Chapter 3

Derek called me into the living room on a Tuesday night.

He was standing by the window. Hands in his pockets. Looking out at the water.

"I bought a place in Yakima," he said.

I stopped in the doorway.

Yakima. My hometown. The place I left at eighteen and never went back to.

"Why?" I asked.

He turned. Looked at me like I'd asked something obvious.

"For Skyla," he said. "She likes the quiet. Wanted somewhere away from the city."

My chest tightened.

"You bought her a house," I said slowly. "In my hometown."

"A condo," he corrected. "Luxury building. Downtown. You wouldn't recognize it."

I stood there. My hands were shaking. I pressed them against my thighs.

"That's where I grew up," I said. My voice was thin. "That's where—"

"I know," Derek said. He sat down on the sofa. Crossed one leg over the other. "That's not my problem."

I stared at him.

He picked up his phone. Scrolled. Set it down.

"Look," he said. "I've been patient. I told you the truth about Skyla. I've given you time to adjust. But you need to accept this. She's not going anywhere. Neither am I."

"Accept it," I repeated.

He nodded.

I took a step forward. My legs felt unsteady.

"And if I don't?" I asked.

He looked at me. Really looked. His face was calm. Measured.

"Then I'll make sure everyone knows where you came from," he said.

Silence.

"What?" I whispered.

He leaned back. Folded his hands.

"Your father," he said. "Alvin. The drunk who beat your mother until she couldn't stand. The man who put you in the ER twice before you were sixteen. The reason you slept in your car senior year of high school."

My throat closed.

"Every profile they write about me," Derek continued, "every interview, every investor pitch—I'll make sure they know. I'll tell them my wife came from a household of violence and alcoholism. That her father was a piece of shit who couldn't hold a job or stay sober long enough to remember her birthday."

I couldn't breathe.

"They'll ask questions," he said. "Reporters love that kind of thing. Rags-to-riches stories with a dark twist. They'll dig. Find court records. Police reports. Maybe even track him down for a quote."

He stood up. Walked toward me.

"So here's the deal," he said. "You can leave quietly. No lawyers. No drama. Walk away clean. Or you can fight me, and I'll make sure the whole world knows exactly what kind of trash you crawled out of."

He stopped in front of me. Close enough that I could smell his cologne.

"Your choice," he said.

Then he walked past me. Down the hall. Into the bedroom.

The door closed.

I stood there.

My hands were still pressed against my thighs. My nails dug into the fabric of my jeans.

I thought about the night I told him. We were under the overpass. It was raining. I was crying. He held me and said it wasn't my fault. Said he'd never let anyone hurt me again.

I believed him.

I walked to the guest room. Sat on the bed.

Pressed my palms flat against my legs. Felt them shaking.

I stared at the wall.

The most intimate wound I'd ever trusted him with. The thing I told him in the dark when I thought love meant safety.

He'd turned it into a weapon.

Loaded it.

Aimed it at my head.

I sat there for a long time. My hands stopped shaking eventually. My breathing slowed.

I didn't cry.

I went still. The way I always did when I was most afraid.

But this time, something else happened.

Beneath the stillness, something shifted.

Not rage. Not yet.

Something colder.

I thought about the overpass. The river. The three jobs. The miscarriage. The hospital room where I bled alone.

I thought about the gala. The champagne glass. The navy gown.

A stray trying to pass as a purebred.

I pressed my hand against my throat. The radiation marks were faint now. Almost invisible.

Two wars.

One I was losing.

One I was dying from.

I closed my eyes.

When I opened them, the room was darker. The house was silent.

I stood up. Walked to the closet. Pulled out my phone.

I googled "divorce attorney Seattle."

Scrolled through the results. Read reviews. Clicked on a firm downtown. Aggressive litigation. High success rate.

I filled out the contact form. Typed my name. My number. A single sentence in the message box:

"I need help."

I hit send.

Set the phone on the nightstand.

Lay down in the dark.

My hand on my throat.

Breathing.

Waiting.

The weapon Derek aimed at me was loaded with my own truth.

But he'd forgotten something.

I knew his truths too.

Every single one.
