Chapter 3

The ocean breeze suddenly felt like winter. Aurelio’s words hung in the salted air, amplified by the deafening silence of the crowd. He didn't blink. He didn't flinch. Instead, his right hand moved with practiced rhythm, adjusting the sapphire cufflink at his wrist.

"Security," Aurelio projected, his baritone voice carrying the polished, artificial cadence of a press conference. He turned slightly, ensuring his best profile faced the flashing lenses of the paparazzi clustered at the perimeter. "Please escort this delusional woman off the property. It’s unfortunate, but as a public figure, one occasionally has to deal with unhinged fans who blur the lines of reality. The safety and comfort of our guests are paramount today."

He was reading from a mental teleprompter. My husband of three years, the man whose empire I had coded into existence from a cramped Brooklyn apartment, was reducing my existence to a PR hazard.

Heavy footsteps crunched on the white gravel behind me. Two men with earpieces and broad shoulders closed in. My index finger began to tap a silent, rapid rhythm against the leather of my clutch. *Tap, tap, tap.* A countdown.

"Wait."

The command sliced through the tension, syrupy and sharp. Isabelle stepped around Aurelio, the voluminous layers of her custom silk gown rustling like dry leaves. The diamonds at her throat—a necklace I recognized from a recent company expense report—caught the afternoon sun, throwing fractured light across my face.

She raised a manicured hand, halting the guards inches from my shoulders. Then, she turned to me. Her lips curved upward, pulling into a slow, razor-wire smirk. She tilted her head back, her chin elevating so she could literally look down her nose at me.

"Let her stay for a moment, gentlemen," Isabelle cooed, though her eyes were flat and predatory. She pivoted gracefully toward the murmuring crowd, pressing a hand to her collarbone in a theatrical display of distress. "It’s tragic, really. Aurelio’s success is so blinding, it naturally attracts the desperate. Look at her."

Her gaze swept over my simple silk blouse and practical slacks, stripping me bare in front of Manhattan's elite.

"She clearly needs help," Isabelle continued, her voice dripping with weaponized pity. "Sneaking into a private estate, dressed like... that. It must be so difficult, living in a fantasy world where you think you belong among us. Aurelio, darling, you’re simply too generous with the public. It breaks my heart that you have to endure this harassment on our special day."

A ripple of sympathetic murmurs washed through the pavilion. They were eating it up. I stared at the woman who had spent the last two years fetching my coffee orders, now wearing the wealth I had generated, playing the victim.

The heat in my chest crystallized. The frantic, pleading daughter who had rushed from a hospice room was dying, leaving behind something much colder.

"Oh my God, Izzy, why are you even talking to the help?"

The sharp, shrill voice shattered the remaining decorum. Kaylee Ward stumbled out from the front row of white Chiavari chairs. A half-empty crystal flute of champagne sloshed dangerously in her grip, a few golden drops spilling onto the manicured lawn.

She reeked of alcohol and unearned arrogance. As she swayed to a stop beside her sister, she hoisted a limited-edition Birkin bag into the air, making absolutely certain the gold hardware faced the crowd.

"Seriously," Kaylee slurred, her cheeks flushed a blotchy red. She pointed a French-manicured finger directly at my face. "Do you have any idea what this costs? Aurelio dropped ten million dollars on my sister today. Ten. Million. The ice sculptures alone are worth more than your entire life, you pathetic beggar!"

She let out a harsh, mocking laugh that echoed terribly over the string quartet's abandoned instruments.

"Look at her standing there," Kaylee jeered to the audience, waving her designer bag so aggressively the leather slapped against her hip. "She probably rode the subway here! Thought she could crash a billionaire's wedding and get a handout. Get a grip, psycho! He doesn't want you. Nobody wants you!"

The crowd erupted into scattered, cruel laughter. Julian Montgomery, a tabloid journalist I recognized from the society pages, was openly recording the spectacle on his phone, his eyes alight with the promise of a viral scandal.

I stood perfectly still in the center of the crossfire. My wrists, hidden beneath the long sleeves of my blouse, throbbed with the phantom ache of old scars. I looked at Kaylee, sloppy and screaming. I looked at Isabelle, preening in stolen glory. Finally, I looked at Aurelio.

He stood slightly behind them, his jaw tight, his eyes fixed on the cameras, completely detached from the cruelty his silence was authorizing. He truly believed he was the untouchable king of this castle. He had forgotten who laid the bricks.

My finger stopped tapping against my clutch. The tug-of-war was over. I let go of the rope.

"Ten million dollars," I repeated. My voice didn't shake. It didn't need to be loud to cut through Kaylee's drunken giggles. "Fascinating."
