Chapter 4

The blinding glare of a portable ring light practically seared my retinas. Before the echo of my voice could fade into the crashing ocean waves, Julian Montgomery lunged into the space between the altar and the Chiavari chairs.

The notorious society blogger didn’t just have his phone out anymore; a hired cameraman trailed him like a shadow, a heavy lens aimed directly at my chest. Julian’s cologne—a suffocating mix of bergamot and desperation—rolled over me as he shoved a microphone toward my face.

"Julian Montgomery here, coming to you live from the wedding of the decade!" he practically shouted into his own lapel mic, his eyes wide with the predatory thrill of a fresh kill. "And what a spectacular twist, followers! It seems a deeply confused, uninvited guest has decided to crash Aurelio Davis's ten-million-dollar nuptials. Tell us, sweetheart," he sneered, thrusting the microphone so close it brushed my chin. "Are you one of those obsessive fangirls who writes letters in her own blood? Or did you just escape from a ward on the Upper East Side?"

A chorus of perfectly manicured laughter rippled through the pavilion. Women in silk organza leaned into their partners, whispering behind champagne flutes. The clicking of camera shutters sounded like a swarm of locusts descending on a dying crop. Julian circled me, the cameraman pivoting to capture every angle of my simple slacks against the backdrop of Isabelle’s cascading, six-figure train.

"Look at her, folks. Not a word! The delusion has finally short-circuited," Julian narrated to his millions of live viewers, his voice dripping with venomous glee. "Let's get a close-up of the outfit. Do we think this is off-the-rack or thrifted?"

The crowd jeered, a unified wall of elite cruelty. My mother was taking her final, agonizing breaths in a sterile room thirty miles away, and these people were treating my existence like a halftime show.

I didn't shrink under the blinding lights. I didn't raise my hands to shield my face. I simply let the coldness overtake the last warm, bleeding fragments of my broken heart. I turned my head, ignoring Julian entirely, and locked my gaze onto Aurelio.

My husband stood frozen, his posture rigid.

"Ten million dollars," I repeated, my voice dropping to a chillingly calm register. It wasn't a shout, but the absolute lack of inflection made it cut through the murmurs like a scalpel. I took one deliberate step past Julian’s microphone, closing the distance toward the altar.

Isabelle’s razor-wire smirk faltered slightly at my approach.

"You think you're marrying a king, Isabelle," I said, my eyes flicking to the glittering diamonds resting against her collarbone. "But you're wearing an empire built on the Apex-7 predictive routing models. The high-frequency algorithm that executed a phantom trade at exactly 3:14 AM last Tuesday to cover the margin calls on a Cayman shell company. The very code that paid for these imported cherry blossoms."

Aurelio’s breath hitched. It was a microscopic physical tell, but I had spent three years studying every line of his face. The blood drained from his cheeks, leaving his spray-tan looking sickly and hollow. His hand, which had been resting confidently on Isabelle's waist, suddenly dropped to his side. His fingers twitched, desperately seeking the sapphire cufflink.

"Security..." Aurelio choked out, the booming, PR-approved baritone completely gone. His voice cracked, high and thin with sudden, unadulterated panic. "Get her out. Now."

He recognized the numbers. He knew that only the architect of his false throne possessed that data.

Isabelle, oblivious to the catastrophic financial reality I had just laid bare, only saw a threat to her spotlight. The fact that I hadn't fled in tears, that I was standing my ground while her billionaire groom broke into a cold sweat, ignited a vicious flush across her neck and chest.

"You psychotic bitch," Isabelle hissed, dropping the theatrical victim act. Her manicured hands balled into tight fists, the heavy silk of her gown bunching at her sides. "You think you can come here, spout some stolen corporate jargon, and ruin my day? You think you can humiliate me?"

She didn't wait for my answer. Isabelle spun around, her heels digging fiercely into the white marble platform, and locked eyes with the technicians in the elevated AV booth at the back of the pavilion.

"Play it!" Isabelle shrieked, her voice echoing violently across the estate. "Play the surprise presentation! Let's show Manhattan exactly what kind of trash is standing in front of them!"

Aurelio snapped his head toward his bride, his eyes widening in confusion. "Izzy, what presentation? What are you doing?"

"Taking out the garbage, darling," she spat, her eyes alight with malicious triumph.

Above the altar, the massive, thirty-foot LED screens—originally intended to display a romantic montage of their fabricated love story—flickered off. The string quartet's ambient music was abruptly cut, replaced by the sharp, terrifying crackle of static over the venue's surround-sound speakers.

The screens flared to life, casting a harsh, sickly blue light over the frozen crowd. And as the first distorted frame of the video materialized, the phantom ache in my scarred wrists flared into a burning, agonizing reality.
