Chapter 4

He passed me in the corridor at half past nine.

I was being escorted back from a secondary examination—Ophelia had insisted on checking the rib she suspected was fractured, not just bruised. I walked slowly, one hand trailing the wall, and the healing wing felt narrower than usual. Everything felt narrower. My wolf's aura had been so dim these past days that I could feel the absence of it like a missing tooth—the gap where something used to be.

I heard him before I saw him. That unhurried stride. The kind of footfall that doesn't announce itself because it doesn't need to.

Leif Ashford came around the corner with two Council enforcers at his back and a folder of documents under his arm. He was reading something as he walked. He didn't look up immediately.

Then he did.

I don't know what my face was doing. Probably nothing useful. I was bruised along the left side of my jaw and my left eye was still swollen enough to narrow my vision. I was wearing a healing wing gown and someone else's cardigan. I was the Luna of Ironveil Pack and I looked like something the pack had dragged in from the border and left there.

He stopped.

Three seconds. I counted them without meaning to.

And then his scent hit me.

It wasn't an accident. I understood that immediately, the way you understand something that bypasses language and goes straight to the part of you that is animal. He had been masking it—whatever Lycan royalty smelled like, he had been keeping it contained—and in those three seconds he let it go.

Storm-grey. Winter cedar. Something electric underneath, like the air before lightning decides where to land.

My wolf moved.

Not much. Not enough to speak, not enough to do anything except lift her head from the dark place she'd been lying in for days and turn toward it. Like a plant turning toward a window it didn't know was there.

I felt my breath catch. Just once. Just slightly.

He looked at me for those three seconds with an expression I couldn't fully read—not pity, not the careful professional neutrality he'd used with Graham in the corridor yesterday. Something quieter than both. Something that felt like it had been held in place for a very long time.

Then he put the mask back on. Restored the scent. Walked past me without a word.

I stood there for a moment after he turned the corner.

The escort touched my elbow gently. I started walking again.

I didn't let myself think about it. Not then. I filed it away in the same place I was filing everything else that needed to wait—behind the Tribunal, behind the device on the shelf, behind my mother's slow breathing and the three days I had left to hold everything together.

But my wolf didn't lie back down.

---

That afternoon I heard Graham's Beta working through the Tribunal logistics in the conference room down the hall. The door was open. He wasn't bothering to lower his voice.

Mind-link relay confirmed to fourteen allied territories. Broadcast window set for eleven a.m. Councilman Thorne's office had approved the formal framing: confession and sentencing proceedings, Luna Allison Crawford, Ironveil Pack.

Confession and sentencing.

I sat with that language for a moment. He had built the stage perfectly. Every allied Alpha who believed I had stolen from them would be watching. Maximum audience. Maximum humiliation. A public record that would follow my name into whatever exile they planned for me afterward.

Rylee had chosen a white dress. I heard that from Nora, delivered in the same footnote style she used for everything—tucked into a corridor report left outside my door, three words in the margin: *white dress. coronation.*

I almost smiled.

---

That night I sat beside my mother for a long time before I spoke.

The room was quiet. Just the monitors and the moonlight and the small blue glow of the equipment keeping her here. I held her hand—her fingers were cool, lighter than I remembered, the copper bracelet loose around her wrist now.

I didn't know if she could hear me. The Healer said sometimes they could, in the shallow stages. Sometimes not.

I told her anyway.

"I found a way," I said. My voice came out lower than I intended. "I can't tell you it's safe. It's not. But it's real, and it's already in motion, and I need you to know that whatever happens tomorrow—I didn't let them win."

She didn't move. Her breathing stayed slow and even.

"I'm sorry I didn't see it sooner." I pressed my thumb lightly over her knuckles. "I'm sorry I kept believing the wrong things. I kept thinking if I held on hard enough—" I stopped. Started again. "I thought the bond meant something that it didn't. I thought I could protect you by staying inside it."

The monitor beeped softly. Once. Twice.

"I'm not staying inside it anymore."

I sat there a little longer. The moonlight shifted across the shelf—across the photograph, the dried flower, the place where the device sat invisible behind them.

Then my wolf stirred.

Not the grief-sound from before. Something different. A half-formed syllable, rough at the edges, like a voice that had been silent so long it had forgotten how to shape words.

I couldn't make it out yet.

But I heard it. For the first time in years, I heard it.

I straightened in the chair. Smoothed my hand once more over my mother's fingers. Stood up.

Tomorrow at eleven, the whole world would be watching.

I was ready.
