My Mate Abandoned Our Dying Pup

8.9 / 10.0
For six years, she has prepared for the same ritual, only to be forsaken every time—the final abandonment leaving her wounded on asphalt, carrying a child who never drew breath. With her wolf now a hollow echo and the broken bond stirring once more, something unfamiliar awakens within her. Not fear. A dangerous pull that could lure her back into the nightmare she barely escaped. A haunting werewolf romance of grief, endurance, and the unrelenting grip of a mate who won't release her—even when surrender means losing everything.

My Mate Abandoned Our Dying Pup Chapter 1

The hundredth ceremony died at 6:42 on a Friday evening, exactly eighteen minutes before I was supposed to be marked.

I stood in front of the full-length mirror in the ceremonial mating gown. I had put this same silk dress on and taken it off ninety-nine times over six years. My fingers closed around the tiny crystal vial hanging beneath my collarbones. Inside was a tuft of silver-tipped birth fur—the only proof my unborn pup had ever existed before Rhodes left me bleeding on a dark highway two years ago.

I reached inside my chest, searching for the familiar presence of my wolf.

Nothing. Just dead, hollow silence.

Then, through our incomplete mate bond, I felt the shift. It wasn’t panic. It wasn’t grief. It was the heavy, careless certainty of a man who believed his mate was an immovable piece of furniture. Rhodes’s focus snapped away from me, pivoting across town toward the pack clinic.

A sharp knock broke the stillness.

Beta Torin stood in the doorway, eyes glued to the floorboards. "Alpha Rhodes had to leave for the clinic," Torin said, his voice flat with forced duty. "Milena called. Macy has a low-grade fever. He said... we'll reschedule."

*Reschedule.* For the hundredth time.

Through the bond, the thin tether linking my soul to Rhodes went completely ice-cold. It felt like a heavy door locking shut in an empty room. My mark burned, then turned numb, like frostbite settling deep into the flesh of my neck.

My wolf didn't whimper. She didn't rage. She was completely still.

I didn't answer Torin. I reached up, unclasped the heavy gold Shadowridge mating pendant from my neck, and set it on the marble dresser. The ceremonial moonflowers beside it were already turning brown at the edges.

I smoothed the front of my gown, walked straight past Torin, and stepped out of the pack house into the damp evening air. I took no bags. I left no note.

Miles away in the clinic, sitting beside Milena's chair while she sobbed over a child's thermometer, Rhodes would feel a sharp, glacial snap across his collarbone. He would rub the incomplete mark on his neck, frown, and dismiss it as an itch.

He didn't know I was already gone.

I walked through the pre-dawn mist to the eastern border. Deep in the pines stood a jagged moss-covered boulder—the prime anchor stone of the ancient wolfsbane wards. For six years, Rhodes had praised his border patrols for keeping Shadowridge safe from rogue raids. He never knew that every full moon, I bled my own secret energy into these stones to weave an impenetrable barrier.

I laid my palm against the cold rock.

With three deliberate breaths, I unwove the outermost layer. The silver luminescence laced through the roots of the pines flickered, hissed, and died. It was not vandalism; it was a quiet extraction of my protection.

Using a private, encrypted Lycan frequency I had kept dormant for years, I transferred the ward’s anchor code to a single recipient.

Leaves rustled behind me. A massive slate-grey wolf with deep claw scars across his left eye stepped from the brush. Winston. Rhodes had exiled the scarred omega months ago because Milena claimed his face frightened her daughter. Allyson had fed him in secret. Now, Winston pressed his broad snout against my knuckles, fell into step at my side, and matched my stride toward the highway.

Dawn was breaking when we reached the iron gates of the Silvercrest Lycan estate.

Prince Nash was already waiting in the stone courtyard. He wore a crisp black coat, broad shoulders silhouetted against the morning sky, smelling intoxicatingly of frosted cedar, midnight ozone, and bergamot.

He didn't run to me. He didn't offer pity.

Nash set a thick, wax-sealed leather dossier onto the courtyard table. "Two years of border logs," he said, his voice a low, steady rumble of raw authority. "Bank accounts Milena opened under dead mercenaries' names. And the signed confessions of three rogue captains Armani hired the night he died. It’s yours to burn them with whenever you say the word."

He opened a velvet box in his palm. Inside rested the Silvercrest Lycan courtship pendant—a crest of pure platinum set with an uncut white diamond.

"May I?" Nash asked quietly.

I looked down at the dossier, flipped open the first three pages, and saw the bank transfers that funded the ambush that took my baby. A cold, lethal calm settled over my spine.

I lifted my chin. "Yes."

Nash stepped close. As his scarred fingers brushed the sensitive skin of my throat to fasten the clasp, his royal aura washed over me like liquid lightning.

Deep beneath my ribs, a spark ignited. A low, rolling pulse rattled through my marrow. My inner wolf, dead for two long years, stirred and raised her head.

Forty-eight hours later, the Shadowridge perimeter collapsed.

Without the wolfsbane wards, dozens of starving rogues tore through the eastern tree line. By midnight, three Delta warriors were critically mauled. Alarms wailed across the valley.

Rhodes kicked open the doors of his master bedroom, smelling of hospital disinfectant and stale coffee, shouting commands into his phone.

"Torin! Where are the reinforcements?" Rhodes roared, stopping dead in the center of the room.

The ceremonial chamber was pitch-black. The air smelled of nothing—not wild jasmine, not winter pine. My scent was completely gone.

On the dresser, the gold mating pendant lay untouched beside a vase of moonflowers that had rotted into shriveled black sticks.

Torin stumbled into the doorway, his uniform torn and covered in delta blood, clutching an urgent border report.

"Alpha," Torin choked out, his eyes wide with sheer panic. "The eastern line is overrun. The wards... the wards didn't fail. They were systematically shut down from the inside."
