline — Bennett/Whitmore Wedding

Hi Claire! Just confirming the changes per Mr. Whitmore's request. The wedding has been postponed until further notice. Sabrina has been wonderful taking over the details. She's already rebooked the venue walkthrough and swapped the florals from white roses to red. Let me know if you have any questions!

I read it twice.

Then I scrolled to the bottom, where Danielle had copied in a new contact for all future planning.

Sabrina Cole. Listed as "Household Coordinator, Whitmore Residence."

My home. My wedding. My name.

She was already wearing all of it.
