Chapter 2

Darkness swallowed the small room the moment the heavy velvet curtain fell into place.

On the other side of the glass, the muffled sound of classical music and laughter continued, bright and completely undisturbed.

I fell to my knees on the hardwood floor, my hands clawing along the wall. My throat was swelling so fast that each shallow pull of air felt like swallowing crushed glass. I reached upward blindly, searching the wall for a service intercom or a house phone.

My numb fingers grazed the edge of an empty wooden credenza. There was no phone. Just a decorative ceramic lamp and a stack of event brochures.

I fumbled for my dress pocket before the brutal reality hit me. My phone was still sitting on Table 4 beside my untouched water glass. The only thing I had on me was my smartwatch.

I dragged myself toward the wooden door leading back to the ballroom. My chest burned with a suffocating, crushing pressure. I slammed my fist against the lower panel of the door, over and over, hoping someone on the banquet staff would hear.

*Bang. Bang. Bang.*

No one came. To the servers outside, my brother had already handled the situation. Ethan had labeled it a dramatic family squabble, and nobody wanted to interfere with the groom’s private business.

Next door, the music faded into a swell of polite applause.

The banquet emcee’s voice echoed clearly through the shared wall. "And now, a few words from our groom-to-be, Ethan Reed!"

A fresh wave of cheers rippled through the ballroom.

I gripped the brass door handle, trying to pull myself upright, but my legs gave out completely. I crashed onto my side, my cheek pressed against the cold floorboards.

"Thank you, everyone," Ethan’s voice resonated through the speakers, steady, warm, and full of pride. "Growing up, things were always turbulent. For a long time, I felt like I was carrying an endless amount of chaos on my shoulders. But when Claire walked into my life, everything changed."

I opened my mouth, desperate to scream his name.

"Eth... an..."

Nothing came out except a thin, wet rattle. The airway had constricted almost entirely. Dark spots danced across my vision like swarms of black flies.

"Claire gave me peace," Ethan continued, his voice thick with emotion. "She gave me a home where I finally feel safe. A place without manipulation. Without constant demands for attention."

The guests laughed softly in understanding.

Tears tracked down my temples into my hair. I clawed at the carpet, my fingernails bending back against the rough fibers.

A memory ripped through the fog in my brain.

I was eight years old, choking on hidden shellfish stock at a family diner. Ethan had been twenty-two. He had picked me up out of the booth, kicked the diner door open, and sprinted four blocks through freezing autumn rain to reach the clinic.

He had refused to let the nurses take me out of his arms until the epinephrine took effect.

*Look at me, Nat,* he had sobbed back then, pressing his wet forehead against mine. *Look at me. I'm right here. You're going to be okay.*

Now, he was fifty feet away, raising a glass to his new family while I suffocated in the dark.

I forced my trembling left arm up to my chest. The screen of my smartwatch lit up with a harsh blue glow.

I tapped the voice command icon with a shaking finger.

"Call... nine... one..." I choked out.

The screen blinked, displaying the text: *Audio not recognized. Please try again.*

The swelling in my vocal cords had distorted my voice into an unreadable rasp.

My vision began to tunnel, closing in around the tiny square screen. I couldn't breathe at all anymore. My lungs expanded against a wall of pure resistance, pulling in nothing.

With the last shreds of motor control left in my right hand, I opened the messaging app. My thumb twitched violently over the tiny digital keyboard, missing keys, correcting, fighting the darkness closing over my mind.

I managed to type a message to Ethan:

*I wasn't trying to ruin your night. I really couldn't breathe.*

My thumb hovered over the green send button.

A sudden spasm seized my chest. The world went black, my hand went limp, and the smartwatch slipped from my fingers, landing face-down on the dark rug before the message could transmit.

***

Five minutes later, the side service door swung open.

A young banquet server walked into the anteroom carrying a silver tray with a pitcher of ice water and a fresh cloth.

"Miss Reed? I brought you some—"

The server stopped dead.

The silver pitcher hit the floor with an explosive crash, sending ice cubes and water spraying across the hardwood.

Natalie lay motionless near the base of the curtained glass wall. Her lips were dark blue, her fingertips gray, and her eyes were half-open, staring blankly at nothing.

"Help!" the server shrieked, backing into the door frame. "Someone call 911! She's not breathing!"

Within seconds, the quiet anteroom erupted into chaos. Two senior banquet managers sprinted in, dropping to their knees beside her to check her airway and pulse while another staff member shouted frantic updates into a phone.

"Severe anaphylaxis! Table four guest! We need an advanced life support unit immediately!"

Because the main hotel entrance was completely clogged with limousines and arriving VIP vehicles, the paramedics rushed their gurney through the rear service entrance.

They burst into the anteroom with emergency kits, injecting a high dose of epinephrine straight through Natalie's dress into her thigh. A bag-valve mask was sealed over her blue face, pumping oxygen into her collapsed airway as they lifted her onto the narrow cot.

"Vitals are critical," the lead paramedic barked, securing the safety straps. "Pressure is bottoming out. Move, move, move!"

They wheeled the gurney rapidly down the narrow staff corridor, the wheels rattling violently against the industrial tile floor.

They pushed through the heavy metal loading bay doors into the cool night air. The waiting ambulance sat with its rear doors wide open, red and blue emergency lights washing over the brick alleyway.

Just as the paramedics hoisted the cot into the back of the vehicle, a thunderous boom echoed across the sky.

Above the hotel's private courtyard, brilliant showers of gold and crimson fireworks exploded into the night air.

On the second-floor terrace overlooking the garden, Ethan stood with his arm wrapped securely around Claire's waist. He was laughing, looking up at the glittering canopy of light while a hundred guests cheered and raised their crystal flutes in unison.

Near the stone railing of the terrace, Chloe stood holding a glass of sparkling cider.

She looked down over the balustrade, watching the flashing red and blue strobe lights of the ambulance in the rear alleyway. For a brief second, she watched the paramedics slam the vehicle's rear doors shut.

Her expression didn't change.

She turned away from the railing without a word, stepped back into the dining room, and smoothly reached out to push Natalie's empty chair beneath Table 4.

The siren wailed to life, screaming as the ambulance tore down the alley and vanished into the city traffic.

Inside the glowing ballroom, the applause swelled, and no one told Ethan that the girl fighting for her life in the back of the truck was his sister.
