Chapter 3

The rain stopped at some point, but I didn't notice when.

What I noticed was the scent.

It cut through the blood in my nose, through the mud caked on my skin, through the hollow ache where the bond used to live. Ancient cedar and iron—sharp and grounding, like walking into a forest after a storm. It didn't belong here. Nothing that clean belonged in rogue territory.

I tried to lift my head. Failed. My ribs screamed. My vision swam.

Footsteps. Slow. Deliberate. Coming closer.

I forced my eyes open. A figure knelt beside me in the mud—male, broad-shouldered, his face shadowed in the pre-dawn darkness. He didn't touch me. Just stayed there, crouched low, his head tilted slightly like he was listening to something I couldn't hear.

"Easy," he said. His voice was low. Calm. "You're safe."

I tried to laugh. It came out as a wet cough that tasted like copper.

His hand moved—slowly, telegraphing the motion—and pressed two fingers against my wrist. Checking my pulse. His touch was warm. Steady. Clinical.

"Fractured ribs," he said quietly. "Possible internal bleeding. Exposure. You're hypothermic." He paused. "And you've been running on an empty tank for a while now."

I stared at him. His face was coming into focus now—strong jaw, dark hair plastered to his forehead from the rain, eyes that looked almost gray in the dim light. He didn't smell like the rogues. Didn't smell like pack, either. Just that cedar-and-iron scent that made my wolf stir faintly, confused.

"Who—" My voice cracked. I swallowed and tried again. "Who are you?"

"Someone who's going to get you out of the rain," he said. "Can you stand?"

I shook my head. Tried anyway. My legs folded immediately.

He caught me before I hit the ground again. One arm slid beneath my knees, the other behind my shoulders, and he lifted me like I weighed nothing. I should have fought. Should have clawed at him, demanded he put me down. But I was so tired. And he was warm.

My wolf—silent for so long—whispered something I couldn't quite hear.

"I've got you," he said. And started walking.

---

I woke to firelight and the smell of herbs.

The ceiling above me was rough stone. Wooden beams crossed overhead, age-darkened and solid. I was lying on something soft—a cot, maybe, with clean blankets tucked around me. My ribs were wrapped tight in bandages that smelled faintly of comfrey and arnica.

I tried to sit up. Pain lanced through my side and I gasped.

"Don't." The voice came from my left. "You'll tear the binding."

I turned my head.

The stranger sat in a chair beside the cot, a wooden tray balanced on his knees. He was grinding something in a mortar—dried leaves, from the look of it. His hands moved with practiced efficiency. He didn't look at me.

In the firelight, I could see him clearly now. Late twenties, maybe early thirties. Strong features. A scar cutting through his left eyebrow. He wore simple clothes—a dark shirt, worn trousers, boots caked with mud. Nothing that marked him as pack or rogue or anything in between.

"Where am I?" I asked.

"Safe," he said. Still grinding. "That's all you need to know right now."

My wolf stirred. Not afraid. Just... watchful.

"Who are you?"

"Rhys." He set the mortar aside and finally looked at me. His eyes were gray—storm-cloud gray, the kind that made you think of winter mornings. "I'm a healer. No pack. No territory. I travel the borderlands and help who I can."

I stared at him. "Why?"

"Why what?"

"Why help me?" My voice came out harder than I meant it to. "What do you want?"

Rhys tilted his head slightly. Something flickered in his expression—not pity, but something close to understanding. "Nothing," he said quietly. "You don't owe me anything."

The words hit me like a fist to the chest.

Seven years. Seven years of owing. Of payment extracted in silence and submission and blood. Seven years of being told—implicitly, constantly—that kindness was currency and I was always in debt.

And this stranger, this nameless healer with no pack and no claim, was telling me I owed him nothing.

I didn't realize I was shaking until Rhys stood and crossed to the cot. He didn't touch me. Just knelt beside it, eye level, his expression calm and open.

"You're safe here," he said again. "No one's coming for you. No one's going to hurt you. You can stay as long as you need."

My throat closed.

Rhys held my gaze for a moment longer. Then he stood, picked up the tray, and moved back to the table. "I'm making a poultice for your ribs. It'll help with the pain. Try to rest."

I watched him work. Watched the way his hands moved—confident but not forceful. Watched the way he kept his distance, gave me space, didn't crowd or command or expect.

My wolf whispered again. Louder this time.

*Safe.*

I closed my eyes and let myself believe it.

---

The first week blurred together.

Rhys kept his word. He asked nothing. Demanded nothing. He changed my bandages twice a day, brought me food I could barely taste, and left me alone when I couldn't stand the weight of another person's presence.

At night, the dreams came.

I'd wake screaming, clawing at the scar on my neck—the cold, hollow place where the mark used to be. My wolf would thrash inside me, howling for something that wasn't there anymore, and I'd press my hands over my ears trying to block out the sound of Adam's voice speaking the rejection vow over and over and over.

Rhys never came running. He'd just appear in the doorway, silent and solid, and wait until I could breathe again.

On the seventh night, he brought something with him.

I was sitting on the edge of the cot, shaking, my hands still pressed against my neck. Rhys crossed the room and knelt. He set something down on the floor between us.

A wolf-dog.

Gaunt. Filthy. Trembling so hard I could see his ribs shake beneath matted fur. His eyes—pale amber, too wide—darted between me and Rhys like he was waiting for a blow.

"His name is Ghost," Rhys said quietly. "Found him three days ago in a trap. He doesn't trust anyone yet."

I stared at the animal. At the way he flinched when I moved. At the raw, bleeding wound around his front leg where the trap had bitten in.

"I thought," Rhys continued, "you might understand each other."

Ghost's eyes locked on mine.

I knew that look. I'd seen it in the mirror every day for seven years.

Slowly—so slowly my ribs screamed—I slid off the cot and onto the floor. Ghost's ears flattened. I stopped moving. Just sat there, one hand extended, palm up.

Waiting.

Ghost stared at my hand. His nose twitched.

I didn't move. Didn't speak. Just waited.

Finally—after what felt like hours—Ghost crept forward. One step. Then another. His nose touched my palm. Cold and wet and tentative.

Something inside me cracked open.

Not my wolf. Not yet. But something close.

Ghost pressed his muzzle into my palm and exhaled—a long, shuddering breath that sounded almost like relief.

I looked up at Rhys. He was watching us with an expression I couldn't name.

"Thank you," I whispered.

Rhys nodded once. Then he stood and left us alone.

Ghost curled up beside me on the floor. I buried my fingers in his matted fur and closed my eyes.

For the first time in seven years, I didn't feel hollow.
