Chapter 4

Three years in, I stopped counting the days.

It happened without ceremony. One morning I reached for the small calendar I kept beside the bed—the one where I'd been marking off time since Milo was born, one careful line at a time—and I realized I hadn't touched it in weeks. The pen was where I'd left it. The dates had passed anyway.

I put the calendar in a drawer.

Milo was three years and two months old the morning Cassius took him out for a walk.

I wasn't there when it started. I was in the herb room off the main kitchen, sorting through a new shipment of dried root, and I heard the front door open and close, and then Petra came in with a cup of tea and said, mildly, "Your son has adopted the Prince."

I looked up.

"He walked out with him," she said. "Held his hand. Didn't ask."

I set down the root I was holding.

I did not go to the window. I made myself finish the sorting. I made myself drink the tea Petra had brought. But some quiet, watchful part of me was tracking them across the grounds without my permission—Milo's small determined steps, Cassius's shortened stride, the two of them moving through the frost-touched morning like they'd been doing it their whole lives.

They came back an hour later. Milo's cheeks were red. He was carrying a pinecone.

Cassius did not make a speech about it. He did not tell me what had happened or what it meant. He simply set Milo down inside the door, unwound the boy's scarf, and said, "Tomorrow, same time?"

Milo nodded like a man closing a business deal.

That evening I couldn't find them.

The main house was quiet. Petra had gone home. Milo had missed his bedtime by nearly an hour, which was unlike him and unlike Cassius, and I moved through the halls with the particular efficiency of a mother who has trained herself not to panic.

I found them in Cassius's study.

The door was half-open. The lamp on the desk was still on, throwing warm light across the rug. Cassius was on the floor—on the floor, in the clothes he'd been wearing at dinner—stretched out on his back with one arm bent behind his head. Milo was curled against his side. The carved wolf figurine Cassius had made for him on his first birthday was clutched in Milo's small fist, pressed against his chest like something he'd been protecting.

Both of them were asleep.

I stood in the doorway for a long time.

I didn't cry. I want to be clear about that. I have not cried since the night I let myself be devastated in the dark and finished with it by morning. What I did was stand very still and feel something inside me shift—not break, not heal, just move, the way a house settles on its foundation after years of pressure.

One of the walls I'd built to hold myself up had been quietly replaced.

I didn't know when it had happened. Weeks ago, maybe. Months. It had been happening slowly, in a thousand small choices Cassius had made and never announced. The pinecone in Milo's coat pocket. The training log where he still kept notes on my sparring, unchanged after three years. The way he said "tomorrow, same time" as though it were a fact rather than an offer.

I closed the door quietly. I left them there.

I went to bed and slept without dreaming about silver.

---

The next morning, over breakfast, Cassius told me what Marcus had reported from Nightshade.

The healer had made contact with Gemma. Blackmail—three vials of blood, demands for safe passage and money. Gemma had paid.

I listened without setting down my cup.

"He'll come back," I said.

"Yes."

"Let him."

Cassius nodded once. He knew what I meant. Feed the healer just enough anxiety to keep him reaching. Never enough to make him run. Keep the vials in motion, keep Gemma paying, keep the corrupt architecture of Nightshade shifting quietly beneath their feet while they believed nothing was moving.

I drank my coffee.

I thought about the vials.

My blood, cold-stored in a private unit somewhere in Nightshade territory, waiting. I had spent three years assuming the healer had destroyed them. Learning that he had not—learning that he had been sitting on them the whole time, holding them as insurance against a world that was slowly turning against him—did not make me angry.

It made me still.

The way a healer goes still when a diagnosis clarifies.

Across the table, Milo was carefully arranging pieces of cut fruit into a pattern on his plate. Cassius watched him for a moment, and something almost amused moved across his face, gone before I could catch it.

"He's going to be terrifying," Cassius said quietly.

"He already is."

Milo looked up at that and considered us both with his mother's stillness, then went back to his fruit.

I finished my coffee.

Outside, frost was melting off the grass in patches. Another spring coming. Another year folding itself into the plan.

I could feel it now—the shape of the ending, still distant, still unhurried, but real. Getting closer with every quiet morning.
