My Husband Planned My Hysterectomy for His Mistress Chapter 1
The phone rang at 2:47 a.m.
I knew because I was staring at the ceiling, counting the cracks in the plaster. Holden hadn't come home. Again. The bed beside me was cold and smooth, like no one had ever slept there at all.
I grabbed my phone off the nightstand. Unknown number. Seattle area code.
"Mrs. Sullivan?"
The voice was male, calm, professional. The kind of calm that meant something very bad had already happened.
"This is Lillie Spencer," I said. I never used Holden's name. Not really.
"This is Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. I'm calling about your parents, Ford and Rosalie Spencer. They were in a motor vehicle accident on I-5 approximately two hours ago. You're listed as next of kin."
The ceiling cracks blurred.
"How bad?"
"Your father is in critical condition. Your mother is in a coma. I can't give details over the phone. Can you come to the hospital?"
"I'm in New York. I'll be on the next flight."
I hung up. My hands didn't shake. I stood up, walked to the closet, pulled out jeans and a sweater. I moved like I was underwater. Everything felt slow and thick.
I tried calling Holden. It went straight to voicemail.
I tried again. Voicemail.
I texted: *Parents in accident. Flying to Seattle. Call me.*
I waited five minutes. Nothing.
I called our driver, packed a small bag, and left the apartment. The city was dark and empty. The streets looked like a movie set after everyone had gone home.
---
I landed in Seattle at noon. The sky was low and gray, pressing down on the buildings. I went straight to Harborview.
The ICU was on the fourth floor. The nurse at the desk checked my ID and pointed me down a long hallway. My father was in Room 407. My mother was in 409.
I went to my father first.
He was unconscious. Tubes everywhere. Machines beeping in rhythm. His face was pale and bruised, one eye swollen shut. I stood at the foot of the bed and tried to remember the last thing I'd said to him. Something about a board meeting. Something that didn't matter.
A doctor came in. Dr. Patel. She had kind eyes and tired hands.
"He's stable for now," she said. "But the next seventy-two hours are critical. We're monitoring for brain swelling."
I nodded.
"Your mother is down the hall. I can take you."
"I know where she is."
I walked to Room 409 alone.
My mother looked smaller than I remembered. The machines were quieter here. Just a soft hiss and beep. Her hair was brushed back from her face, and someone had tucked a blanket around her shoulders. She looked like she was sleeping. Like I could sit down and read to her and she'd wake up and smile.
But she didn't.
I pulled a chair close and took her hand. It was warm. That was something.
"I'm here, Mom," I whispered. "I'm right here."
I sat there for an hour. Maybe two. I lost track.
Then I heard a voice in the hallway.
Holden's voice.
I stood up slowly. Walked to the door. It was cracked open.
He was ten feet away, standing near a consultation room, phone pressed to his ear. His back was to me. He was wearing the suit I'd picked out for him last month. Navy blue. Italian wool.
"No, it's fine," he said into the phone. His tone was calm. Easy. "Her parents are out of commission. This is the perfect window."
I stopped breathing.
"The procedure's already scheduled," he continued. "Emergency hysterectomy if there's any complications from the accident. They won't question it. And once she can't have kids, your baby becomes the only heir. Clean and simple."
Silence. He was listening.
Then he laughed. Soft and low.
"I know, baby. I know. Just a few more weeks and we're free. I'll file the papers as soon as she's out of the hospital. She won't fight it. She never does."
My hand found the wall.
I didn't move. Didn't breathe. Didn't blink.
Holden said something else I didn't hear. Then he hung up, slipped the phone into his pocket, and walked toward the elevator.
He didn't look back.
I stood there in the hallway, my mother's room behind me, my father's room down the hall, and the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead.
Something inside me went very, very quiet.
