After My Alpha Rejected Me for Another Luna Chapter 1

The bond broke at 7:42 on a Thursday evening, in front of two hundred and sixteen wolves.

I counted them earlier, when there was still time to count things. Now I stood on the polished slate at the center of the Ashvale assembly hall, and Jayce Lewis — Alpha of the Ashvale Pack, my fated mate, the man whose scent I had memorized the way other women memorize their own names — opened his mouth and severed me.

"I, Jayce Lewis, Alpha of the Ashvale Pack, reject you, Kensley Brooks, as my mate and Luna."

His voice was steady. That was the part I would remember later — not the words, which I had already braced for, but the steadiness. He said it the way a man reads a grocery list. His eyes were already sliding past my shoulder to where Zoey Gardner stood in pale blue silk, her hands folded, her chin lifted just enough to make sure the light caught her.

The mark on my neck went white-hot.

Three seconds. That was all it took. A searing, blinding pulse that I felt in my teeth, in the roots of my hair, in the back of my knees. Then it collapsed inward. The mark cooled. The heat drained. What was left behind was a raised, angry line of scar tissue — the shape of his bite, emptied out.

Inside my chest, the bond — that warm, golden thread I had carried since the first time his scent hit me — went cold. Then it went silent. Not snapped. Not torn. Closed. Like a door being shut from the other side of a room I had never been allowed to enter.

My wolf howled once.

Just once. A single tearing sound inside my skull, the kind of noise an animal makes when something is taken from its mouth. And then she went quiet. Not sleeping. Not sulking. Gone in the way a light goes out.

I pressed my hand flat against my thigh to stop the shaking.

Jayce was still speaking. I made myself hear him.

"—and by the authority vested in me as Alpha, I transfer to Kensley Brooks the outstanding debt of honor accrued during our courtship period, including but not limited to territorial hospitality costs, ceremonial provisions, and pack medical services rendered. Total sum to be entered into the Ashvale ledger and made available to the debtor upon request."

A debt. He was saddling me with a debt.

I heard someone in the second row exhale — pity, maybe, or satisfaction. I didn't look. I kept my eyes on Jayce's throat, on the pulse there, on the small muscle that jumped once when he said the word *debtor*.

So. He knew what he was doing.

He finished. He turned his head toward Zoey. She smiled at him, small and careful, and he crossed the slate to take her hand, and the pack closed around them the way water closes around a dropped stone.

I was still standing.

Someone was supposed to escort me out. That was protocol. I felt a beta shift half a step toward me from the left, uncertain, and I moved before he could touch me.

One foot in front of the other. That was the whole plan.

The hall was long. I remembered thinking, when I first walked into it three years ago on Jayce's arm, that it was the most beautiful room I had ever seen. Vaulted timber. Silver sconces. The Ashvale crest carved above the doorway in old oak. Tonight the doorway seemed very far away, and my legs seemed to belong to someone I did not know.

I did not kneel. I did not beg. I did not turn around.

At the threshold, I felt the weight of two hundred and sixteen pairs of eyes on my back and I did not give them my face. I kept walking. Down the stone steps. Across the courtyard where I had once eaten peaches off a plate Jayce held for me. Past the fountain. Past the guardhouse. The two sentries at the gate did not meet my eyes — they had been told, clearly, not to.

The border marker was a carved stone the height of my hip. Ashvale territory ended at its base. My hand brushed the top of it as I passed, cold granite under my palm, and I stepped over the line.

The air on the other side did not feel different. That was the worst part. I had expected — I don't know what I had expected. Some acknowledgment from the world that a thing had ended.

Nothing. Just cold pine and the sound of my own breathing.

I walked until the pack house lights were only a smear behind the trees. Then I stopped, put my hand flat against the scar on my neck, and waited to see if my wolf would say anything.

She didn't.

Somewhere behind me, through the trees, I could hear the first strains of music starting up in the hall. A celebration. His, and hers.

I took my hand off my neck and kept walking.
