My Mate Rejected Me While I Gave Birth

9 / 10.0
As her daughter takes her first breath, Luna's world collapses. Through the pack link, Brandon's ceremonial rejection reaches her—a cold, formal dismissal delivered by the Beta while she lies in the throes of childbirth. With the bond severed and her newborn's future uncertain, Luna must summon strength she never knew she had to survive a shattered love and rebuild a life from betrayal's ashes.

My Mate Rejected Me While I Gave Birth Chapter 1

My daughter was eleven minutes from being born when my mate rejected me.

I know it was eleven, because Miriam had just said it — "Eleven minutes, Luna, maybe less, you push when I say push" — and her hands were slick to the wrist with my blood, and the table under me had stopped being a table and become a shallow warm pool.

Then Declan's voice opened inside my skull.

Our Beta. Brandon's second. He'd carried mind-links for the pack since I was sixteen. I knew the texture of him the way you know a knock on your own front door.

*Luna. He's ordered me to relay.*

I remember thinking, relay what.

Then Brandon came through — not his living voice, but the flat ceremonial version of it, the one he used at border treaties, and behind it I could hear a hall full of breathing strangers. Silverfang warriors. Hundreds of miles east.

*"I, Brandon, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Blair, as my mate and Luna."*

The mark on my neck went cold first.

Not numb. Cold, like someone had pressed a coin of ice into the scar he'd left there three years ago. Then the cold went out of it, and what was left behind was nothing — a hollow, a door swinging shut on an empty room and no one on either side of it.

My wolf tried to stand up.

I felt her do it. Somewhere far down under the fog I'd lived in my whole life, she came up off her belly and she snarled, one raw note, and I thought *yes, good, go* —

And then she dropped. Not sleep. Not silence like a room without sound. Silence like a room that was never built.

"Blair." Miriam's face went out of focus. "Blair. Blair — she's crashing, get me the yarrow, GET ME THE YARROW—"

I went somewhere white and level.

I came back with both her hands driving down on my sternum and my mouth full of something bitter and green, and then I was pushing because a body will do that even when the woman inside it has been unplugged. Adley was born at some hour I couldn't name, into a room that smelled like copper and burnt herbs and a bond that had just been cut off at the root.

She screamed. Good. I wanted her loud.

Minutes later — I don't know how many — something else came down the dying thread.

Teeth.

Not mine. Not in me. I felt them sink through skin somewhere far away, and the warmth of a fresh mark came traveling backward along the last of our connection and settled in my chest like a blade slid between two ribs. That's what it felt like. Warmth going the wrong direction.

A mate-mark is supposed to be given, not echoed.

I lay in the soaked cot with my daughter shrieking against my arm and I understood it the way you understand a broken bone before the pain arrives.

He'd marked Kendall Moore.

Our bond hadn't been broken. It had been replaced.

---

He came home three days later.

I heard the cars first, then the pack's welcome-howl going up over the roof — and it was wrong, thin in places, like some of them couldn't find the note. Miriam stood between me and the door with a cloth in her hands and didn't move until his boots were in the hallway.

Brandon filled the doorway. Clean shirt. His jaw freshly shaved. And layered over his own scent, sitting on his skin in coats — her perfume, her sweat, her mark.

He didn't look at the bundle on my chest. Not once. Not even the flick of an eye a stranger would have given.

"Your title is stripped," he said. "Effective immediately. The pack has a Luna."

I said nothing.

"You can take Omega reassignment and stay. Or you go out the gate as a rogue tonight. Those are the terms." His shoulders squared and his chin dropped — that old tell of his, the one that looks like dominance and is actually a man bracing for a fight he isn't sure of. He'd been doing it since he was nineteen. I never told him.

I kept my eyes on him.

"Answer me." Alpha tone. It went through me like a hand on the back of my neck, and my arms shook, and the cot frame creaked under my grip.

I didn't give him the word he wanted.

Instead I said, quietly, "What time was it?"

He blinked. "What?"

"The vow." My voice came out steadier than my hands. "What time did you say it."

Something crossed his face — annoyance, mostly, the look of a man finding a settled matter still on the table. "Nine forty," he said. "Does it matter?"

"No," I said, and lowered my gaze.

He took that for surrender and left.

Nine forty. I put it in a room in my head and shut the door on it, along with the exact register of his voice, so I could take it out later whenever I needed it and hear it clean.

---

They moved us to the servant quarters that afternoon. One cot, one bulb, a window that didn't open.

That first night I nursed Adley with one arm and touched the hollow scar on my neck with my free hand — then took my fingers off it, deliberately, and pressed them flat against the cot frame instead.

Because here was the arithmetic.

Since my last dosed meal before labor, the fog I'd carried my whole life had been *thinning*. Smells sharper. Sounds layered. Three days of no food from Judith's kitchen and I could suddenly hear two wolves talking on the floor below.

That is not grief. That is a chemical clearing out.

So I didn't cry and I didn't plan a war. I made a list. Every supply inconsistency I'd seen in three years as Luna — the household account book Judith balanced by hand and let no one touch. The sealed crates that came in under "cleaning stock" and never reached the cleaning closet. The kitchen omega who plated my meals separately and wouldn't meet my eyes. I recited them in order until I had them all, and then I recited them again.

On my first morning as an Omega I pried up a loose floorboard beneath the cot and looked at the dark under it. Empty.

Not for long.

---

Three days into the assignment they had me scrubbing the great kitchen on my knees, Adley strapped to my chest in a sling.

My brush caught the baseboard behind the prep counter and the panel shifted. Something rolled.

A vial. Glass, pharmaceutical-grade, no label, a smear of residue dried inside it.

I lifted it to my face and breathed in.

And there it was — the thin bitter-metal note that had lived under every stew, every tea, every plate set in front of me in this house since I was a girl.

I didn't flinch. I didn't look up. I slid it into the cloth folds against Adley's back, and I finished the floor, all of it, every corner, and I wrung the water out grey and carried my bucket past two guards and up the servants' stair.

Under the loose board, the vial made a small dry sound settling into the dark.

One. I needed more.

Something moved in me then — low, faint, an ember catching in wet wood. Half a heartbeat of her. Then nothing again.

I noted it. Filed it beside the vial.

And through the thin floor I heard Judith Hale's voice in the corridor below, warm as buttered bread, talking to the kitchen omega.

"The new Luna's morning tray, dear. Same preparation I taught you for the last one. And bring me the account book — I'll balance it myself tonight."
