Chapter 2

The private medical suite had been Lacey's playroom once. Now it had a hospital bed in it, and a monitor that beeped in soft, even pulses, and a window with the blinds drawn halfway so the morning light fell in stripes across the floor.

I'd called Dr. Whitfield myself, at eleven at night, and he'd flown in on the first thing smoking. He was the best spinal specialist on the East Coast. I'd used his services twice before, for two different board members' children, and both times he'd been careful and quiet and exact. I needed exact. I didn't need comfort.

He examined Lacey with gloved hands, gentle pressure along her spine, asking her to tell him where it hurt. She answered him in that same soft, hedging voice she'd used with me. Fine. Just sore there. A little numb, maybe.

I watched his face the whole time.

He was good. He kept his expression smooth, professional, unreadable to anyone who didn't know what to look for. But I've spent thirty years reading faces across boardroom tables, and I know exactly what a lie looks like when it's dressed up as a diagnosis. I saw the flicker when his fingers found the fracture line at L2. I saw him go still for half a second too long.

"I'd like to review the imaging in more detail," he said. "Give me a moment."

He stepped out. I followed him with my eyes until the door clicked shut, and then I didn't move.

I sat down on the edge of the bed and took Lacey's hand. It was still cold. I didn't say anything. I'd learned a long time ago that silence gets more truth out of people than questions do, but that wasn't why I stayed quiet. I stayed quiet because I didn't trust my own voice not to shake.

Lacey stared at the ceiling. She pressed her fingertips together, one hand over the other, like she was holding herself in place.

"Mom," she said finally. "You don't have to look at me like that."

"Like what, baby."

"Like I'm broken."

I held her hand a little tighter. I didn't answer that either. Because I was looking at her exactly like that, and we both knew it, and there wasn't a version of the truth that would make it easier to hear.

---

Margaret was waiting for me in the study when Dr. Whitfield finally gave me his findings — an hour of careful, clinical language that boiled down to one sentence I couldn't shake: *this fracture pattern isn't consistent with a fall down a staircase. It's consistent with a fall that was helped.*

I thanked him. I told him to keep that opinion to himself for now. Then I went to find Margaret.

She was sitting very straight in the chair across from my desk, hands folded over something in her lap. A notebook. Plain, spiral-bound, the kind you'd buy at a drugstore for grocery lists.

"I keep the household schedule in here," she said. "Staff shifts. Deliveries. It's not my place to keep anything else. But I did."

She slid it across the desk.

I opened it.

The handwriting was small and neat, dated in the corner of every entry, the way she'd have logged linen deliveries or grocery orders. Except these weren't about linens.

*March 3 — Mr. Carr changed the lock on Miss Lacey's medication cabinet. Told me it was for her safety. Did not give me the new code.*

*March 9 — Ms. Wood dismissed downstairs staff two hours early. Told them Miss Lacey wanted quiet. Miss Lacey was asleep by 8.*

*March 14 — Overheard Mr. Carr on the phone in the east hall. Could not hear all of it. Heard the word "trust" three times.*

I turned the page. My hands were steady. I made sure of that.

*April 2 — Loud argument on the upper landing, 7:14 a.m. Miss Lacey — no sound after.*

I read that line twice.

I read it a third time, actually, though I told myself I only read it twice.

The rest of the entry was blank. No follow-up note. No explanation. Just the fact of it, laid out the way Margaret laid out everything — plain, dated, unembellished — because she had understood, even then, that someday someone would need it exactly like this. Unadorned. Undeniable.

"Why didn't you call me," I said. It wasn't really a question.

"I tried, Mrs. Collins. Twice. Mr. Carr intercepted the calls both times. He told me he'd handle it, that you were not to be disturbed during the summit." Margaret's voice didn't waver, but her hands, folded in her lap, had gone white at the knuckles. "I started writing things down after that. I didn't know what else to do."

I closed the notebook.

I didn't say thank you. Thank you felt too small for what she'd handed me — eleven years of quiet loyalty, condensed into dates and times, into the one thing that might actually hold up in a courtroom.

"You did exactly the right thing," I said instead.

I set the notebook on the desk in front of me, squared it with the edge of the blotter, and pressed my palm flat against the cover for a moment. Then I picked it up and put it in the drawer I kept locked.

Somewhere upstairs, my daughter was staring at a ceiling, pressing her fingertips together, trying to hold herself in one piece.

I was done grieving quietly. Now I needed proof.
