Chapter 4

The war table in Zain's strategy room was larger than my entire childhood bedroom. Dark wood, scarred with use, surrounded by chairs that had seated Alphas and Betas for decades. I stood at one end with my hand-drawn maps spread across the surface, explaining the vulnerability gap in the southern corridor that Silverfang's withdrawal had created.

"Here," I said, tapping a section marked in grey. "Three rogue packs have been testing this zone for two weeks. They're coordinated. Someone's organizing them."

Zain stood across from me, arms crossed. Marcus was to his right. The Gamma—a wolf named Theo with sharp eyes and a scar across his jaw—was to his left. All three were watching me with varying degrees of attention. Theo looked skeptical. Marcus looked resigned. Zain looked... still.

That particular kind of stillness I was starting to recognize. Not boredom. Not disinterest. Something else.

"Your recommendation?" Zain asked.

I pulled out the second map—patrol routes I'd drafted the night before. "Split your eastern patrols into rotating shifts here, here, and here. It spreads your coverage but prevents pattern recognition. The rogues are smart. They'll adapt to static positioning. This keeps them guessing."

Theo frowned. "That's a significant resource commitment for a border that isn't technically ours."

"It will be," Zain said quietly. He didn't look at Theo. He was looking at my map. "If Moonveil stabilizes under our protection, that corridor becomes a natural expansion zone. Ms. Collins is thinking three moves ahead. You should try it."

Theo's mouth thinned, but he nodded. Marcus made a note on his tablet. I kept my expression neutral and my satisfaction internal. Zain's public support wasn't just political. It was a statement to his inner circle: I wasn't a contracted consultant they could dismiss. I was someone their Alpha had elevated to the war table as an equal.

The meeting ran another hour. When it finally ended, Zain dismissed Marcus and Theo with a gesture. They filed out. I started gathering my maps.

"Leave them," Zain said.

I looked up. He was still standing across the table, hands resting on the wood's edge. His scent—cedar and something sharper—was faint but present. My wolf stirred. I ignored her.

"I want you to join the dawn border run tomorrow," he said. "You need to see the terrain yourself. Maps are useful. Direct knowledge is better."

I hesitated. Border runs were pack business. Intimate business. Wolves ran together to reinforce bonds, to mark territory with their combined scent. It wasn't a professional briefing. It was something closer.

"Is that necessary?" I asked carefully.

His gaze held mine. "Yes."

One word. Final. I felt the command in it even though he hadn't used his Alpha tone. I also felt something else—a pull, faint but insistent, like a current beneath still water. My wolf pressed closer to the surface. I forced her down.

"What time?" I asked.

"Dawn. I'll meet you at the north trailhead."

I nodded. Gathered my maps after all, because leaving them felt like leaving part of myself exposed. Zain watched me fold them with that unnerving focus, then stepped aside to let me pass. I walked out without looking back.

But I felt his eyes on me all the way to the door.

---

Dawn came cold and grey. I dressed in running clothes and drove to the north trailhead—a clearing at the edge of Zain's territory where the forest opened into trails that stretched for miles. Zain was already there. So was his wolf.

I'd never seen a Lycan in full shift before. He was massive—easily twice the size of any Alpha wolf I'd encountered, with dark charcoal fur that caught the pre-dawn light like smoke. His eyes were pale gold, glowing faintly in the dim. He watched me approach without moving.

I shifted. My wolf emerged smaller than I remembered—silver fur dimmed after six years of an unfulfilled bond, body lean but lacking the full power I knew she'd once had. I felt the difference like a loss. Zain's wolf tilted his head slightly, and I had the sudden, irrational sense that he saw it too.

We ran.

He set the pace—steady, ground-eating, through trails I didn't know. I followed. The forest blurred past. My wolf stretched into the rhythm, remembering what it felt like to move without restraint. Zain stayed close. Not crowding. Just... present. His massive form a dark shadow in my peripheral vision.

We'd been running maybe twenty minutes when he slowed and turned toward a ridge overlooking the southern corridor. I followed. We stopped at the edge, both breathing hard. The sun was just starting to break over the horizon, painting the valley below in gold and grey.

That's when the wind shifted.

His scent hit me full force—no distance, no walls, no interference. Dark cedar and thunderstorm, so concentrated it felt like breathing lightning. My wolf surged forward with a violence that nearly knocked me off my feet. The word slammed through my consciousness like a bell: *MATE.*

No.

No, that wasn't possible. I'd already had a fated mate. The Moon Goddess didn't grant second chances unless—

Zain's wolf turned toward me. His eyes blazed gold. His body went completely still in that predator's freeze that meant he'd caught something. My scent. White jasmine and moonlight, Nadia had once told me. He was scenting me the way I was scenting him.

The bond snapped into place between us like a cord pulled taut.

We both stopped breathing.

Zain shifted. Human form, naked in the cold dawn, his body all controlled power and sharp lines. He stepped toward me. I shifted too—faster than I meant to, my hands shaking, my wolf howling inside my head. He stopped three feet away. Close enough that I could feel the heat of him. Close enough that his scent was overwhelming.

"Audrey," he said quietly. My name in his voice sounded like a claim.

He moved closer. His hand came up, fingers brushing the curve of my neck where a mate's mark would go. His teeth grazed my skin—not biting, just testing, just *there*—and I felt my wolf bare her throat in response, instinct overriding everything.

Then he pulled back.

The restraint was visible. Physical. His jaw locked. His hand dropped. He took one step back, then another, putting space between us that felt like tearing.

I stood there, shaking, my wolf screaming at me to close the distance. The bond hummed between us—new, raw, undeniable. My hands were steady when I lifted them. My voice was not quite.

"I need time," I said.

Zain went very still. That predator's stillness. Listening.

"The contract stays the contract," I continued. My throat was tight. "I need to know this is real. Not just the bond's chemistry. Not just... fate deciding for me again. I need time."

Silence. The forest around us was so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat. Zain's gaze held mine—pale gold, burning, but controlled. He didn't move toward me. He didn't argue. He just looked at me like he was memorizing something.

"Take what you need," he said finally. His voice was low, rough. "I'll wait."

He shifted back into his wolf. Turned. And ran back toward the trailhead without looking back, leaving me standing alone on the ridge with the sun rising and the bond between us singing in my blood like a promise I wasn't ready to keep.
