My Alpha Stepbrother’s Hate Hides Our Fated Bond Chapter 1
The final bell echoed through the stone corridors of the Lycan Academy, triggering a chaotic flood of students. Lockers slammed. Heavy boots pounded against the polished floors.
"Move it, half-breed." A sharp shoulder checked mine, sending me stumbling against a row of metal doors.
I ignored the sneer from the pureblood girl and clutched the leather-bound notebook tighter to my chest. Ethan's notes. I spent the entire History of Lycanthropy lecture organizing the pages, highlighting the pack lineages just the way he preferred. Ten years of living under the same roof, ten years of my mother being married to the Alpha of the Hale family, and I still operated like a servant trying to earn my keep.
I pushed off the lockers and scanned the sea of moving bodies.
There he was.
Ethan Hale stood a full head taller than anyone else in the corridor. His broad shoulders cut a path through the crowd without him even trying. Students naturally parted for him, bowing their heads, exposing their necks in quiet submission to the future Alpha.
"Ethan!" I called out, shoving past a group of laughing sophomores.
He didn't stop.
"Ethan, wait up!" I raised my voice, quickening my pace.
"Hey, Hale, your pathetic shadow is trailing you again," a tall guy named Jace yelled down the hall, pointing a thumb in my direction.
Ethan’s spine stiffened. He stopped dead in his tracks. The surrounding chatter instantly died down. The entire hallway went still, dozens of eyes shifting between the top wolf of the academy and the mixed-blood stepsister he despised.
I closed the distance, my fingers trembling as I held out the notebook. "I finished the annotations for the pack history exam. The treaty dates are marked in yellow."
Ethan didn't reach for the book. Instead, he twisted his torso, a violent, almost frantic dodge, as if my very presence infected the air around him.
His nostrils flared. A muscle feathered along his rigid jawline. For a fraction of a second, his pupils swallowed the icy blue of his irises, turning his eyes entirely black. His chest heaved with a sudden, violent intake of air.
Then, the mask slammed back into place—pure, unadulterated disgust.
"Did I ask for this?" His voice rumbled low, vibrating against the metal lockers and rattling my bones.
"No," I whispered, shrinking under his glare. "But you missed the first half of the lecture. Your father wants you to pass the council exam."
"Do not bring my father into this." He took another step back, creating a wide gulf between us. "And don't pretend you know anything about what I need."
"I just wanted to help," I said, my voice cracking under the weight of his stare.
"Help?" Ethan let out a harsh, humorless laugh. He gestured to the crowd forming a tight circle around us. "You want to help? Stop following me around like a lost stray. Stop acting like we share blood. We don't."
I swallowed hard. The words stung, slicing through the fragile hope I tried to rebuild every single morning. "We live in the same house, Ethan. We are family."
"That was my father's mistake," he snapped, his fangs elongating just enough to catch the fluorescent light. "Not mine."
A girl with sleek blonde hair stepped out from the crowd, crossing her arms. "God, she is so desperate. Imagine thinking an Alpha would want a mutt carrying his books."
"Right? Total embarrassment," Jace chimed in, stepping closer to Ethan. "Careful, Alpha. If you take her notes, she might think you actually want her around."
A terrifying, guttural growl ripped from Ethan’s chest.
The sound was so loud, so violently aggressive, that Jace stumbled backward, his face draining of color. I flinched, pulling the notebook flush against my ribs. Ethan was furious. The mere suggestion of wanting me around drove him to the edge of shifting.
I kept my eyes glued to the floor, refusing to let the tears fall in front of half the school. "I'll just leave the notes on your desk at home."
"Throw them away," Ethan commanded, his tone dropping to a dangerous, lethal octave.
I looked up, meeting his cold gaze. "Ethan—"
"If I see you trailing me again, Lila, I'll have academy security escort you off campus. Do you understand me?"
"You wouldn't do that."
"Try me." He leaned in slightly.
His scent—crushed pine and winter frost—hit me like a physical blow. It was overwhelming, suffocatingly thick, and spiked with a heavy, burning spice that made my own wolf whimper in confusion.
"You are a stain on the Hale name," Ethan said, every word dripping with venom. "Keep your distance. Tell people you don't know me. Because every time you open your mouth, every time you step into my space, you humiliate us both."
My lungs froze. Air trapped in my throat.
"Got it?" he demanded.
"I understand," I choked out.
"Good."
He spun on his heel. The crowd parted for him instantly, clearing a wide path toward the exit.
I stood paralyzed in the center of the corridor. The leather notebook felt like a block of lead in my hands. Ten years of trying to be a good sister, ten years of hoping he would look at me with anything other than revulsion, all shattered on the academy floor.
"Pathetic," the blonde girl whispered as she walked past. She intentionally bumped my shoulder, knocking the book from my grip.
It hit the floor with a loud smack. Loose papers scattered across the tiles.
Laughter erupted around me. Students stepped over the notes, a few kicking the pages aside as they hurried to their next classes. I crouched down, my vision blurring as I gathered the ruined paper.
He hates me. He truly, deeply hates me.
My fingers brushed against a crumpled page, and I paused, glancing down the long corridor one last time.
Ethan stood at the far exit doors. He wasn't looking at the elite students flocking around him. He wasn't talking to Jace.
He was looking back at me over his shoulder.
His chest rose and fell in rapid, ragged intervals. His hands were balled into tight fists at his sides, his knuckles entirely white. The thick metal push-bar of the exit door beneath his left hand was completely crushed, bent inward under the sheer, terrifying force of his grip.
Before I could process the destruction, he shoved the broken door open and disappeared into the daylight.
