Chapter 2

The cold marble floor pressed against my cheek as consciousness slowly returned. My body felt like it had been shattered and poorly reassembled, every breath sending sharp spikes of pain through my chest. The ballroom had emptied except for a few servants who swept around me as if I were just another piece of debris to be cleaned up.

"Get up." The voice was harsh, unfamiliar. I struggled to focus my vision and saw a tall man in pack guard uniform standing over me. "Alpha's orders. You're to be escorted out immediately."

Out? I tried to speak, but only a hoarse whisper emerged. "I need... medical attention. The baby..."

The guard's expression didn't change. "Not our concern anymore. You have ten minutes to gather your belongings."

Ten minutes. After months of sharing Ryker's bed, his dreams, his promises of forever – ten minutes to erase my existence from his life. I pressed my hand to my stomach, feeling for any sign of the life growing there. Everything felt wrong, cramped and painful, but I couldn't tell if it was from the severed mate bond or something worse.

Two female servants helped me to my feet, their touches clinical and distant. They'd served me breakfast just this morning, chatting about the weather and the upcoming ball. Now they avoided my eyes.

"Where will I go?" I asked the guard as he escorted me through the corridors I'd once walked freely. "It's the middle of winter. The storm—"

"Should have thought of that before you embarrassed the Alpha in front of his new mate," he replied coldly.

Embarrassed him? By bleeding on his marble floor when he ripped our bond apart? By having the audacity to exist when he'd decided to trade me for political advantage?

My room – former room – had been stripped bare. My personal belongings sat in a single bag by the door. Everything else, the gifts he'd given me, the clothes he'd bought, the books we'd read together, were gone. Erased as if our relationship had never existed.

The guard handed me a thin coat, clearly secondhand and far too large. "This is all you're authorized to take."

I stared at the threadbare wool, then at the window where snow whipped against the glass in horizontal sheets. The storm that had been brewing all day had intensified, turning the night into a white hell.

"You can't send me out in this," I said, my voice stronger now despite the pain. "No one can survive in a blizzard like this."

The guard's smile was cruel. "Alpha Ryker was very specific. You are no longer welcome on pack lands. The longer you delay, the worse the storm gets."

I pulled on the inadequate coat with shaking fingers. Each movement sent fresh waves of agony through my body, and I could taste blood again. The metallic tang made my stomach lurch, adding nausea to my growing list of symptoms.

The side door they led me to opened onto the service road that wound away from the main compound. Beyond it lay miles of wilderness before the nearest human settlement. In good weather, it was a challenging hike. In this storm, it was a death sentence.

"Wait," I turned back to the guard. "At least let me shift. I'll have a better chance as a wolf."

He shrugged. "Do what you want. Just do it off pack territory."

The door slammed shut behind me, and I was alone with the storm.

The wind hit me like a physical blow, driving ice crystals into my exposed skin like needles. The thin coat provided no protection against the arctic air that seemed determined to steal every breath from my lungs. Within minutes, I couldn't feel my fingers or toes.

I stumbled forward, trying to follow the barely visible road. The snow was already knee-deep and rising fast. Each step was a monumental effort, my legs sinking into the drifts and requiring tremendous energy to pull free.

After what felt like hours but was probably only minutes, I stopped and tried to shift. I closed my eyes, reaching for that familiar sensation of my wolf rising to the surface. In wolf form, I'd have thick fur, better endurance, heightened senses to navigate the storm.

Nothing happened.

I tried again, concentrating harder, calling to my wolf with desperate urgency. Still nothing. The pregnancy and trauma of the severed bond had left me too weak, too broken to access my other form.

Panic clawed at my throat. Without my wolf, I was just a human woman in inadequate clothing, pregnant and injured, facing down nature's fury with nothing but determination.

The cold was becoming unbearable. My teeth chattered so violently I bit my tongue, adding fresh blood to the taste already coating my mouth. My feet had gone completely numb, and I stumbled frequently, sometimes falling face-first into the snow.

I had to keep moving. Stopping meant death, and despite everything, I wasn't ready to die. Not when I might still be carrying Ryker's child. Not when that child was innocent of its father's cruelty.

But my body was failing. Each breath burned like fire in my lungs, and my heart hammered erratically. Hypothermia was setting in, I realized with detached medical clarity. Soon I'd become confused, then sleepy, then...

I fell again, this time unable to find the strength to rise. The snow around me was stained pink with blood – from my mouth, my nose, the cuts where ice had sliced my skin. My vision was growing dark around the edges.

Looking up at the storm-obscured sky, I whispered a prayer to the Moon Goddess who had supposedly blessed our kind.

"Please," I breathed into the howling wind. "If there's any mercy left in this world, if this child deserves a chance... help us."

The storm seemed to intensify in response, as if the goddess herself was laughing at my plea. Snow covered my legs, then my torso, nature already beginning to claim me.

My last coherent thought was of Ryker's face when he'd looked at me across that ballroom – cold, calculating, empty of any trace of the love I'd thought we shared.

Then the white darkness took me, and I knew nothing more.
