Chapter 2

The photo appeared on my feed at 2:47 PM on a Thursday.

I was at a red light on Madison Avenue. My phone was in the cupholder. It lit up with a notification from a college acquaintance I hadn't spoken to in four years — the kind of person who only reaches out when there's something worth watching burn.

The caption read: *When your mentor gets you* ✨

Brittany Cox and Carter, side by side at a corner table at Nobu. The lighting was golden and intimate. Her hand rested near his on the table, not quite touching, close enough to suggest. She was laughing at something he'd said, her head tilted back just slightly, and Carter was looking at her the way you look at someone when you think no one else is watching.

Except someone was. Someone always is.

I stared at it until the car behind me honked. The light had turned green. I didn't remember it changing.

By the time I pulled into our building's garage, there were two more photos. A bookstore in SoHo. A gallery opening in Chelsea. In each one, they stood just close enough. Just ambiguous enough. The comments underneath were a careful ballet of plausible deniability. *Love this energy.* *Mentor goals.* *The way he looks at her though.*

I took the elevator up. My hands were steady. I was proud of that.

Carter was in his study, on a call. I waited in the doorway until he glanced up and held up one finger. Five more minutes. I nodded and walked to the living room. I sat on the sofa. I did not look at my phone again. I placed it face-down on the cushion beside me and looked at my hands instead.

They were still steady.

When Carter came out, he was already smiling. The warm, easy smile he used when he wanted to disarm me before I'd even begun.

"Long day?" he asked.

I picked up my phone. I turned it toward him without a word.

He looked at the screen. He looked at me. His expression didn't change.

"Isla."

"Who is she?"

"A graduate student. NYU. I've been mentoring her for a few months." He said it the way you'd say *I had lunch* or *I took a meeting.* Factual. Unremarkable. "She's brilliant. She's going places."

"You didn't mention her."

"I didn't think I needed to." He crossed the room and sat beside me, close enough that our knees touched. He took the phone from my hand and set it on the coffee table. "This is what you're upset about? Lunch?"

"It's not just lunch. It's—" I gestured at the phone. "It's how it looks."

"How it looks," he repeated slowly. He leaned back. "Isla, do you hear yourself?"

I felt something tighten in my chest.

"I'm not imagining this, Carter. Everyone is—"

"Everyone is *what*?" His voice was still calm. That was worse somehow. "Talking? Let them. I married you when your own family wouldn't stand in the same room with you. I stood at that altar in front of four hundred people and made you my wife. And this—" He picked up my phone, glanced at the screen, set it back down. "This is how you repay that? With jealousy?"

The word landed like a slap.

"I'm not jealous," I said quietly. "I'm asking you to—"

"To what? To stop mentoring a talented young woman because you're insecure?" He shook his head. "I expected better from you."

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.

He stood. He kissed the top of my head, his hand resting briefly on my shoulder. "I have calls to return," he said. "We'll talk later when you've calmed down."

He walked back to his study. The door closed with a soft click.

I sat there for a long time. I looked at my phone. I looked at my hands.

They were shaking now.

---

The dinner invitation arrived on cream cardstock, hand-delivered by a driver in a black town car. Genevieve Stone's personal stationery. *Family dinner. Saturday. 7 PM. The Hamptons.*

Carter accepted without asking me.

We drove out in silence. I watched the city give way to trees and then to the long, manicured lawns of estates that had names instead of addresses. The Stone house sat at the end of a private road, all white columns and old money and the kind of quiet that felt like judgment.

Genevieve met us at the door. She was wearing ivory silk and pearls, her hair swept into a flawless chignon. She kissed Carter on both cheeks. She offered me her hand.

"Isla," she said warmly. "So glad you could join us."

Dinner was served in the formal dining room. Eight courses. Genevieve sat at the head of the table, Carter to her right, me to her left. The conversation moved smoothly through safe topics — the weather, the upcoming benefit season, a new acquisition at the Met.

Then, between the fish and the palate cleanser, Genevieve turned to me.

"Isla, darling," she said, her voice light and pleasant, "I've been meaning to ask. Have you given any thought to what you bring to this family? Beyond Carter's affection, I mean."

She smiled. It was a small smile. Composed. Kind, even.

I set down my fork carefully.

"I—I'm not sure I understand."

"Oh, it's not a criticism." She reached over and patted my hand. "I'm simply curious. The Stones have always been very intentional about legacy. Contributions. I'm sure you have thoughts."

Carter said nothing. He was cutting his fish into precise, even pieces.

I looked at Genevieve. I looked at Carter. I looked at my plate.

"I'll think about it," I said quietly.

"Wonderful." Genevieve lifted her wine glass. "I'm sure you will."

The rest of the dinner passed in a blur. I smiled when I was supposed to smile. I nodded when I was supposed to nod. I touched the inside of my left wrist beneath the table and pressed down hard enough to feel my pulse.

On the drive back, Carter reached over and squeezed my knee.

"She likes you," he said. "She's just old-fashioned."

I nodded.

I didn't trust my voice.

Brittany was at my yoga studio on Tuesday morning.

I saw her the moment I walked in. She was setting up her mat in the back row, directly behind where I always stood. She glanced up, caught my eye, and smiled.

"Isla, right?" she said brightly. "I've seen your photos. It's so nice to finally meet you in person."

I stared at her.

"I'm Brittany," she continued. "Carter's mentioned you, of course. He speaks so highly of you."

She rolled out her mat. She adjusted her water bottle. She looked at me expectantly, as if waiting for me to say something gracious.

I turned around. I set up my mat. I focused on my breathing.

But I felt her there. Behind me. Watching.

After class, she was gone.

I stood in the lobby for a long time, staring at the place where her mat had been, trying to convince myself it was a coincidence.

I almost believed it.
