Chapter 3

I was in the upstairs hallway when I heard him behind me.

"Alora."

His voice was soft. Careful. The voice he used in boardrooms when he needed someone to believe him.

I stopped walking. I didn't turn around.

"Please." His footsteps came closer. "Just — please. Let me explain."

I turned then. Slowly.

Donovan Carr looked the way he always looked when he needed something from me — open face, shoulders slightly dropped, eyes carrying just enough pain to seem genuine. His hand was pressed flat against his chest. The red mark from my palm had faded to a dull flush along his cheekbone. He'd straightened his jacket. Of course he had.

"It was an accident." His voice broke on the last word. Clean break, right on cue. "I know how it looks. I know you're angry. But I love her, Alora. I love Lacey. You know that. You've always known that."

He kept going. The staircase. The panic. How he'd called the doctor immediately. How Lylah had only been there to help. How he'd been out of his mind with worry. How he would never — how he could never —

I let him talk.

I watched his hands. The left one pressed to his chest. The right one — there it was — moving to adjust the watch on his wrist. The one I'd given him four years ago, at Christmas, because Lacey had picked it out herself and wrapped it in silver paper and cried a little when he opened it.

He was still talking.

I waited until he ran out of words. Until the silence stretched long enough that he had to fill it with my name again.

"Alora. Your judgment — it's always been my guiding star. You know me better than anyone. You know I'm not —"

"I know exactly what you are, Donovan."

My voice came out quiet. Almost pleasant.

"I built you. I know every seam."

His mouth stayed open for a half second. Nothing came out.

I walked past him.

I didn't look back. But I heard it — the small, involuntary sound he made. Not grief. Not guilt. Something thinner than both. Something that lived underneath all that performance, in the place where a real person would have kept their conscience.

Fear.

Good.

---

The study was dark except for the lamp on my desk. I didn't turn on the overheads. I sat down, pulled my phone from my jacket pocket, and called Chase.

It rang twice.

"Alora." Just my name. But the way he said it — the specific weight of it — told me he'd been waiting.

"I'm home," I said.

"I know. Margaret called me this morning. She couldn't reach you — you were already in the air." A pause. "Tell me."

So I told him.

I told him the way I tell him everything — in order, without editorializing, because Chase has never needed me to translate. I told him about Margaret's phone call. About the hedgerows and the gravel and how normal the estate looked from the outside. About the east sitting room. About the wheelchair.

About the marriage certificate with Lacey's name printed next to Jeffrey Larson's.

About the slap — I told him that plainly, and he said nothing, and his silence meant he would have done the same.

About Dr. Whitfield's findings. About Margaret's notebook. About the entry dated April 2nd.

I told him all of it in the same steady voice I use in depositions and negotiations and every room where I cannot afford to be anything other than controlled.

And then I said: "When I came through the door, she looked up at me, and her eyes —"

I stopped.

Three seconds. Maybe four.

The lamp on my desk hummed. Outside, the Hamptons night was very still.

"Alora." His voice was low. Steady. An anchor dropped into deep water.

"She looked like she'd stopped expecting anyone to come," I said.

The silence on the line was different after that. Not empty. Full of something that didn't need words.

"I'm coming home," Chase said.

"You have the Meridian closing on Thursday —"

"I'm coming home."

I pressed my fingers flat against the desk. I breathed.

"Okay," I said.

We stayed on the line for another minute without speaking. I listened to the faint sound of Paris through his window — traffic, a siren somewhere far off. He listened to whatever silence sounds like in a house where something terrible has happened and the person responsible is still sleeping down the hall.

Then Chase said, quietly: "Don't do anything without me."

"I won't," I said.

We both knew that wasn't entirely true. But he said it anyway, because that's what we do — we give each other the dignity of the promise, even when we both know the other one is already three moves ahead.

I hung up. I sat in the dark for a moment.

Upstairs, somewhere, my daughter was pressing her fingertips together, trying to hold herself in one piece.

I opened my laptop.

I had work to do.
