Chapter 11

The castle halls echoed with low murmurs and hurried footsteps. News of the Crimson Rose's reawakening had traveled faster than fire across dry parchment. Everyone wanted to know who the flame had chosen. Seraphina felt their stares as she walked beside Cassian, cloaked and quiet, her presence stirring something unspoken in the air.

They had returned to Elysara's capital in secrecy, hiding within the shadows of its high marble walls. The council, still divided, hadn't summoned them yet but their arrival was bound to spark unrest.

Cassian guided her through the servants' corridors toward the old war chamber, a place long forgotten except by those who remembered the cost of the last magical uprising. His jaw was clenched, his hand never far from his sword. He hadn't spoken much since their arrival.

"You've barely looked at me," Seraphina said softly as they entered the dusty chamber. "You've barely said anything at all."

He closed the door behind them, shoulders tense. "Because I don't know what to say, Seraphina . You lit up the battlefield. You summoned fire from the air and bled gold light. And I..." He hesitated. "I should've feared you. But I didn't."

Seraphina  stepped closer. "You don't have to." "

I'm a knight of the realm," he whispered. "I swore an oath to uphold its laws. Magic like yours... it's supposed to be treason."

"Then break the oath" she said, voice trembling. "Because I'd rather stand with someone who protects me than a thousand who fear me."

The tension between them finally cracked, not with words, but with silence. Cassian reached for her hand slowly, his calloused fingers brushing her wrist.

Before either could speak further, the chamber door burst open.

"By order of the High Council, you are both summoned immediately," a guard announced. "The Queen demands your presence."

The great hall of Elysara burned with silent tension. Though the fires had been doused and the magic sealed for now, the embers of unease remained. Seraphina  stood still, her hand still faintly pulsing with the remnants of the Crimson Rose's energy. Beside her, Cassian's expression was unreadable as the Queen's herald announced:

"Her Majesty, Queen Maelira, demands the immediate presence of Seraphina Rivenhart and Lord Cassian Vale by royal order."

The guards surrounded them swiftly, though not aggressively. It wasn't an arrest it was a summons. A warning cloaked in formality. Cassian exchanged a glance with Seraphina . "Let's not keep her waiting."

They were led through the tall, echoing corridors of the inner keep, lit now with solemn torches and guarded by silent sentinels. Elysara  had always felt cold, but tonight it felt hollow stripped of its dignity, cracked open by truths too long buried.

The royal chambers had transformed into a war  room.

Queen Maelira stood by the high window, her crimson robes spilling behind her like a pool of blood. The moonlight framed her silver hair, making her look both ethereal and severe. Behind her, maps of the realm lay scattered, pins marking recent disturbances in the veil between realms.

She turned slowly. Her eyes burned with restrained fury. "You have defied every law of the court. You, Seraphina , touched a relic meant only for the Bloodbound. And you, Cassian, knew of this and kept it from me."

Seraphina stepped forward, despite the weight of the Queen's stare. "With all due respect, Your Majesty, the relic chose me. I didn't force it."

The Crimson Rose does not choose lightly," the Queen replied coldly. "Nor without cost."

Cassian's jaw tightened. "What's done is done. The Rose is awake. And if what we saw tonight was any sign-the Pact is ready to strike. We don't have time for politics."

Maelira's gaze shifted between them. "You speak of urgency while you stand on the edge of treason." "Treason?" Seraphina's voice rose, fire flashing in her eyes. "Is it treason to stop a kingdom from falling?

The Queen walked closer. "You think you understand what power you carry? That Rose does not just awaken magic it remembers. It binds. And it punishes. Do you feel it yet, Seraphina ? The pull toward things you do not understand?"

A heavy silence fell. Seraphina  swallowed. Yes. She felt it. The way her dreams twisted now. The way her emotions sparked things she couldn't explain. The fire wasn't just magic it was memory. And something darker.

"I feel it," Seraphina  whispered.

Maelira's voice softened just slightly. "Then you must learn to control it or destroy it."

Cassian stepped forward. "There's no destroying it now."

The Queen looked tired. Older than ever. "Then she must be prepared. And watched."

Seraphina  bristled. "Watched?"

The Queen nodded. "From this day forward, you are bound to this court. You will not leave Elysara without escort. And Cassian your command is revoked. You are to remain as her guard, nothing more."

 "That's not fair," Cassian growled.

"It's not meant to be fair," Maelira said, her eyes narrowing. "It's meant to keep us all alive."

Another long silence stretched.

Then the Queen turned back to the window. "You may go. And pray, both of you, that the fire inside her does not burn down what's left of this kingdom.

Seraphina's chest tightened as they were dismissed.

They walked out in silence, hearts heavier than when they entered. The night wind brushed her face, and for a moment, she leaned into Cassian's shoulder.

"I don't want to be a weapon," she whispered.

Cassian looked down at her. "Then be the spark that changes everything.

And in the shadows behind them, a cloaked figure watched. Eyes glowing faintly red. The Pact had already infiltrated Elysara.

The fire was only just beginning.
