While I Was Dying, My Husband Replaced Me

8.8 / 10.0
A cold examination room holds a devastating truth: the scan confirms her mortality, and the metallic dread of death lingers in the air. But the real horror waits beyond her illness—her husband's betrayal, and a replacement poised in the shadows. This modern mystery romance weaves a web of obsession and buried secrets, where each fragile heartbeat might be her final one, and the truth threatens to consume everything she thought she knew.

While I Was Dying, My Husband Replaced Me Chapter 1

The examination room smelled like disinfectant and something else. Something metallic. I sat on the paper-covered table and tried not to think about how the crinkle of it under my legs sounded too loud.

Dr. Rachel Yuen stood by the lightbox. She was maybe forty. Black hair pulled back tight. White coat. No jewelry except a watch. She pointed at the scan with a pen.

"Here," she said. "And here."

Two shadows on my throat. Gray against darker gray.

I stared at them. They didn't look like much.

"Early stage," Dr. Yuen said. Her voice was calm. Matter-of-fact. Like she was reading a grocery list. "Treatable. We caught it before it spread. That's good."

I nodded. My hands were in my lap. I realized I was pressing my thumbs together hard enough that the nails went white.

"We'll start with radiation," she continued. "Possibly chemo depending on how you respond. There's a chance of permanent vocal changes. Hoarseness. Difficulty swallowing. We'll monitor closely."

The irony hit me like cold water. The thing trying to kill me was in my throat. The place where my voice lived.

I almost laughed. Almost.

"Do you have questions?" Dr. Yuen asked.

I shook my head.

"Do you have someone who can come with you to the next appointment? A partner? Family?"

"No," I said. My voice came out flat. "Just me."

She looked at me for a long moment. Then she nodded and handed me a folder. "Treatment plan. Schedule. Financial information. Read it tonight. Call if you need clarification."

I took the folder. It was heavier than I expected.

In the elevator, I peeled off the hospital bracelet and shoved it in my purse. The fluorescent lights hummed. A man in scrubs stood in the corner scrolling his phone. I watched the numbers descend. Six. Five. Four.

When the doors opened, I stepped out into the lobby. Through the glass, I could see the rain coming down. Seattle rain. Thin and steady and cold.

I walked to my car. Got in. Sat there with the folder on my lap and the rain drumming on the roof.

I didn't call anyone.

The house on Mercer Island was quiet when I got home. I parked in the driveway and sat for a minute looking at it. Glass and steel. Clean lines. A house that cost more than most people made in a lifetime.

Derek's car was in the garage.

I walked in through the side door. Set my purse on the counter. The kitchen was all white marble and stainless steel. It always felt cold.

Derek was sitting at the table. Hands folded. Posture straight. Like he was in a boardroom.

He didn't ask how my day was. Didn't ask where I'd been.

"We need to talk," he said.

I looked at him. His hair was perfect. His shirt was pressed. He looked like the man in the magazine profiles. The self-made visionary. The guy who built something from nothing.

I pulled out a chair and sat down.

"I've been seeing someone," he said. No preamble. No softness. Just the facts. "Her name is Skyla. It's been six months."

I stared at him. My hands were on the table. I didn't move them.

"I didn't plan it," he continued. His voice was calm. Reasonable. "But I can't keep pretending. Every time I look at you, I see the overpass. The sleeping bag. The hunger. I see everything I'm trying to move past."

He paused. Looked at me like he was waiting for a reaction.

I didn't give him one.

"You remind me of a time I don't want to remember," he said. "And I can't live like that anymore."

The words hung in the air. I felt them settle somewhere deep. Not in my chest. Lower. In the place where things go when they're too heavy to hold.

I thought about the frozen river. The night I pulled him out. His lips were blue. His hands couldn't grip. I dragged him onto the bank and pressed my coat against his chest until the ambulance came.

"Do you remember the river?" I asked. My voice was quiet.

He looked away.

I waited.

He didn't answer.

I reached up and touched the chain around my neck. The soda tab ring was under my shirt. I pressed it against my sternum. Felt the metal warm from my skin.

I didn't say anything else.

I stood up. Walked to the guest room. Closed the door.

I lay down on the bed in the dark. Hand on my throat. The folder from Dr. Yuen was still in my purse downstairs.

Two wars, I thought. One I could talk about. One I couldn't.

I closed my eyes and listened to the rain.

The next morning, I called Seattle General from my car. Scheduled the first radiation appointment for Thursday at seven a.m. Paid the deposit from an account Derek didn't monitor. An old checking account I'd kept from before we were married.

I went back inside. Made coffee. Derek was already gone.

I sat at the table and opened the treatment folder. Read every page. Consent forms. Side effects. Timelines. Risks.

Dr. Yuen had written her cell number on the inside cover. "Call anytime," it said.

I signed the forms. Left the emergency contact line blank.

On Thursday, I drove to the hospital before dawn. The waiting room was empty except for an old man with an oxygen tank. I checked in. Filled out more paperwork. A nurse called my name.

The radiation room was cold. I lay on the table. They positioned my head. Drew marks on my neck with a marker.

"Stay very still," the tech said.

I did.

The machine hummed. I stared at the ceiling and thought about nothing.

When it was over, I drove home. Derek was in the shower. I made breakfast. Set his plate on the counter.

He came downstairs in a suit. Picked up his coffee.

"I have a meeting in Bellevue," he said. "I'll be late."

"Okay," I said.

He left.

I touched my throat. The skin felt warm. I went to the guest room and lay down.

Two wars.

I closed my eyes and breathed.
