Chapter 5

Milo was already in bed when I sat down beside him, his small body tucked under the quilt, the carved wolf figurine pressed against his chest the way it always was at night. I'd been rehearsing what to say for three days. In the end, I kept it simple.

"We're going on a trip tomorrow," I said. "It's going to be complicated. Cass will be there. And I need you to just be exactly who you already are."

He considered this with the particular gravity he reserved for information that mattered. Not nodding, not rushing to respond. Just thinking.

Then he said: "Will the man with the wrong smell be there?"

I went completely still.

Milo had never been told about Asher. Not his name. Not what he was. Not what he'd done. I had given Milo exactly one explanation for the shape of our family, and it was the only one I believed: the Moon Goddess had a different plan.

"What do you mean," I said carefully, "the wrong smell?"

Milo looked at the ceiling. "Sometimes when Cass's people talk quietly, I can smell something that smells like me. But wrong." He paused. "Like something broken."

The air went out of the room.

I reached out and held his face in both my hands. He let me. He looked back at me with those dark, steady eyes—my eyes, in a face that carried things I tried not to look at directly.

"Yes," I said. "He'll be there."

Milo nodded once. "Okay," he said, and turned over onto his side.

I sat with my hand on his back until his breathing slowed and steadied and deepened into sleep. The room was quiet. The wolf figurine was still clutched in his fist.

I sat there for a long time after he didn't need me anymore.

My jaw was set. My hands were steady. The plan that had been building for five years—patient and precise and architectural, every piece placed with a healer's care—was fully crystallized now. Not sharpened. It had been sharp for months. But something in Milo's words had sealed it. Like something broken. A five-year-old had described Asher Peterson in four words, and not one of them was wrong.

I pressed one last kiss to the back of his head and stood up.

Tomorrow, we left.

---

Nightshade smelled the same.

That was the first thing I registered when the convoy crossed the border. The same pine and cold earth and wolf-musk layered over years of hierarchy. My body remembered it before my mind did—a low, involuntary tension moving through my shoulders, my wolf pressing briefly against my ribs before I held her still.

The suppressants were doing their job. My aura was sealed. My scent was muted to something generic, clinical, the smell of a healer's kit and nothing more. I had been Dr. Alice for five years. I knew how to wear her.

I took Cassius's arm and walked into the banquet hall.

Three hundred wolves, every Alpha of the southern alliance and their delegations, the long tables lit with warm light, conversation layered over the clink of glasses. I catalogued the room in the first ten seconds the way I always did—by scent, by posture, by the invisible architecture of who deferred to whom.

Asher was at the head table.

I had known he would be. I had prepared for it. I had stood in front of a mirror three days ago and practiced looking at a point in the middle distance with exactly nothing on my face.

He was mid-toast when I walked in. Standing, glass raised, the practiced ease of an Alpha performing authority for an audience. His Beta Roland Voss sat two seats to his left, watching the room with the careful attention of a man who had been running things quietly for longer than anyone had formally acknowledged.

I watched Asher's hand stop.

Not a flinch. Not a visible reaction. Just—a stop. The glass held mid-air, the sentence unfinished, his body going completely still in the way I remembered. The cornered-animal stillness.

His eyes found me across the hall.

I met his gaze.

I gave him nothing. Not recognition, not contempt, not the satisfaction of a flicker. The polished blankness of a stranger reading a patient's name off a list for the first time. I held it for exactly two seconds.

Then I turned my back and took Cassius's arm more firmly, leaning slightly toward him to say something low and unremarkable about the seating arrangement.

Behind me, I heard the sharp crack of breaking glass.

The murmuring started immediately—three hundred wolves turning toward the head table, toward their host Alpha standing with blood welling from his palm and a shattered wine glass at his feet, his face a mask with something terrible moving underneath it.

I did not turn around.
