After My Alpha Crushed My Wards and Rejected Me
After My Alpha Crushed My Wards and Rejected Me Chapter 1
At precisely seven o’clock, I pushed open the double doors of the Silverfang great hall and smelled another woman on my promised Alpha's skin.
It was a synthetic, cloying vanilla, smeared so thick over Duncan's neck that it choked out his natural cedar scent. I froze on the threshold. My fingers tightened around the strap of my satchel, where my leather journal of pack-law statutes rested against my hip. Barnaby, my grey-and-white wolf-dog, let out a low rumble at my knee.
I had asked Duncan for a private meeting in his study to quietly dissolve our childhood arrangement. Instead, two hundred wolves sat at candlelit tables, staring at me in dead silence. A silk banner hung above the high table: *Welcome Home, Chloe.*
It wasn't a celebration. It was an ambush.
Duncan sat in the Alpha’s carved chair, his shoulders rigid. Leaning over his right shoulder was Angie, his supposed best friend. Her manicured hand rested openly against his collarbone, her eyes bright with malice.
"Chloe," Duncan said. His voice was flat. He didn't rise. "You're late."
"I asked for ten minutes in your office, Duncan," I said, keeping my voice level as I walked down the stone aisle. "Not an audience."
Angie smiled, tilting her head. "Don't be shy, Chloe. The pack wanted to see you. We wanted everyone to witness what you've been doing while Duncan was defending our borders."
Before I could reach the dais, Angie severed the hall's quiet.
She opened a corrupted pack mind-link, forcing a barrage of images directly into the minds of every wolf in the room. A collective gasp tore through the tables. In my head, I saw the manufactured filth: illusions of me pinned against trees by snarling rogues, forged memories laced with rogue musk and shredded clothing. It was dirty, clumsy work, but to a room of wolves primed by Angie’s rumors, it looked real.
Disgusted whispers broke out. Warriors shoved back their chairs. Duncan’s jaw clenched so hard the muscle leaped beneath his skin.
"You brought rogue filth to our borders," Duncan ground out, rising from his seat. "You disgraced my name."
"It's a chemical projection," I said coldly. I reached into my coat and pulled out my enchanted ward-stone. The smooth obsidian hummed faintly against my palm. "Angie brewed the scent compound herself. This stone recorded the residue from her quarters yesterday. Look at it."
I extended my hand.
Duncan didn't look. He descended the stairs in two furious strides, grabbed my wrist, and ripped the stone from my grip.
"You always have an excuse," he snarled. "You hide behind your little trinkets and pretend you're better than everyone else."
He closed his fist. With a sharp surge of Alpha strength, he crushed the obsidian into powder.
Black dust drifted through his fingers. A sickening hollow snap echoed through my bones.
He didn't know. The fool had no idea.
That stone wasn't just my evidence. It was the master anchor for the wolfsbane wards I had quietly wove around Silverfang’s perimeter for three years. In an instant, the invisible barrier guarding the pack collapsed. Miles away at the borders, ambient silver contamination began seeping into the soil, entirely unchecked.
Duncan wiped the dust on his jeans and glared down at me. "I am sick of your arrogance. And I am done letting you drag my name through the dirt."
He drew in a deep breath, his chest swelling before the gathered pack.
"I, Duncan, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Chloe Bennett, as my mate."
The words slammed into me like an iron blade.
A sheet of absolute ice tore across the right side of my neck where the mating mark had begun to form. The bond snapped, raw and jagged. It felt like a door slamming shut in an abandoned room, leaving nothing but freezing void. Inside my chest, my inner wolf howled once—a sound of sheer, tearing agony—and collapsed into the dark.
The biological shock dropped me instantly to one knee.
Pain radiated through my ribs. Duncan stood over me, his face impassive. Angie's layered scent acted like an anesthetic barrier over his senses; he didn't feel a fraction of the severing cost. Not yet.
"Bow your head," Duncan commanded, his voice dropping into the crushing weight of the Alpha tone. The aura hit the back of my neck like lead weights, demanding total submission. "Bow, Chloe. Apologize to Angie and the pack for what you've done, and I might let you stay in the outer barracks as an Omega."
My forehead hovered inches from the cold flagstones.
Then, deep in the dark where my wolf had collapsed, something stirred.
It didn't whimper. It didn't crawl. It surged upward on four massive, unfamiliar limbs. A low, thunderous snarl vibrated behind my ribs—a sound far too heavy, far too lethal to belong to a common wolf.
The weight of Duncan's Alpha tone shattered like cheap glass.
I planted my boot on the stone and stood up.
Duncan blinked, his eyes widening a fraction as I rose to my full height. My breath came fast, and my skin burned with cold fire, but my spine was straight. I pressed my thumb against the frozen, dead skin on my neck, locking the pain away behind a wall of pure iron.
"No," I said.
I didn't yell. I didn't cry. The single word cut through the hall, hard and final.
I tightened my hand on my bag, feeling the sharp outline of my journal. Inside were the exact Luna Accord statutes that gave a rejected mate the legal right to challenge an Alpha before the Lycan Council. He had stripped my wards and broken our bond, but he had just handed me the weapon to destroy him.
Without another word, I turned my back on Duncan.
Barnaby fell in beside me, his teeth bared in a silent sneer at the high table. Two hundred wolves watched in stunned silence as I walked down the center aisle, head high, boots clicking against the stone.
As I pushed through the exit doors into the night air, I glanced toward the shadow of the side corridor.
Angie was standing there, out of Duncan's sight. She caught the eye of two scarred enforcers waiting in the dark. She slid a box of silver matches from her sleeve, struck one against the striker, and blew out the flame with a smirk.
She mouthed one word to the men: *Warehouse.*
