Chapter 4

The mornings became a ritual.

Rhys would knock—three soft taps—and wait until I answered before opening the door. He'd set a tray on the table by the window: oatmeal with honey, sometimes eggs, always tea that smelled like chamomile and something sharper I couldn't name. Then he'd check my bandages, his hands clinical and careful, never lingering.

"How's the pain?" he'd ask.

"Better," I'd say. And it was true. The fractures were healing. The bruises had faded from purple to yellow-green. But there were other pains—the ones that lived deeper—that I didn't know how to talk about.

Rhys never pushed.

He'd finish the bandage change, nod once, and leave. "I'll be outside if you need anything."

Not *call me.* Not *come find me.* Just... *if you need.*

I started cataloguing it. The way he phrased things. The way he moved through space—always giving me room, never blocking the door, never standing over me. When he handed me something, he set it down within reach instead of making me take it from his hand.

Small things. Deliberate things.

Things Adam never did.

My wolf noticed too. She'd been so quiet since the bond severed—barely a whisper, like she'd curled up in some dark corner of my mind to die. But now, when Rhys's scent drifted through the cabin—that cedar and iron smell that made the air feel cleaner somehow—she'd stir. Just a little. A flicker of warmth I didn't know what to do with.

*He's not like him,* she murmured one morning as Rhys left the cabin.

I didn't answer her. Didn't want to examine what that meant.

But I kept watching.

---

By the third week, I could walk without my ribs screaming.

Ghost stuck close—always within arm's reach, his pale amber eyes tracking my every move. We'd started training together. Simple things. I'd hold out a piece of dried meat and make him wait before taking it. Teaching him patience. Teaching him that not every hand was a threat.

Teaching myself the same thing.

Rhys watched sometimes from the doorway, arms crossed, expression unreadable. He never commented. Never offered advice unless I asked.

One afternoon, I looked up from where Ghost and I sat in the clearing and found Rhys gone. Just... gone. No note. No explanation.

Panic flared hot and immediate. My wolf snarled. *He left. They always leave.*

But an hour later, Rhys came back carrying firewood and a canvas bag that smelled like fresh bread. He set both down by the cabin door, saw me staring, and tilted his head.

"You okay?"

I swallowed. Nodded.

He studied me for a moment—those storm-gray eyes seeing too much—then nodded back and went inside.

He didn't ask what I'd been afraid of. Didn't make me explain.

That night, my wolf whispered again. Louder this time.

*Safe.*

---

I started exploring the borderlands in the fourth week.

Ghost came with me, his limp almost gone now, his ribs no longer visible through his fur. We moved through the unclaimed forest—the stretch of territory too wild for packs to bother with, too dangerous for most rogues to survive.

But there were wolves here. Scattered. Hidden.

I found the first group by accident. Three females huddled beneath a rock overhang, their clothes torn, their eyes hollow. One of them—barely more than a girl—had a fresh bite mark on her shoulder. Not a mate mark. Something uglier.

I sat down in the mud a few feet away. Didn't speak. Just opened the bag Rhys had given me and pulled out bread and dried meat. Set it between us.

The girl stared at the food. Then at me.

"It's yours," I said quietly. "No strings."

She didn't move for a long time. Finally, her hand shot out—fast, desperate—and grabbed the bread. She tore into it like she hadn't eaten in days. Probably hadn't.

The other two watched. Waited. When the girl didn't collapse or get hurt, they crept forward and took their share.

I stayed until they finished eating. Then I stood and walked away.

The next day, I came back. Brought more food. Found two more wolves waiting with the first three.

By the end of the week, there were eight.

One of them was Soren Vael.

He was older than the others—maybe mid-thirties—with graying hair and a scar across his throat that looked like someone had tried to rip it out. He sat at the edge of the group, quiet and watchful, and when I set the food down, he took his share last. Made sure the younger ones ate first.

I sat down beside him in the mud.

He glanced at me. Said nothing.

We ate in silence.

The next morning, when I came back, Soren had built a fire. The others were gathered around it—still wary, still broken, but... there. Present.

I sat down in the circle. Ghost curled up at my feet.

No one asked who I was. No one demanded I explain myself.

We just sat together as the sun rose.

And something inside me—something I thought had died in that corridor when Adam's hand closed around my throat—started to wake up.

---

Meanwhile, two hundred miles south, Adam Pierce stood in his study staring at a single line of text.

The ancient book lay open on his desk—leather-bound, pages yellowed with age, the script barely legible. His scholars had found it buried in the pack archives after weeks of desperate searching. The answer to why his wolves were losing their shifts. Why pups were being born without wolves. Why his strongest warriors could barely lift their weapons.

*A Lunar bloodline mark, severed, withdraws all protective suppression immediately and permanently.*

Adam read it again.

Then again.

His hands started shaking.

Seven years. Seven years Chloe had stood beside him, silent and enduring, and her blood—her fucking *blood*—had been holding back a curse he didn't even know existed. Every shift. Every hunt. Every moment of strength his pack had ever shown.

It was her.

All of it.

And he'd thrown her away.

Adam's fist slammed into the wall. Plaster cracked. His knuckles split. He didn't feel it.

Behind him, Mae's voice drifted through the open door. "Adam? Are you coming to bed?"

He stared at the bloodstain spreading across his knuckles.

Then he looked back at the book.

*Withdrawn immediately and permanently.*

His wolf—strong, dominant, Alpha-born—flickered inside him like a candle in the wind.

And for the first time in his life, Adam Pierce felt afraid.
