After My Husband’s $10M Wedding, I Burned His Empire Chapter 1

The hospice room smelled of antiseptic and dying dreams. I sat beside my mother's bed, watching her frail chest rise and fall with each labored breath. The only brightness in this sterile space came from the vase of fresh daisies I'd brought yesterday—a small attempt to bring life into her fading world.

Grace Hughes had once been strong enough to work double shifts to put me through college. Now, her fingers trembled as they clutched a faded photograph of me as a little girl, her smile radiant with pride. The cancer had ravaged her body, leaving behind hollow cheeks and skin like parchment paper, but her eyes still held that familiar warmth when they found mine.

"Vanessa," she whispered, her voice barely audible above the steady beep of the heart monitor. "I need to ask you something."

I leaned closer, taking her hand in mine. Her touch was impossibly light, like holding a bird that might fly away at any moment. "Anything, Mom."

She swallowed with visible effort, her gaze drifting to the window where Manhattan's skyline glittered beyond the glass. "Before I go, I just... I need to meet him. Your husband. Aurelio."

My throat tightened. For three years, I'd protected my mother from the truth—that my marriage was a secret, that the man I loved saw me as nothing more than a shadow in his life. She thought Aurelio was just a private man who traveled often. She didn't know he deliberately kept me hidden to preserve his image as Manhattan's most eligible bachelor.

"Mom, he's been so busy with the company," I said, the familiar lie tasting bitter on my tongue. "But I'll make sure he comes soon. I promise."

Her smile was gentle but tinged with sadness, as if she knew I was protecting her from something. "I just want to see the man who makes my brilliant daughter happy. Who's going to take care of you when I'm gone."

Tears burned behind my eyes, but I forced them back. Mom didn't need to see me cry. She needed hope.

I pressed a kiss to her forehead, careful not to disturb the IV line in her arm. "I love you, Mom. I'll be right back, okay?"

In the hallway, I pulled out my phone with shaking hands. The corridor was quiet except for the soft squeak of nurses' shoes on linoleum. I dialed Aurelio's private number—the one only I was supposed to have.

Voicemail. Again.

"Aurelio, it's me. Please, Mom's getting worse. She's asking for you. This is important. Call me back."

I sent text after text, each more desperate than the last. Where was he? His assistant hadn't blocked my calls in weeks. Something was wrong.

A young nurse approached, her expression sympathetic as she noticed my distress. "Are you okay, Mrs. Hughes? Oh, you're Vanessa Hughes, right? I saw you on that society blog last month. The one where they called you—" She stopped herself, flushing. "I'm sorry, that was insensitive."

I forced a smile. "It's fine. That's just... that's not my life."

She nodded, then hesitated. "You should probably see this. I'm sorry, but..." She held out her phone, open to a tabloid site.

The headline hit me like a physical blow: "Billionaire CEO Aurelio Davis Touches Down in Hamptons for $10 Million Dream Wedding."

There he was, my husband, stepping off his private jet into a sea of flashing cameras. He looked impeccable in a tailored suit, his smile confident and public—a smile I hadn't seen directed at me in months. Behind him, Isabelle Ward emerged, radiant in designer clothes, her arm possessively linked through his.

My vision went white at the edges. The nurse was saying something, but I couldn't hear her over the roaring in my ears. My fingers fumbled for my designer clutch, finding the neatly folded document I always carried—our marriage certificate. The legal proof that I was Mrs. Davis, not Isabelle Ward.

Three years of secrets. Three years of sacrifice. Three years of love and devotion, all for a man who was now publicly playing groom to another woman while my mother lay dying.

I straightened my spine, a cold clarity washing over me. "Thank you," I told the nurse, my voice steady despite the hurricane inside me. "I need to go. Now."

I had a wedding to crash.
