Chapter 5

Nora found me in the healing wing corridor at seven forty-three in the morning.

She didn't say anything. She just walked past me in the opposite direction, close enough that our shoulders almost touched, and when I turned to look she was already rounding the corner. But for one second—one—her eyes met mine.

One short nod.

That was all.

I faced forward again and kept walking. My ribs still pulled on the left side when I breathed too deep. The bruising along my jaw had faded from purple to a sickly yellow-green, which Ophelia said was progress and which I thought looked like something dying slowly. My wolf was still dim, still quiet—but not the same quiet as before. She was awake. She had been awake since that moment in the corridor, since the storm-cedar scent and the three seconds that I had filed away and refused to examine.

She was awake, and she was waiting.

So was I.

They brought me out at ten fifty-five.

Two of Graham's Deltas, one on each side. Not rough about it—they didn't need to be. I was wearing what Ophelia had left for me: clean clothes, nothing that announced rank. No Luna's mark visible. Just a woman with a healing bruise and a wolf so dim she barely registered to the wolves in the courtyard.

That was the point. I understood that. Graham had dressed the stage carefully. Every detail was a choice.

The courtyard was full.

I had stood in this courtyard a hundred times. I knew the way the morning light came over the east wall, the way sound traveled in it, the way a crowd arranged itself around an Alpha's position. I had helped design the stone layout when we expanded the pack house in our seventh year. I knew every inch of it.

I looked at it now like I was seeing it for the first time, and I memorized everything.

The allied Alphas stood in a loose formation to the right—eight of them, maybe nine. Marcus Webb at the front, the way he always positioned himself when he wanted to signal seniority. His jaw was set. His eyes were hard with the particular righteousness of a man who has already decided the verdict and is here to watch it formalized. The others had the same look. Victims with power. There is nothing more certain than that.

Graham stood at the center of the courtyard in full Alpha regalia. Dark jacket, the Ironveil crest at his collar, his posture carrying the effortless authority that had once made me proud to stand beside him. He looked like what he was: the Alpha of a dominant Northeast pack, presiding over justice.

He looked like a lie wearing a very good suit.

Rylee stood slightly behind his left shoulder.

The white dress was exactly what Nora's footnote had promised. Simple cut, no ornamentation. Calculated. She had dressed herself as something clean, something wronged, something that needed protecting. Her hair was down. Her chin was tilted at that angle I had spent years watching without understanding—the submissive microgesture, the performance of fragility.

Her eyes found mine the moment I entered the courtyard.

She smiled. Just slightly. Just enough for me to see it and no one else.

I looked through her like she was glass.

Councilman Thorne stood at the formal table they had set up against the north wall, his Council seal displayed, his expression carrying the particular gravity of a man who considers procedural correctness a form of virtue. He had a voice like a closing door—heavy, final, designed to make everything it touched feel official.

"This Tribunal is now in session," he said. "Transmitted via mind-link relay to all allied territories and Council jurisdictions. The matter before this body: alleged embezzlement of allied pack funds, Luna Allison Crawford of Ironveil Pack, presiding Alpha Graham Morgan." He looked at me over the table. "Luna Crawford. You have been given the opportunity to address this body. Please make your statement."

Every wolf in the courtyard was watching me. Thousands more were watching through the mind-link, connected across the Northeast, waiting.

Graham's eyes were on me. Steady. Expectant. He had written the first line of my confession himself. I knew exactly what he wanted me to say.

I opened my mouth.

And Rylee stepped forward.

She couldn't help it. I had known she wouldn't be able to. Eight years of patience and she had made it all the way to the edge of the finish line, and the victory was right there, complete and total, and she was not the kind of woman who could let someone else speak the words that belonged to her.

"Actually," she said, her voice carrying that soft, wounded register she had perfected, "I think there are things this Tribunal should hear from me first."

Graham turned his head toward her, a fraction of a second too slow.

Thorne's pen paused above his record.

And somewhere in the mind-link relay, in the room two floors above us where a small black device sat behind a photograph on a shelf, the feed was live.

I stood very still and let her walk into it.
