Chapter 3

I missed my period in October. Then November. Then December.

I didn't tell Carter right away. I kept thinking it would come. That I was stressed, or my body was adjusting, or any of the hundred reasons the internet offered when I searched at two in the morning with my phone brightness turned down low.

By January, I couldn't pretend anymore.

I found him in his study on a Tuesday evening. He was reviewing contracts, his reading glasses perched on his nose in that way that made him look professorial and kind. I stood in the doorway until he looked up.

"Can I talk to you?"

He set down his pen immediately. "Of course. Come here."

I sat in the chair across from his desk. I twisted my wedding band around my finger.

"I haven't had my period in three months."

His expression shifted into something gentle. Concerned. He came around the desk and crouched beside my chair, taking my hands in his.

"Have you taken a test?"

"Five of them. All negative."

"Okay." He squeezed my fingers. "That's okay. These things take time, Isla. You're putting too much pressure on yourself."

"But three months—"

"Stress can do that. You know that." He brushed a strand of hair behind my ear. "We'll make an appointment with a specialist if it'll make you feel better. But don't spiral over this. It'll happen when it's meant to happen."

I nodded. My throat felt tight.

He kissed my forehead and went back to his desk. That evening, I watched him refill the rose-gold pill organizer at my vanity. Sunday ritual. He pressed each tablet into its compartment with careful precision, his expression focused and tender.

I stood in the doorway and felt something warm and aching in my chest.

Grateful. I felt grateful.

---

The call came on a Wednesday morning.

Carter's voice was clipped. Professional. The tone he used when he'd already made a decision and was simply informing me of it.

"There's a luncheon at the Met on Friday. The winter benefit committee. You're coming with me."

"I wasn't planning—"

"Brittany will be there." A pause. "You're going to apologize to her."

I gripped the phone tighter. "For what?"

"For your behavior. The hostility. It's embarrassing, Isla. People are noticing."

"I haven't done anything to her."

"You've made her uncomfortable. You've been cold. And frankly, it reflects poorly on me." His voice was calm. Reasonable. "This is a simple ask. You apologize. You're gracious. We move on."

I closed my eyes. "No."

Silence.

"What did you say?"

"I said no." My voice was shaking but the words were clear. "I'm not apologizing to her. I didn't do anything wrong."

The quality of the silence changed. It became heavier. Sharper.

When Carter spoke again, his voice was very quiet. That was worse than shouting. That was the voice that made my stomach drop.

"Where exactly do you think you'll go, Isla?"

I didn't answer.

"Your family won't take you back. You have no money of your own. No career. No friends who aren't mine first." A pause. "I am the only thing standing between you and nothing. Do you understand that?"

I pressed my palm against the kitchen counter. The marble was cold.

"Friday. One PM. Wear the blue Armani." He hung up.

I stood there for a long time. I looked at my hand on the counter. I watched my fingers curl slowly into a fist.

Then I went upstairs and pulled the blue Armani from my closet.

---

The Met's rooftop garden was filled with white tables and women in pastel silk. I saw Brittany immediately. She was holding court near the balustrade, laughing at something an older woman had said, her hand resting lightly on the woman's arm.

Carter guided me toward her with a hand on my lower back. Firm. Unyielding.

"Brittany," he said warmly. "You remember Isla."

Brittany turned. Her smile was radiant. "Of course. Isla, you look beautiful."

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.

Carter's hand pressed harder against my spine.

"Isla has something she'd like to say to you," he said.

Brittany tilted her head. Waiting.

I felt the eyes of a dozen women on me. I felt Carter's hand. I felt the weight of three years pressing down on my shoulders like something physical.

"I—"

My purse slipped.

I don't know how it happened. One moment it was on my shoulder. The next it was falling, and I was reaching for it, and the clasp came open and everything inside scattered across the marble floor.

Lipstick. Compact. Tissues. Keys.

And the rose-gold pill organizer, tumbling end over end until it hit the ground and sprang open, white tablets skittering in every direction.

I dropped to my knees. My face was burning. I started gathering them up, my hands shaking, and then someone else was crouching beside me.

A man. Silver hair. Kind eyes. He picked up one of the tablets and looked at it. Then he looked at me.

"Excuse me," he said quietly. "I'm Dr. Marcus Webb. May I ask—are these yours?"

I nodded. I couldn't speak.

He glanced at the pill organizer in my hand. At the scattered tablets. His expression shifted into something I couldn't read.

"These aren't vitamins," he said.

I stared at him.

"These are oral contraceptives. Combination estrogen-progestin. Standard dosage." He spoke gently, as if explaining something to a child. "How long have you been taking these?"

The rooftop tilted.

"I—I don't—" My voice came out wrong. Thin and far away. "They're vitamins. Prenatal vitamins. My husband—"

Dr. Webb's face changed. He looked past me, toward where Carter stood, and then back at me.

"I think you should come with me," he said quietly. "Right now."

I looked down at the pill in my hand. Small. White. Unremarkable.

Three years.

Three years of hoping. Of grieving every negative test. Of believing my body was failing me.

Three years of watching Carter refill this organizer every Sunday morning with tender, focused care.

I started laughing.

It came out of me in a sound I didn't recognize. High and sharp and broken. Dr. Webb's hand was on my arm. Someone else was asking if I was all right. I could hear Carter's voice somewhere above me, smooth and concerned, saying something about stress, about my health, about how he'd been worried.

I looked up at him.

He was looking down at me with perfect, practiced sympathy.

And I knew.

I had always known.

I just hadn't let myself see it.
