Chapter 1

Three months into my pregnancy, I lay on the couch of our modest Brooklyn apartment, one hand resting on the gentle swell of my belly. The afternoon light filtered through half-drawn blinds, casting soft stripes across the hardwood floor. I'd spent the day nesting—rearranging the nursery, folding tiny onesies, feeling the quiet contentment that had become my world since leaving the corporate life behind. Corey would be home soon. I closed my eyes, savoring the stillness.

Then it happened.

A voice—not a voice, but a presence—sliced through my consciousness like lightning. It wasn't my own thoughts; it was something else entirely, something alive and desperate inside me. Images flooded my mind with violent clarity: Corey's face, but not as I knew it—his features twisted with contempt, his eyes cold as he leaned close to a shadowed woman. Their whispers echoed in my skull: "...perfect timing...", "...just before delivery...", "...nothing left to trace...".

I gasped, my hand clutching the fabric of my dress. The presence intensified, showing me more: a newborn, tiny and perfect, wrapped in a hospital blanket, then suddenly sealed in a black garbage bag. The bag being placed in a dumpster. Darkness. Abandonment. Death.

My daughter's past life.

My daughter's killers.

The presence pulsed once more, then receded, leaving me trembling on the couch, tears streaming down my face. I pressed my hands to my stomach, feeling the slight movement of the child inside me—the same child who had just shown me the truth.

"I won't let them hurt you," I whispered, my voice breaking. "Not again. Not ever."

The apartment door clicked open, and I quickly wiped my tears. Corey's familiar footsteps approached, followed by his voice, warm and concerned.

"Avery? Are you okay?" He appeared in the living room doorway, holding a bag of takeout. His dark hair was perfectly styled, his smile practiced and perfect. He crossed the room and bent to kiss my forehead. "You look pale, angel. Rough day?"

I looked up at him—really looked at him—and for the first time, I saw through the mask. The handsome face, the tender eyes, the gentle touch—all of it a performance. The baby's presence surged again: *He's lying. He's always lying.*

"Just tired," I said softly, forcing a smile. "The baby was kicking."

"You and me both," he chuckled, setting the food down. "I've been thinking about names. What do you think of Olivia if it's a girl?"

I nodded, not trusting my voice. Inside, my mind was racing, cataloging every moment I'd missed, every sign I'd ignored. The late nights at the office. The mysterious calls. The way he never quite met my eyes when he spoke of our future.

That night, after Corey left claiming an urgent work call, I sat alone in the dark, the baby's thoughts coming in waves. I saw Corey laughing with Natasha, his executive assistant, his hand possessively on her waist. I saw Rhea, the quiet intern, sliding a manila folder across a café table. I saw numbers—bank transfers, unauthorized withdrawals—scrolling across my mind like a digital ticker.

I opened my laptop and accessed the Porter family trust's secure portal—a system Corey knew nothing about. My fingers flew across the keyboard, pulling security footage from our home system that he'd never known I controlled. I cross-referenced financial discrepancies I'd previously dismissed as accounting errors. The baby's intelligence guided me, pointing me toward the right files, the right dates, the right conversations to review.

By dawn, I had the foundation of a dossier. I showered and dressed in something sharper than my usual soft cardigan—a black blazer that hugged my still-slender frame, a silk blouse that felt like armor. When my phone buzzed with Corey's text—"Morning angel, stuck at office all day, love you"—I replied with a single heart emoji.

Then I got in my car and drove toward Manhattan, toward Porter Capital, toward the confrontation that would end everything.

The baby's presence was quiet now, but I could feel her strength, her certainty. We were going to war.
