Chapter 12

The quiet of dawn was deceptive.

Seraphina sat alone in the east wing ancient library, its stained glass windows casting pale colors across the floor. The morning sun should've felt warm, but a persistent chill wrapped around her like a warning. She stared at the pages of an old tome, words blurring together. Everything she read spoke of ruin. Of the Crimson Rose awakening only in times of great peril of prophecy, fire, and blood.

And war.

She closed the book, unable to read another word.

Footsteps approached. Cassian entered, armor half clasped, hair still damp from washing. He looked more exhausted than she'd ever seen him, like the weight of watching her was already breaking him down.

"She has guards shadowing me now," Seraphina murmured without looking up. "Even in the gardens."

Cassian crossed to her, placing a steaming mug in front of her. "She's afraid. Of the relic. Of what you might become."

Seraphina stared at the drink. "And are you?"

He hesitated. "I'm afraid of what they'll make you become."

Inside the forge, heat pulsed from the molten coals. Borric poured ale into dented mugs and sat.

"You once said you worked with Relic Bearers before," Cassian said. "That you forged bindings and seals."

"I did," Borric replied. "Most of 'em didn't live long."

Seraphina's fingers curled. "What happens to them?"

"They burn. The Rose gives power, but it feeds off pain. Old magic like that it remembers too much. Unless you're anchored, it consumes you. Mind, body, soul."

Seraphina swallowed hard. "And how do I stop that?"

Borric looked her in the eye. "You need the anchor. The original bond. The Rite of Tempering. But the Queen forbade that ritual decades ago."

"Why?"

"Because the last one who tried it tore a rift between realms."

Cassian shifted beside her. "There has to be a way to perform the Rite safely."

Borric sighed. "You'd need a Seer. A true one. And a place where the Veil is thin. Dangerous territory."

Seraphina stood. "Then we find both. I'm not waiting to lose myself."

The dwarf gave a low, knowing look. "Careful, girl. The fire will give you strength but it will also tempt you to burn everything in your path."

That night, as they returned to the palace under cloak of shadow, Seraphina caught movement from the tower above. A flicker eyes watching. A chill settled in her bones.

They weren't alone.

Inside her chambers, she found a note tucked into the seam of her pillow.

"Meet me in the garden ruins at midnight. Come alone. -R."

Cassian frowned when she showed it to him. "It could be a trap."

"It could be the truth," she whispered.

At midnight, moonlight bathed the ruined courtyard behind the palace.Seraphina slipped out in silence, cloak drawn, the rose humming under the skin.

The old garden was wild, thorns and stone tangled in forgotten beauty.By the broken fountain stood a figure cloaked in violet and silver, hood low.

Seraphina's breath caught as the veiled figure turned each movement graceful, laced with purpose.

Rhiannon.

Her presence was both eerie and majestic. Her eyes, visible beneath the sheer dark veil, burned like molten silver. Despite the quiet tension in the air, there was no threat in her posture only recognition. And sorrow.

"You've come far, daughter of fire," Rhiannon said, her voice like wind through leaves.

Seraphina stood taller, though her heart thundered in her chest. "You're her. The Queen of Shadows."

Rhiannon inclined her head slightly. "I was, once. Now, I am what remains beneath the veil."

The veil shimmered slightly as she stepped closer. "You seek answers. You seek power. But you must understand one always demands the other in return."

"I don't want power for myself," Seraphina said. "I want to stop the Blood Pact. I want to protect those I love."

"And yet," Rhiannon said, circling her, "your fire burns with vengeance. With pain."

Seraphina flinched.

"You carry more than your own burden, child." Rhiannon paused before her. "You carry his too."

 Cassian.

Rhiannon's gaze softened. "He walks beside you now, but the deeper you go, the further he will fall."

Seraphina's fists clenched. "I won't let that happen."

Rhiannon reached out and placed two fingers on Seraphina's forehead. A sharp light pierced through her mind a vision:

Flames engulfing Elysara . Cassian on his knees, chains glowing red around his wrists. The Queen Mother standing amidst smoke, her crown cracked. And Seraphina her eyes alight with fire and sorrow as shadow wings unfurled behind her.

Seraphina gasped and stumbled back.

"What... was that?"

"Your path," Rhiannon said gently. "Should you choose to walk it."

She reached into the folds of her cloak and brought out a thin blade, forged of dark glass and marked with crimson veins.

"The Thornblade," she said. "Born from my final breath. It chooses only one wielder every century."

Seraphina hesitated. "Why me?"

"Because your blood sings with both flame and sorrow. And the veil has whispered your name for years."

The blade pulsed in Rhiannon's hand, then flared as she placed it before Seraphina. Slowly, cautiously, Seraphina reached out and wrapped her fingers around the hilt.

The Thornblade hissed to life its edge gleaming with a spectral flame. Power surged through her, ancient and unfamiliar.

"This will anchor you to what lies ahead," Rhiannon said. "But it will not save you from sacrifice."

Tears gathered in Seraphina 's eyes. "How do I stop the Queen?"

"You must tear out the root," Rhiannon said. "The throne has always fed the curse. Destroy it... and the Blood Pact dies with it."

Seraphina shook her head. "Destroy the throne?"

"You'll know when the time comes."

A sudden rumble echoed through the chamber. Shadows coiled at the edges, and Rhiannon's form began to fade.

"The Queen knows you've come. The veil is thinning. Go now, daughter of fire."

"Wait!" Seraphina cried. "Will I see you again?"

Rhiannon gave a small smile.

"When the rose burns in winter's heart... I will find you."

And with that, she was gone leaving only silence, the Thornblade, and a heart heavy with prophecy.

Seraphina turned back toward the passage. Cassian would be waiting. The storm was closer now.

And this time, she would meet it not as a frightened girl but as a flame no shadow could extinguish.
