Chapter 3

Rylee came every day.

I noticed it on the second visit. She would arrive about an hour after I left—long enough that we never crossed paths in the corridor, short enough that I wondered if she was timing it deliberately. The duty nurse's log confirmed it. Ten minutes the first day. Fifteen the second. Twenty-two the third.

She was getting comfortable.

I watched her through the small window in the door once, from the far end of the corridor where the angle made me invisible. She sat in the chair beside my mother's bed—my chair, the one I dragged in from the waiting room on my first visit—and she talked. I couldn't hear the words through the glass. But I could see her face, and it wasn't the face she wore in front of Graham or the allied Alphas or the Council enforcers. It was looser. Satisfied. The way a cat looks sitting in a patch of sun it has decided belongs to it.

My mother lay still. She didn't turn her head toward Rylee. She didn't turn it away either. She was past the point of spending energy on things she couldn't change.

I made myself memorize the room. The angle of the window light. The position of the monitoring equipment. The small shelf beside the headboard where my mother kept her things—a photograph of the two of us from before everything fell apart, a dried flower from the garden she used to tend before her wolf gave out, and a thin bracelet I had braided from copper wire when I was nine years old and convinced it would keep her safe.

I had believed that for a long time. That if I made something with my hands and gave it to her, it would be enough.

I stopped believing a lot of things this week.

The shelf was positioned at the exact center of the room's sightline. Whoever sat in that chair would be directly in frame. I had measured it with my eyes three times before I was sure.

It was enough.

---

I went in alone that night.

Ophelia had arranged it. She didn't ask me why I needed an unlogged visit after lights-out in the healing wing. She just told me the corridor camera on the east side would cycle through a thirty-second maintenance loop at eleven forty-five, and that the night nurse took her rounds at the far end of the building at eleven fifty. She said it the way she'd told me about the pup—no softening, no performance. Just the facts, laid clean.

I had thirty seconds and a clear corridor.

The room was dim. Just the low blue glow of the monitors and a strip of moonlight through the curtain gap. My mother was asleep, her breathing slow and shallow, the rhythm of a body working hard to do something it used to do without thinking.

I moved to the shelf.

The device was in my palm, wrapped in a square of cloth. I unwrapped it carefully and set it against the back of the shelf, behind the photograph, angled slightly forward. The lens was smaller than my thumbnail. In the dim light it was invisible.

I pressed my fingers against it once to make sure it held. Then I straightened.

And without meaning to—without deciding to—I pressed my fingers to my neck.

Sixteen years of habit. I had done it ten thousand times. Whenever I was thinking through something difficult, working a problem, holding a decision in both hands to test its weight. Graham used to say I did it when I was at my most dangerous. He said it like it was charming.

I pressed my fingers to the mark and felt—

Nothing clean. Nothing warm. A faint pulse, yes, but wrong. Like pressing your hand to a wound that has been infected so long it no longer hurts the way it should. A sickening, low throb. The ghost of something that used to mean everything.

I pulled my hand away.

I stood there in the blue-lit dark and looked at my mother's face. The lines around her mouth. The way her hair had gone fully white in the last two years, faster than it should have. The bracelet on her wrist, the copper one, still there after all this time.

I didn't say anything. I didn't trust my voice with the things I would have wanted to say.

I just touched the back of her hand once, lightly, and left.

---

He arrived the next morning.

I felt it before I saw it—a shift in the air pressure of the entire pack house, the way a room changes when something with real weight walks into it. Through my sealed mind-link I felt nothing, but my wolf lifted her head for the first time in days. Not in fear. In recognition of something she classified, instinctively, as significant.

I heard Graham's voice in the corridor outside my door. Clipped. Tighter than usual.

Then another voice, lower, unhurried. The kind of voice that didn't need to work to fill a space.

"The forensic trail is unusually clean, Alpha Morgan. In my experience, that is rarely accidental."

A pause.

"I'll need the original transaction records. The ones filed with the Council archive. Not your copies."

I lay still and listened to the quality of Graham's silence.

Leif Ashford. The Council's chief judicial enforcer. I had never met him. But I knew his name the way you know the name of something that could either save you or end you, and you don't yet know which.

My wolf made a sound I hadn't heard from her before. Not grief. Not warning.

Something quieter than both. Something that felt, strangely, like the first clean breath of air after a very long time underground.

I pressed my hand flat against the mattress and stared at the ceiling.

Three days.
