Chapter 4

The training session was supposed to be routine observation. I stood at the perimeter of the clearing, watching wolves move through drills with a coordination that made my chest ache. I couldn't join them. My wolf was still silent. Had been silent since Jayce spoke the rejection vow.

So I ran. Human form, human speed, keeping pace along the edge while the pack moved in formation. My lungs burned. My legs shook. But I didn't stop.

Buster sat at my feet during the water break, his massive head resting on my knee. I scratched behind his ears and tried not to notice the way some of the younger wolves looked at me. Not hostile. Just curious. Like they were trying to figure out what I was doing here.

I was trying to figure out the same thing.

Maren appeared beside me so quietly I didn't hear her approach. She wore training leathers that fit like they'd been tailored, her hair pulled back in a perfect braid. She smiled.

"The pack is starting to talk, you know." Her voice was low. Conversational. Just loud enough for me to hear. "A Luna who can't run with the pack. A rogue with a dormant wolf and a debt on her name. They're calling you a gold-digger. I thought you should know, since Layton will never tell you himself."

My jaw locked. My hand started to move toward my neck. I caught it. Stopped. Folded my arms instead.

I didn't look at her. I looked straight ahead at the trees and breathed through my nose and told myself I was fine.

"Thanks for letting me know," I said quietly.

I turned and walked back toward the pack house. Not running. Not fleeing. Just walking at a pace that was steady and controlled and absolutely not composed.

Buster got up and followed me. I heard him growl. Soft. Pointed. In the direction Maren had come from.

I didn't look back.

---

The storm hit at midnight.

I was in the Luna quarters, trying to read a book I'd borrowed from the pack library, when the first crack of thunder shook the windows. The lights flickered. Rain hammered against the glass like something trying to get in.

I set the book down and pulled the blanket tighter around my shoulders. Storms didn't usually bother me. This one felt different. Heavier. Like the sky was trying to split open.

From somewhere in the pack house, I heard raised voices. Footsteps in the hallway. The sharp, clipped tones of wolves coordinating a response. Rogues at the border, I realized. Testing the territory during the chaos.

I stayed in my room. I wasn't part of the response team. I wasn't part of anything yet.

Then Buster started whimpering.

He appeared in my doorway — I didn't know how he'd gotten in, the door had been closed — his ears flat against his head, his whole body trembling. Another crack of thunder and he yelped.

"Hey," I said softly. "It's okay. Just noise."

He didn't believe me. He crossed to where I sat on the bed and pressed his head against my chest, shaking.

I wrapped my arms around him. "You're fine. You're safe."

He whined. Then he grabbed the sleeve of my shirt in his teeth — gently, carefully — and pulled.

"Buster, what—"

He pulled harder. Insistent. When I didn't move, he circled behind me and pushed at my back with his paws, herding me toward the door.

"Where are we going?"

He pushed again. Toward the hallway. Toward the door that connected the Luna quarters to the Alpha suite.

I stopped. "Buster, I can't—"

Another crack of thunder. He yelped and shoved me forward with enough force that I stumbled through the doorway into Layton's bedroom.

The room was dark. Empty. The bed was enormous and perfectly made, and it smelled like cedar so strongly I had to stop and breathe.

Buster climbed onto the bed and looked at me expectantly.

"This is a bad idea," I told him.

He whined.

I sat on the edge of the bed. Just until the storm passes, I told myself. Just until he calms down.

I lay back. Just for a second.

I fell asleep.

---

I woke to warmth.

Not blanket warmth. Body warmth. An arm locked around my waist, heavy and solid. A chest pressed against my back. Breath against the curve of my neck, slow and even.

I went rigid.

Layton.

He was asleep. His face was buried in my hair, his nose pressed against the mark on my neck. His arm was wrapped around me like I might disappear if he let go.

I could feel his heartbeat. Steady. Strong. Too close.

I didn't move. I didn't breathe. I stared at the wall and tried to figure out how to extract myself without waking him.

Then he stirred.

His arm tightened fractionally. He made a low sound in his throat — not quite a growl, not quite a sigh — and then went absolutely still.

I felt the exact second he woke up. His whole body locked. His breathing stopped.

Neither of us moved.

Then I bolted upright, scrambling out of his grip and off the bed in one graceless motion. My heart was hammering. My face was burning.

"I'm sorry," I said quickly. "Buster — the storm — he pushed me in here and I didn't mean to fall asleep—"

Layton sat up slowly. His hair was disheveled. His shirt was wrinkled. He looked at me with an expression I couldn't read.

"It's fine," he said. His voice was rough. Sleep-rough.

"I should go."

"Kensley—"

I was already at the door. I didn't look back. I walked quickly down the hall to my quarters, closed the door, and leaned against it.

My hand moved to my neck. The mark was warm. Warmer than it had been since the night he'd made it.

I pressed my fingers against it and closed my eyes.

---

I didn't see Layton for the rest of the day.

Declan found me in the library that afternoon, reading the same page I'd been staring at for twenty minutes.

"Luna," he said carefully. "The Alpha wanted me to ask if your quarters are comfortable."

I looked up. Declan's face was neutral, but his eyes were too knowing.

"They're fine," I said.

"Good. That's good." He paused. "If you need anything adjusted—"

"I don't."

He nodded slowly. "Understood."

He left. I went back to staring at the page.

That night, I made dinner again. Carried a plate to Layton's study at ten PM like I had every night for the past week. Set it down outside his door. Turned to leave.

The door opened.

He stood there, looking at the plate. Then at me. His jaw was tight. His eyes were dark.

"Thank you," he said quietly.

I nodded. Started to walk away.

"Kensley."

I stopped. Didn't turn around.

"It was just the storm," he said. "That's all."

I didn't know if he was talking about Buster or about the way he'd been holding me when we woke up.

"I know," I said.

I walked back to my quarters. Climbed into bed. Stared at the ceiling.

The scent of cedar was still in my hair.

I fell asleep with my hand pressed against the mark on my neck, and dreamed of warmth I wasn't allowed to want.
