Chapter 2

The building rose forty-three stories above Madison Avenue, all glass and steel and my family's name carved into the granite façade. Porter Capital. I'd watched them break ground from my childhood bedroom window. I'd cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony when I was sixteen, wearing a dress that cost more than most people's cars. And now I walked through the revolving doors like a stranger.

The lobby was exactly as I remembered—white marble floors polished to a mirror shine, walls of pale stone, a reception desk that stretched thirty feet across the far wall. Massive screens cycled through corporate achievements: acquisitions, partnerships, quarterly earnings. Every dollar on those screens came from my family's trust. Every success built on capital I controlled.

Nobody looked at me twice.

I wore the black blazer I'd chosen at dawn, my hair pulled back simply, my wedding ring the only jewelry. To everyone here, I was nobody. Corey's wife. The woman from nowhere who'd somehow caught him.

I moved toward the elevator bank, my heels clicking softly against marble.

"Excuse me."

The voice came from behind me—sharp, polished, carrying across the lobby like a blade. I turned.

Natasha Snyder descended the main staircase like she owned it. She was stunning in the way women are when they've weaponized their appearance: tailored navy dress, heels that added three inches, dark hair swept into a flawless chignon. Her smile could've stripped paint.

She crossed the lobby with the confidence of someone who'd never been told no. Employees near the reception desk glanced up, then quickly found reasons to linger. I saw phones being subtly angled. This was going to be a show.

"Mrs. Wallace," Natasha said, her voice pitched just loud enough. Sympathetic. Concerned. Poisonous. "I'm afraid Corey's in meetings all day. He didn't mention you were stopping by."

I met her eyes and said nothing.

Her smile tightened a fraction. She stepped closer, invading the space most people instinctively respect. "He really doesn't appreciate unscheduled visits. It disrupts his workflow." She tilted her head, her gaze sweeping over me with the kind of assessment women do when they're cataloging every flaw. "You should go home and rest. You look tired."

A quiet laugh rippled through the employees watching from the reception area. Someone's phone was definitely recording now.

Natasha's eyes gleamed. She'd drawn blood and she knew it.

"I understand this must be difficult," she continued, her voice dropping to a stage whisper that somehow carried perfectly. "But Corey confides in me. Things he'd never tell his wife." She paused, letting that land. "He needs a woman who understands his world. Someone who can keep up."

Inside me, the baby's presence flared—not words, but a pulse of recognition. *This is the one. She thinks she's won.*

Natasha stepped closer still, close enough that I could smell her perfume—something expensive and cloying. She placed one hand on her own stomach, the gesture slow and deliberate, her fingers spreading across the fabric of her dress.

"Some of us," she said softly, "are building a future with him. A real future."

The implication hung in the air like smoke. The lobby had gone completely silent. Even the receptionist had stopped typing.

Natasha's smile was triumphant now, certain. She was waiting for me to cry, to apologize, to turn and leave so she could return upstairs and tell Corey how easily she'd handled his tiresome wife.

I looked at her hand resting on her stomach. I looked at the employees watching with their phones out. I looked at the screens cycling through my family's achievements on the walls around us.

Then I looked back at Natasha.

"You're pregnant," I said quietly.

Her smile widened. "I'm glowing, aren't I?"

"How far along?"

She blinked, momentarily thrown by the question. "I don't see how that's—"

"How far along," I repeated, my voice still soft, still calm.

She lifted her chin. "Three months. Not that it's any of your business."

I nodded slowly. Three months. The same as me. The baby's presence pulsed again: *She believes it. She actually believes he loves her.*

I felt something shift inside me—not anger, not yet. Something colder. Clearer.

I took a single step forward. Natasha held her ground, but something flickered in her eyes.

"You're right," I said. "Corey does confide in people. He tells them exactly what they need to hear." I paused. "He's very good at that."

Her smile faltered.

"But there's something he didn't tell you," I continued, my voice carrying now, filling the silent lobby. "Something he didn't tell anyone here."

I turned, looking at the employees watching us, at the phones recording, at the screens displaying my family's name.

"My name is Avery Porter," I said clearly. "And I own this building."

The silence that followed was absolute.

Natasha's face went blank. "What?"

"I am the sole chairwoman and one hundred percent shareholder of Porter Capital." I looked back at her. "Every asset. Every account. Every decision." I paused. "Including hiring. And firing."

Someone's phone clattered to the marble floor.

Natasha's mouth opened, then closed. The color drained from her face.

I pulled my phone from my bag and opened a single contact. Marcus Hale. My personal assistant. The only person in this building who'd always known the truth.

"Send Corey Wallace to the lobby," I said when he answered. "He has five minutes."

I ended the call and looked at Natasha.

"Now," I said softly. "Let's talk about that future you're building."
