Chapter 2

My phone started ringing at 6 AM the morning after I left. Spencer's name flashed across the screen like an alarm I couldn't silence. I let it go to voicemail. Again. And again. By the third call, I turned the phone face-down on the hotel nightstand and went to the shower, letting the sound of running water drown out his persistence.

I was staying at the Archer on 38th Street—a boutique hotel I'd chosen because it was neither too expensive nor too cheap, too trendy nor too anonymous. A place where I could disappear into the crowd of business travelers and tourists without standing out. I'd paid for three nights with my personal credit card, the one Spencer didn't monitor.

When I came out of the shower, there were seven missed calls and two voicemails. I listened to the first one while toweling my hair dry.

"Stella, this is ridiculous. Call me back. We need to talk about this." His voice was controlled, measured. The voice he used with difficult clients.

The second was different. His tone had shifted. "I know you're upset, but you're being dramatic. Whatever you think you saw—it's not what you're making it out to be. Come home and we'll figure this out like adults."

I deleted both messages and blocked his number.

That afternoon, I met Diana Reeves at her office in a sleek high-rise near Bryant Park. She was a woman in her fifties with a silver bob and the kind of direct gaze that made you feel seen and slightly exposed at the same time. Her office walls were lined with law degrees and framed news articles about her previous cases—a silent testament to her reputation.

"I need this to be clean," I told her, sliding the folder of evidence across her glass desk. "No dragging it out. No negotiations. Just... done."

Diana flipped through the photos, the messages, the timeline I'd compiled. She didn't look shocked or judgmental. She looked focused.

"You've done good work," she said finally. "Most people in your situation don't have this kind of documentation. Makes my job easier. I'll file everything today and push for an expedited process. Given the... nature of the evidence, I don't think he'll fight too hard. Men like your husband usually don't."

I nodded, feeling a strange hollowness in my chest. "He hasn't mentioned the divorce papers. Not once. Just keeps telling me I'm being dramatic."

"He's not processing it yet," Diana said, her voice matter-of-fact. "Men like that never process the consequences until they're staring them in the face. But we'll make sure they're staring him in the face very soon."

I left her office with a strange lightness, as though I'd set down a weight I hadn't realized I'd been carrying.

That evening, I turned on my phone to find three texts from college friends asking if I'd heard that Tiffany was back from London. Apparently, she'd posted on Instagram from JFK Airport that morning.

I stared at the notification, a cold feeling settling in my stomach. Of course she'd come back now. Now that Spencer was successful, celebrated, worth having again.

The next few days blurred together in a haze of legal paperwork and strategic silence. I changed hotels, moving to the William Vale in Williamsburg, putting more distance between myself and Spencer's social circle. But I couldn't escape the news that Tiffany was making her triumphant return to Manhattan society.

She appeared at the Architectural Digest gala on Spencer's arm, wearing a red dress that made her look like she was bleeding into the camera flashes. She posted photos from the Guggenheim opening, her hand casually draped over Spencer's shoulder. She was building a narrative, brick by brick, and I was watching it happen from the sidelines.

Then came the invitation.

It was a rooftop party in Tribeca, hosted by Marcus Webb—a senior architect at Spencer's firm and one of our mutual friends. The email was addressed to both Spencer and me, as though we were still a unit, still the power couple everyone thought we were.

I almost didn't go.

But something in me—some stubborn, wounded part that needed to see it with my own eyes—made me book a car and put on a black dress I'd bought for a different life.

The rooftop was strung with fairy lights and filled with the kind of people who talked about their projects as though they were saving the world. I spotted three of my own clients in the crowd, their faces shifting from surprise to awkward recognition when they saw me.

And then I saw them.

Tiffany in a white dress that caught the golden hour light, her arm linked through Spencer's as they moved through the crowd like royalty. She was laughing at something he'd said, her head tilted back, her hand resting on his chest in a gesture of intimate familiarity.

I stood frozen at the edge of the terrace, watching the performance unfold. Because that's what it was—a performance. Every touch, every glance, every perfectly framed moment was calculated for an audience.

And I was just another spectator now.
