Chapter 5

I returned to work the next morning like nothing had changed.

My maps were still spread across the desk in my cabin. The territorial reports Marcus had sent needed review. Moonveil's Omega housing project required final approval on the construction timeline. I had a conference call scheduled with my father about resource allocation. Normal things. Professional things.

Except nothing was normal.

The bond hummed beneath my ribs like a second heartbeat. Constant. Insistent. I could feel Zain on the other end of it—not his thoughts, not yet, but his presence. A warmth that hadn't been there before. An awareness that made my wolf pace restlessly every time I tried to focus.

I forced myself to work. Updated patrol coordinates. Reviewed supply manifests. Drafted the final terms for the Omega housing standards. My handwriting stayed steady. My thoughts did not.

Around noon, something brushed against my mind. Light. Tentative.

*The oak near the eastern checkpoint is older than it looks. Check the growth rings if you get close. Worth seeing.*

Zain's voice through the mind-link. Quiet. Offering something small. Not asking for anything in return.

I stared at my map. The eastern checkpoint was marked in red. I had patrol reports from that zone. I did not need to see an oak tree.

I did not respond.

But I also did not block the link.

---

The next day, he appeared during a strategy session. Not physically—Marcus was running the meeting, going over the rogue pack movements in the southern corridor. But Zain stood at my shoulder, close enough that I could feel the heat of him even though he said nothing. His scent was faint but present. Cedar and storm.

My wolf stirred. I kept my eyes on the map.

Marcus was mid-sentence when Zain leaned forward slightly and tapped a section of the map I'd been studying. "This ridge," he said quietly. "You're right. It's vulnerable. Extend the patrol zone here."

Marcus blinked. Adjusted his notes. I felt Zain's gaze on the side of my face, but I didn't turn. I nodded once. Professional. Controlled.

When the meeting ended, Zain left without a word. But when I returned to my cabin that evening, there was a cup of coffee on my desk. Still hot. Made exactly the way I took it—black, one sugar, which I had mentioned once, weeks ago, in passing.

I stood there for a long moment, staring at the cup.

Then I drank it.

---

The report came from Nadia three days later.

"Audrey, you need to hear this." Her voice was tight. "Kara Wallace has been making the rounds at pack events. She's telling people she's Baylor's intended Luna. She's acting like the announcement was real."

I was reviewing the construction timeline when she called. I set down my pen. "Details."

"She was at the Crescent Ridge gala last night. Dropped Baylor's name at least a dozen times. Positioned herself at the head table. She's leveraging the ceremony announcement like it was an actual claiming." Nadia paused. "People are buying it. Or at least, they're pretending to."

I leaned back in my chair. Felt something cold and sharp settle in my chest. "Thank you. I'll handle it."

"Audrey—"

"I'll handle it," I repeated. My voice was calm. Flat. Final.

I hung up. Pulled out my contact list. Started making calls.

The first was to the hostess of the Crescent Ridge gala—a she-wolf named Helena who owed Moonveil a favor from a trade negotiation two years prior. I was polite. I was factual. I simply mentioned, in passing, that Baylor's announcement had been a manipulative tactic aimed at provoking his fated mate during a public event, and that Kara Wallace had been a willing participant in that manipulation. No Luna bond had been formed. No claiming had occurred.

Helena's tone shifted immediately. "I see. Thank you for clarifying, Audrey."

The second call was to an event coordinator in the northern territories. The third was to a pack elder's assistant. By the fifth call, I didn't need to explain. The story was already circulating. Kara Wallace, the she-wolf who let herself be used as a weapon. Kara Wallace, the opportunist who mistook a false announcement for real status.

I made seven calls in total. Then I set down my phone and returned to my construction timeline.

I did not feel satisfaction. I felt nothing at all.

---

The rain started just after midnight.

I was still awake, sitting at my desk with a cold cup of tea and a stack of reports I wasn't reading. The storm came in fast—wind rattling the cabin windows, rain drumming against the roof in heavy sheets. My wolf was restless. Pacing. I ignored her.

Then I heard it. A sound that didn't belong.

Pounding. Hard. Desperate.

Someone was at my door.

I stood slowly. Crossed the room. My hand hovered over the doorknob for one long moment. Then I opened it.

Baylor stood on my porch, drenched and shaking. Human form. Naked. His hair was plastered to his face, his eyes wild with something that looked like grief curdled past recognition. He was breathing hard. His hands were shaking.

"Audrey." My name came out broken. "Please. Please, I—"

I stood in the doorway. Rain blew past me, cold and sharp. I did not step aside.

"She left," he said. The words tumbled out in fragments. "My mother. She rejected the bond and she left. I was seven. I watched my father—an Alpha, Audrey, an *Alpha*—fall apart. I watched him beg. I swore I would never—" His voice cracked. "I had to know you wouldn't leave. I had to *know*. The tests, the she-wolves, all of it—I just needed to know you'd stay."

His Alpha tone tried to surface. It broke halfway through, producing a register that commanded nothing. Just desperation wrapped in dominance that no longer worked.

"Please," he whispered. "Reverse it. The rejection. Please. I can't—my wolf is dying, Audrey. I'm dying. Please."

I looked at him. This man who had been my fated mate. This Alpha who had spent six years testing whether I would break.

I felt nothing where the phantom pain used to be.

"You had six years," I said quietly. "I gave you six years. You chose this."

Baylor's face crumpled. He reached for me. "Audrey—"

Two figures emerged from the tree line. Marcus and Theo. They moved fast, grabbing Baylor by the arms and dragging him backward off the porch. He struggled. Shouted my name. They didn't stop. They hauled him across the clearing, through the rain, and disappeared into the forest.

I stood in the doorway for a long moment. Rain blew against my face. I was cold. Wet. My wolf was quiet.

I closed the door. Locked it. Stood with my back against the wood in the dark.

Then I reached for the mind-link.

Zain answered immediately. I felt his attention snap to me like a light turning on.

I didn't speak for a long moment. Neither did he. He just waited.

Finally, I said it. Quiet. Certain.

*I'm ready.*

Silence. Brief. Charged. Then his voice came through, low and rough and carrying a weight that made my wolf surge forward.

*I'm on my way.*
