Chapter 2

Monday morning. The office hummed with the usual energy—keyboards clicking, phones ringing, the smell of fresh coffee drifting through the open-plan floor. I kept my head down at my desk, working through the logistics merger files I'd spent four months building from scratch. Numbers don't lie. People do.

I heard it before I saw it.

A sharp, theatrical scream from the break room. Then Jocelyn's voice, cracking on cue. "She threw it at me! She just—she threw the coffee at me!"

I set down my pen.

When I walked in, Jocelyn was crumpled against the counter, her white blouse soaked through with espresso, her face a perfect portrait of shock and pain. She was shaking. Actually shaking. I almost believed it myself.

Almost.

I had been the only other person in that break room thirty seconds ago. I'd watched her lift the cup. I'd watched her tip it.

Logan came in fast, his face already set in stone. He didn't ask me anything. He looked at Jocelyn's soaked shirt, then at me, and something cold moved behind his eyes.

"Get out," he said.

"Logan—"

"Out. Now."

He said it loud enough for the whole floor to hear. And the floor was listening. Heads lifted from monitors. Chairs swiveled. Twenty-something pairs of eyes watched me walk back to my desk while Logan crouched beside Jocelyn, his hand on her back, his voice dropping into something soft and private.

He came for me ten minutes later. He didn't bother with a conference room.

"You're unhinged," he said, standing over my desk. His voice carried. He wanted it to. "Throwing coffee at a colleague because you can't handle being irrelevant? That's pathetic, Olivia. Even for you."

Someone near the window coughed. No one spoke up.

I looked at him. Just looked. My hands stayed flat on the desk.

"Your system access is suspended," he said. "IT will be by in an hour."

He walked away. I sat there, breathing slowly, feeling the stares like small burns across my skin.

I did not cry. Not there.

---

The penthouse was quiet when I got home. I changed out of my work clothes, made tea I didn't drink, and sat at the small writing desk by the window.

I pulled out a sheet of letterhead.

I wrote the resignation letter slowly, deliberately, like I was signing a contract with myself rather than walking away from one. Every line was clean. Professional. No anger, no accusations. Just the facts: my role, my notice period, my final date.

I signed it with a steady hand.

Then I folded it, slid it into an envelope, and placed it in the bedside drawer next to the mason jar.

Not yet. But soon.

I reached into the velvet pouch and closed my fingers around a pebble. Smooth. Cool. Heavier than it looked.

I dropped it into the jar.

Two more to go.

---

The email came three days later. An internal forward from someone in the legal department who still had a conscience, or maybe just poor judgment about forwarding chains. Either way, it landed in my inbox at 7:14 in the morning.

I read it twice. Then a third time.

Jocelyn had sent a communication to Hargrove Logistics—our merger partner, the deal I'd spent four months building—under my name. My signature block, my email format, my language. But not my words. She'd told them we were withdrawing from the agreement due to internal restructuring. Formal. Convincing. Final.

Hargrove had pulled out within the week. I'd assumed it was cold feet. I'd spent three weeks trying to understand what I'd done wrong.

I printed the email chain. I printed the original correspondence. I put it all in a folder and walked into Logan's office without knocking.

He looked up from his phone, annoyed.

I set the folder on his desk. "Jocelyn sent a fraudulent withdrawal notice to Hargrove Logistics using my credentials. That's why the merger collapsed. Here's the proof."

He opened the folder. He read it. I watched his jaw tighten.

For one moment, I thought—

"You clearly can't manage your own accounts if someone else can send from them," he said. He closed the folder and pushed it back toward me. "I'm transferring your remaining project responsibilities to Jocelyn. She'll take point on any future partnerships."

"Logan."

"You're done here, Olivia. Operationally. Figure out what that means for you."

I picked up the folder. I walked out.

Back at my desk, I opened my bottom drawer and looked at the folder for a long moment. Then I filed it carefully. Every page. Every timestamp.

That evening, I went home and took the mason jar out of the drawer. I held it up to the light. The pebbles caught it, scattered it, threw tiny prisms across the ceiling.

One left.

Just one.

I set the jar back down gently. Outside, Manhattan glittered like it always did—indifferent, relentless, beautiful in a way that had nothing to do with me.

I was almost ready.
