Chapter 3

The whispers started the morning after the café. I heard them through the mind-link before I even opened my eyes—fragments of conversation that wolves thought they were keeping private, but the pack bond carried everything if you knew how to listen.

*Did you hear? The Luna attacked Aylin.*

*She's pregnant. The Omega's daughter is carrying the Alpha's pup.*

*Maybe the Moon Goddess made a mistake.*

I lay in the healer's ward cot and pressed my hand to my sternum. My pup was still there. Still safe. Still the secret that kept me breathing.

When I finally walked through the pack house that afternoon, the silence was worse than the whispers. Wolves I'd trained, wolves I'd mentored, wolves I'd stood beside during rogue raids—they all looked away. Young Deltas who used to ask me about combat stances now studied the floor when I passed. The mind-link, once full of greetings and check-ins directed at their Luna, went quiet the moment I entered a room.

I was being erased. Slowly. Deliberately. And Spencer was allowing it.

I found Nora in the kitchens two days later. She was alone, chopping vegetables with more force than necessary. She didn't look up when I walked in.

"They're saying you're unstable," she said quietly. "That grief over not conceiving made you violent."

"I know."

"Spencer's not correcting them."

"I know that too."

Nora's knife hit the cutting board hard. "Then what are you going to do?"

I leaned against the counter. My legs were steadier than they'd been a week ago. The cold place inside me was growing. "I need to see the pack charter."

She blinked. "The legal charter?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I need to know the rules before I break them."

Nora studied my face for a long moment. Then she nodded. "The archives room. Third floor of the pack house. No one goes up there except during Council meetings."

"Can you get me in?"

"I can get you the key." She wiped her hands on a towel. "But if Spencer finds out—"

"He won't," I said. "Not until I want him to."

I waited until after midnight. The pack house was quiet, most wolves already asleep or out on patrol. I took the key Nora had slipped me during dinner and climbed the stairs to the third floor. My footsteps were silent. Warrior training I hadn't used in three years.

The archives room smelled like old paper and dust. Shelves lined every wall, packed with leather-bound volumes and rolled scrolls. I found the Silverfang legal charter on the center table, as though someone had been reviewing it recently. Probably Marcus, Spencer's Beta. He was meticulous about pack law.

I opened it carefully. The pages were thick, the ink faded in places. I skipped past the sections on territory boundaries and trade agreements. I wasn't interested in those. I was looking for something specific.

I found it on page forty-seven.

*Mate Bond Severance and Luna Renunciation: Formal Provisions*

My heart kicked hard against my ribs. I pulled the volume closer and read by lamplight.

The language was precise. Clinical. A mate bond could be severed through formal rejection—a specific set of words spoken aloud by both parties, witnessed by the Pack Council or recorded in legal documentation signed by the Alpha. A Luna could renounce her title through written decree, provided the Alpha acknowledged receipt.

But there was a clause I hadn't expected. If the rejection was initiated by the Luna and the Alpha signed documentation accepting the severance, the bond would snap immediately. No Council mediation required. No prolonged negotiation. Just gone.

I read it three times to be sure. Then I pulled out a blank sheet of paper from the desk drawer and began copying the exact wording. My handwriting was steady. My wolf was quiet. She understood what I was doing even if she didn't like it.

When I finished, I folded the paper and tucked it into my pocket. Then I replaced the charter exactly as I'd found it and slipped back downstairs.

Nora was waiting in the healer's ward when I returned. She looked up from the cot where she'd been sitting. "Did you find it?"

I nodded.

"And?"

"I found a way out."

Her jaw tightened. "Kailani, if you sever the bond while you're pregnant—"

"I know the risks," I said quietly. "But staying bonded to him is a worse one."

She didn't argue. She just pulled me into a brief, fierce hug. Then she left.

I sat on the cot and pressed both hands to my belly. The pup was still there. Still mine. I whispered to it in the dark. "I'm going to get us out. I promise."

The next morning, Nora found me in the corridor outside the healer's ward. Her face was tight. Worried.

"What's wrong?"

"Aylin's been asking questions about the training course," she said quietly. "The high-elevation obstacle run. She's been walking the route. Mapping it."

My wolf stirred. Alert. "When?"

"Yesterday. And the day before. One of the kitchen staff saw her."

I felt the cold place inside me sharpen into focus. "She's planning something."

"That's what I thought." Nora glanced down the corridor, checking for listeners. "You're still overseeing training sessions, right? As Luna?"

"Technically."

"Then inspect the equipment. Before the next session. Don't let her have the chance."

I nodded slowly. "I will."

But even as I said it, I felt the unease settle into my bones. Aylin didn't make moves without calculating every angle. If she was mapping the training course, she already had a plan. And I was going to have to be faster.
