Chapter 3

The cold should have killed me by now. I was certain of it—my body had stopped shivering, stopped fighting, and that terrifying warmth of hypothermia had begun to spread through my limbs. The snow had become my shroud, and I'd made peace with dying here, forgotten and alone.

But something was wrong with this death.

Heat. Scorching, impossible heat against my frozen skin.

My eyelids felt like they were sealed with ice, but I forced them open, expecting to see the Moon Goddess or perhaps nothing at all. Instead, through the haze of snow and my failing vision, I saw a figure looming over me. Massive. Dark. Radiating warmth like a living furnace.

A hallucination, surely. My dying brain conjuring comfort in my final moments.

But then strong arms lifted me from my snowy grave, and the heat intensified. Real heat. Life-giving warmth that made my frozen nerve endings scream as blood began to flow again.

"Foolish girl," a deep voice rumbled above me, rough as gravel and edged with an accent I couldn't place. "What pack leaves their pregnant females to die in storms?"

Pregnant. He knew about the baby. Through my delirium, panic flared—was I bleeding? Could he smell it on me? But his touch remained gentle despite his harsh words, and something soft and warm enveloped my body.

Fur. Rich, thick fur that smelled of pine and something wilder, more dangerous. I tried to focus on the face above me, but my vision kept swimming. All I could make out were sharp cheekbones carved from granite and eyes like winter storms—pale, cold, but somehow burning.

"Please," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the howling wind. "Don't let me die. The baby..."

Those storm-gray eyes sharpened, and I felt his grip tighten around me. Not painfully, but with sudden intensity, as if my words had struck something deep.

"Who did this to you?" His voice carried a lethal quiet that made the storm itself seem tame. "What Alpha casts out his pregnant mate in winter?"

I tried to answer, but the words wouldn't come. Ryker's name felt like poison on my tongue, and speaking it would make this nightmare real. Instead, I let my eyes drift closed, surrendering to the warmth and the strange safety of these powerful arms.

"Stay awake," he commanded, and there was Alpha power in his voice—not the brutal force Ryker had used to shatter our bond, but something deeper, more primal. It compelled obedience without breaking. "Look at me."

I obeyed, meeting those pale eyes that seemed to see straight through me. Up close, I could make out more of his features—the strong jaw, the aristocratic nose, the way his dark hair was streaked with premature silver at the temples. Handsome in a harsh, unforgiving way, like a blade honed to perfection.

"What's your name?" he asked as he began moving through the storm with impossible grace, carrying me as if I weighed nothing.

"Elara," I managed.

"I am Kaelen." The name sent a chill through me that had nothing to do with the cold. "And you, little wolf, are very far from home."

Kaelen. I knew that name, whispered in terrified tones around pack fires. The King of Ice. The Northern Wolf Lord who ruled the harshest territories with an iron fist. They said he was more beast than man, that he killed for pleasure and showed mercy to none.

Yet here he was, saving me.

"Why?" The question slipped out before I could stop it.

"Why what?" His pace never faltered, even as the wind tried to tear us both apart.

"Why help me? The stories... they say you're..."

"A monster?" There was dark amusement in his voice. "Perhaps. But even monsters have rules, and leaving pregnant females to die in storms violates the oldest laws of our kind."

I felt myself being carried into shelter—the sudden absence of wind and snow was shocking. My eyes had adjusted enough to make out rough stone walls and the dancing shadows cast by a fire. A cave, I realized. Warm and dry and impossibly welcoming after the hellish cold outside.

Kaelen set me down gently on thick furs near the fire, his movements careful and controlled. In the flickering light, I could finally see him clearly, and my breath caught.

He was magnificent and terrifying in equal measure. Tall enough that he had to duck slightly under the cave's ceiling, with shoulders that spoke of raw power barely contained. His clothes were simple but well-made—dark leather and wool that emphasized rather than hid his dangerous grace. But it was his eyes that held me captive. Storm-gray and ancient, as if they'd seen too much of the world's cruelty.

"You're bleeding," he observed, crouching beside me with fluid precision.

I touched my lips, feeling the dried blood there. "The bond," I whispered. "When he severed it..."

Something shifted in Kaelen's expression. The temperature in the cave seemed to drop despite the roaring fire, and I caught a glimpse of the monster the stories spoke of.

"He severed a mate bond?" Each word was carefully enunciated, as if he was holding back a larger fury. "While you were pregnant?"

I nodded, unable to speak past the fresh wave of pain that memory brought.

Kaelen was silent for a long moment, staring into the fire with an expression that promised violence. When he finally spoke, his voice was soft as silk and twice as dangerous.

"Tell me his name."

The command wrapped around me like invisible chains, compelling truth. But even as my lips parted to obey, some instinct warned me that speaking Ryker's name would set something in motion that couldn't be undone.

"I can't," I whispered.

Those pale eyes fixed on me again, studying my face with unnerving intensity. "Can't, or won't?"

"Both."

To my surprise, he nodded as if he understood. "Rest," he said, pulling another fur over me. "We'll discuss your future when you're stronger."

As exhaustion pulled me toward unconsciousness, I watched him move about the cave with predatory grace, tending the fire, checking supplies. The King of Ice, the monster of the North, caring for a broken stranger and her unborn child.

Just before sleep claimed me, I saw him pause and look back at me, his expression unreadable in the firelight. But there was something in his eyes—a flicker of recognition, perhaps, or a promise of retribution that made my blood run cold even as his furs kept me warm.

I closed my eyes and let the darkness take me, wondering if I'd traded one dangerous Alpha for another, and whether my child would survive either way.
