Chapter 1

The banquet hall of the St. Regis was already glowing with crystal chandeliers and white orchids when I arrived forty minutes early.

I stopped by the service station near the kitchen doors, pulling my seat card from my purse to show the banquet captain. On the back, written in thick red ink, were the words: *SEVERE SHELLFISH ALLERGY — TABLE 4.*

"We have it noted in the system, Miss Reed," the captain said with a reassuring smile. "The kitchen prepared a dedicated poultry course for your seat. Clean prep station, separate cookware, no cross-contamination."

"Thank you," I said, letting out a quiet breath. "I really appreciate it."

Across the room, my older brother Ethan stood by the head table in a tailored charcoal suit. He was laughing, leaning down to pour champagne for his fiancée, Claire, while her parents chatted animatedly beside them. Ethan looked happier and more relaxed than I had seen him in years.

I didn't want to interrupt his moment. Walking over to the main table, I quietly set down the small, velvet-wrapped box containing his engagement gift—our late father’s restored vintage watch—beside his place card.

Chloe, Claire's younger sister, was already seated directly to Ethan's right. She smoothed her silk dress, glancing up at me with a sweet, pitying tilt of her head.

"Ethan thought it was better for family harmony if you sat at table four, Nat," Chloe said, keeping her voice light. "You don't mind, do you?"

"No," I replied evenly, setting my clutch against the leg of Ethan’s chair before stepping back. "It's his night."

If keeping my distance meant Ethan could have a flawless engagement dinner without tension, I was willing to sit wherever he wanted. Tonight was about him. Once the toasts were finished, I planned to leave quietly.

I walked over to Table 4 near the back corner and took my seat.

Ten minutes before the first course was served, Chloe stood up from the head table. She made a show of helping the event coordinator straighten the silver place card holders, moving gracefully from table to table with a bright smile. She paused at my table for a brief second to adjust the centerpiece, her sleeve brushing past my water goblet before she drifted back to the front.

I didn't think anything of it.

When the servers emerged from the kitchen doors carrying silver trays, a bowl of thick, velvety soup was placed in front of me. It smelled rich, fragrant with herbs and roasted garlic.

I picked up my spoon and took a small taste.

The first note was creamy and savory, but underneath it lay an unmistakable, sweet brininess.

A cold shock ran down my spine.

Within three seconds, a sharp heat flared across the roof of my mouth. My lower lip went completely numb, swelling against my teeth. The back of my throat tightened as if an invisible fist had closed around my windpipe.

*Shellfish.*

I dropped the spoon. It clattered loudly against the porcelain rim, splashing cream across the white tablecloth.

I looked down at the seat card propped against my water glass. It was pristine white, completely blank on the back.

It wasn't my card. Someone had moved it.

Panic surged through me as my chest locked up. My airway was narrowing with terrifying speed, every shallow inhalation whistling in my throat.

My EpiPen was inside my black clutch.

And my clutch was still sitting beside Ethan’s chair at the head table, where I had left it.

I shoved my chair back and stood up. My knees wobbled, the room tilting around the edges of my vision. I stumbled across the polished floor, pressing one hand hard against my sternum as I fought for a single lungful of air.

Ethan was standing with a flute of champagne in his hand, smiling at something Claire’s father had just said.

I reached him and grabbed his forearm, my fingers digging into the wool of his jacket.

"Ethan..." My voice came out as a broken, sandpaper scrape. "My bag. I need... my pen."

Ethan turned, his smile instantly vanishing into an irritated frown. "Nat, what are you doing?"

Before I could point toward the chair behind him, Chloe leaned in close, her eyes wide with exaggerated distress.

"Nat, please," Chloe said softly, loud enough for Claire’s parents to hear. "I know you were unhappy about sitting at table four, but can't we just get through the toasts? Is this really because everyone's looking at Claire tonight?"

Claire paused, her glass halfway to her lips, while her mother’s expression chilled into obvious disapproval.

Ethan’s neck flushed red. He looked at the surrounding tables, where several guests were already glancing over at the commotion.

"Stop it, Natalie," Ethan muttered under his breath, his voice hard and dismissive. "Not tonight. Don't start this again."

"No..." I gasped, my throat swelling shut so fast that no sound came out except a strangled wheeze. Darkness crept at the edges of my sight.

I lifted a shaking hand, pointing desperately at the black leather clutch resting against the leg of his chair.

*The pen. Just grab the bag.*

Ethan looked at my outstretched hand, then back at my face. To him, my trembling and gasping were just another dramatic escalation, another attempt to hijack the spotlight from his future in-laws.

"You're embarrassing yourself," Ethan said coldly, pulling his arm out of my grasp. He turned toward a nearby banquet server who was hovering awkwardly by the pillar. "Excuse me. Can you take my sister somewhere quiet until she calms down?"

"Sir?" the server asked, uncertain.

"Take her into the side lounge," Ethan ordered, not even looking at me. "Give her some water."

The young server stepped forward, taking my elbow with polite firmness. "This way, ma'am. Let's step outside for a moment."

I tried to plant my feet, but my oxygen-starved muscles gave out. I pointed frantically back toward the head table, my mouth moving in silent, agonized pleas. *My bag. In the bag.*

The server simply guided me through the double doors leading into the private glass-walled anteroom beside the main hall.

"Just sit down and rest, miss," the server said gently, clearly assuming I was merely having an emotional breakdown. "I'll fetch a glass of ice water."

The heavy door clicked shut, leaving me alone in the small room.

My lungs burned as if filled with broken glass. I collapsed against the interior glass wall, sliding halfway down the smooth pane. Through the transparent partition, the entire ballroom remained brightly lit, filled with soft classical music and the clinking of crystal glasses.

Summoning the last ounce of strength in my body, I raised both palms and slammed them hard against the glass.

*Bang. Bang.*

The dull thuds cut through the quiet corner of the hall. Several guests at Table 2 turned in surprise.

Ethan froze mid-sentence. He turned his head and saw me through the glass, slumped against the wall with my palms flat against the pane.

His jaw set into a line of absolute fury. He set his champagne glass on the table and strode toward the anteroom with long, furious steps.

A faint spark of hope flared in my chest. *He's coming. He's finally going to look.*

I pressed my face closer to the glass, fighting to keep my eyes open, my blue-tinged lips parted in a desperate, soundless cry for help.

Ethan reached the exterior of the glass wall.

He didn't reach for the door handle.

His eyes met mine through the glass, cold and full of disgust. He reached up, grasped the heavy velvet privacy curtain hanging on the exterior track, and dragged it firmly across the glass pane.

The dark fabric swept shut with a muffled rustle, cutting off the light.

The last thing I saw before the darkness swallowed the room was my brother turning his back on me and walking away into the glowing hall.
