9.3 / 10.0

He doesn't know I still own fourteen percent of a powerful sports investment group. I'm done fighting for a place in his family. I'll cut him off from mine—and when his empire falls, the wife he replaced becomes the one woman he can't afford to lose.

My NHL Husband and Son Chose His Female Agent Over Me Chapter 1

Oliver had left his backup neck guard on the passenger seat again.

I found it under a pile of his game-day snack wrappers, grabbed the blue sports drink from the cooler, and tucked the training log I'd updated last night under my arm. Three pages, color-coded. His skating splits, his shot speeds, the note from his coach about keeping his stick lower on the backhand.

Seven years of youth hockey, and I'd missed maybe four games. My bag always had spare laces, Band-Aids, and the chocolate energy bars he pretended he'd outgrown.

The Boston Blades ran their youth program out of the same practice facility as the pro team, so family members used the digital passes the organization issued to players' households. My husband, Kaiden Hayes, was their starting center. The pass had never failed me.

I held my phone to the scanner at the entrance.

The screen flashed red.

ACCESS REVOKED.

"Sorry, let me try that again." I tapped it a second time. Red.

The staff member behind the desk, a young guy with a lanyard full of pins, took my phone and typed something into his computer. His face changed. He glanced at me, then back at the monitor.

"Mrs. Hayes," he said quietly, "Mr. Hayes personally requested the change. Three weeks ago."

"What change?"

He turned the monitor slightly toward me. Under Primary Family Access Guest, one name glowed in clean white letters.

BLAIR SUTTON.

I looked up.

Through the glass, I could see the stands. Third row, center ice, right behind the bench. My seat. The one where I'd frozen through a hundred early-morning practices.

Blair was sitting in it.

Kaiden's agent wore a cream wool coat and her dark hair pinned up neatly, and in her hands was the blue insulated tumbler I'd texted Kaiden about yesterday. *Don't forget Ollie's water bottle. The blue one. He likes it cold.*

Oliver skated to the boards, pulled off his helmet, and waved.

Not toward the entrance. At her.

She waved back with my son's water bottle.

I didn't go in. I took out my phone and photographed the red screen.

---

I caught Kaiden in the corridor after the final buzzer, outside the locker rooms. He was in his team quarter-zip, still talking to someone on his earpiece. He saw me and ended the call.

"Claire. Didn't know you were coming."

I didn't ask why Blair was there. I held out my phone with the revoked pass.

He glanced at it for maybe two seconds. "Blair handles a lot of the family events for me. Media days, sponsor stuff. It's easier if she has access."

"Easier," I said. "Then why did you need to cancel mine?"

"It's a system thing. There's a limit on primary slots."

"There's a limit of four. We use two."

His jaw tightened. Before he could answer, Blair stepped up beside him with a glossy box.

"Ollie! Got something for you."

Oliver came out of the locker room with his hair still wet and his bag dragging. He saw the box and lit up. She handed him a pair of custom hockey gloves, black and gold, his number stitched on the cuffs. I knew that brand. Over a thousand dollars, easily.

"Mom, look." He shoved them at me, grinning. "Blair got them made for me. They're the same ones the pros use."

"They're beautiful," I said.

"And Blair's coming to the school tournament next week." He pulled one on and flexed his fingers. "She actually understands hockey."

He said it like it was nothing. Like the weather.

Three months ago, he'd told me to stop helping him tie his skates. Two months ago, he'd asked me to quit filming his games because it was embarrassing. Last month, he'd given my seat ticket to Blair because she could post his highlights on social media.

Blair already had her phone out, scrolling through tonight's game footage. Clean angles. Slow motion on his goal. She'd been filming from my seat.

I'd been treating each of those moments like a small thing. A phase. Normal thirteen-year-old stuff.

They weren't small. They were a line, and somebody had been drawing it.

"Ollie, go wait in the car," Kaiden said. "Blair, walk him out?"

"Of course."

When they were gone, Kaiden looked at me the way he looked at refs who'd made a bad call.

"Blair understands this world better than you do," he said. "Stop making everything personal."

"My son's water bottle is personal, Kaiden."

He didn't answer.

---

I went back to the front desk. The same young staffer straightened when he saw me.

"My account was the primary household account until three weeks ago," I said. "I'm entitled to see the change history. I'd like the request emails, please."

He hesitated, then nodded and pulled them up.

There were two.

The first was the access request, submitted from Kaiden's verified email. It didn't just add Blair. It changed my status from Primary Family Contact to Secondary Guest. And then, once the system flagged that a secondary guest couldn't hold a pass on game nights, it had simply revoked me.

The second was a team media authorization form. Kaiden's electronic signature sat at the bottom, dated the same night. It named Blair Sutton as Oliver's on-site guardian contact for all player family events.

Guardian contact. For my son.

This wasn't a clerical error. It wasn't a temporary arrangement, and it wasn't Blair overstepping on her own.

My husband had done this himself, line by line, and signed his name.

I looked at the date. October ninth.

That was the night Kaiden had told me he'd be in a business meeting until two in the morning. Sponsor negotiations, he'd said. Don't wait up.

At midnight, Blair had posted a photo of two champagne flutes on a hotel bar. I'd scrolled past it in bed. In the corner of the frame, resting on the counter, was a wrist with a silver watch. The one I'd given Kaiden for our tenth anniversary, engraved on the back.

I hadn't thought anything of it then.

Those weren't separate lies. They were one plan.

Kaiden appeared at the end of the hallway, keys in his hand. He saw the monitor and stopped.

"You pulled the logs?"

"I did." I turned the screen toward him. "You made her his guardian contact."

"For events. It's paperwork, Claire."

"Why would your agent need my place in our family?"

He didn't flinch. He didn't even pretend.

"Because she's useful there," he said.

The staffer suddenly found something very interesting on his keyboard.

---

I didn't argue. There was nothing left to argue with.

"Can you forward these to me?" I asked the staffer. He did. I forwarded them again to my private email, the one Kaiden didn't know existed, and walked out without looking back at my husband.

In the parking garage, I sat in my car with the engine off. Oliver's neck guard was still on the passenger seat. I'd never given it to him.

I opened my contacts and scrolled down to a name I hadn't touched in eight years. Rebecca Shaw, family law. Her business card was still tucked behind my driver's license, soft at the corners.

I typed slowly.

*I need a consultation about separation, financial access, and custody.*

I hit send before I could rewrite it.

Then I opened my banking app, went into authorized users, and removed Kaiden from my personal account. The app asked if I was sure. I was.

At home, the house was dark. Kaiden had taken Oliver for a team dinner. Blair would be there. I didn't need to check.

I went into the walk-in closet and knelt by the bottom shelf, behind the winter boots and the boxes of baby clothes I'd never been able to throw out. In a velvet pouch was a small black security token, heavier than it looked. One silver word on the front.

NORTHLINE.

I plugged it into my laptop. A login screen appeared, asking me to reactivate my identity.

My fingers remembered the old password before my brain did.

The screen went still for a second. Then it brightened.

CLAIRE BENNETT

SHAREHOLDER ACCESS RESTORED

Not Claire Hayes. Not Mrs. Hayes. Just me.

For eight years, I'd gone to bed every night planning someone else's tomorrow. Practice schedules. Kaiden's flights. Oliver's protein intake. Whose laundry, whose physical therapy, whose birthday.

Tonight, for the first time, I was planning my own exit.

I looked at the glowing account and said it out loud to the empty room.

"If I'm only a guest in my own family, I won't stay long enough to be removed again."
