I called Spencer's mother on a Wednesday morning.

I don't know what I expected. Something real, maybe. Some acknowledgment from the woman who used to call me at 11 PM during Spencer's recovery just to hear my voice, just to be reassured that her son was still breathing, still fighting. The woman who once pressed my hand between both of hers and said, *you are the daughter I always wanted, Stella. I mean that.*

She picked up on the second ring.

"Stella." Her voice was warm. Carefully warm. The kind of warm that has been prepared in advance.

"I wanted to talk to you," I said. "About what's happening. About Spencer and—"

"Of course." A small pause. "I think these things are always so difficult. For everyone involved."

I waited.

"People grow apart," she said. "It happens. It doesn't mean anyone is to blame."

*Grew apart.* Five years. A car accident. Two years of physical therapy. A burn scar on my left arm. We *grew apart.*

"He's been seeing Tiffany," I said. "For over a year."

"Tiffany has such lovely energy." Her voice didn't change at all. Smooth and even, like a surface that had been sanded down. "She's always been so vibrant. I can see why Spencer—" She stopped. Recalibrated. "I just think that sometimes people find what they need at different times in their lives."

What they need.

I looked at the gold cuff on my left wrist. The scar underneath it.

"I see," I said.

"You'll land on your feet, Stella. You always do. You're very capable."

Capable. That was the word she chose. Not *loved*. Not *wronged*. Not *deserving of better*. Capable. Like I was a reliable appliance being returned after years of faithful service.

"Thank you," I said. "For being honest."

I hung up. I went to my contacts and deleted her number. I didn't feel angry. I felt something quieter and more final than anger—the particular clarity that comes when the last thing you were still hoping for simply stops being possible.

I didn't call again.

The finalist list for the National Design Awards went up on a Friday afternoon.

I was at my temporary workspace in Williamsburg, a rented desk at a shared studio, when my phone buzzed with the notification. I opened the link out of habit. I'd submitted a project brief six months ago, before everything collapsed, and I'd half-forgotten about it.

My name wasn't on the list.

Tiffany Carlson's was.

I read it twice. Then I clicked through to the published excerpt of her submission.

The first page stopped my breath.

I knew that project. I knew it because I had built it from nothing—a gut renovation of a brownstone in Carroll Gardens, every decision documented in my own handwriting across four notebooks. I knew the specific shade of warm white I'd specified for the plaster walls. I knew the Brooklyn fabric supplier I'd sourced the linen from—a small family operation on Atlantic Avenue that worked exclusively with me, by a handshake agreement we'd had for three years.

I scrolled further. My mood boards. My technical specifications. My supplier correspondence, reformatted with Tiffany's name in the header. My design philosophy statement—the one I'd written at 5 AM on a Tuesday, the one that had taken me two weeks to get right—reproduced word for word under her byline.

She had taken everything.

Not borrowed. Not referenced. *Everything.* Every file, every concept, every carefully sourced detail from years of work I had built in the margins of a life I was also giving to someone else.

She'd had access for years. My home office. My laptop when she came over for dinner. The shared cloud folder I'd given her the password to when she claimed she needed to send me a reference document.

I sat very still at my desk. Around me, other designers worked and talked and laughed. The city moved outside the windows.

I opened my laptop and pulled up my original project files. The timestamps were clear. My first draft of the Carroll Gardens concept predated Tiffany's submission by seven months. The supplier emails went back further. The metadata was a clean, unbroken chain of authorship.

I called Diana.

"I need you to look at something," I said when she picked up.

I sent her everything within the hour. She called back in twenty minutes.

"This is airtight," she said. "Timestamps, metadata, exclusive supplier relationship—she didn't even bother to change the file names on two of the mood boards." A pause. "She's either very arrogant or very stupid."

"Both," I said.

"The awards ceremony is in eleven days," Diana said. "I want you there. I want you to walk in with a physical copy of this documentation. We make it public before we file—create an undeniable record in front of the entire industry. Make it impossible to bury."

I looked at the finalist list still open on my screen. Tiffany Carlson. My work. Her name.

"I'll be there," I said.
