Chapter 4

The morning was clear and cold, the kind of sharp blue sky that made the Cascades look close enough to touch. I checked the obstacle course myself before dawn—rope by rope, bolt by bolt, the way I'd been trained to do a hundred times before I ever wore the Luna pendant. Everything held. I remember thinking that. Everything held.

Then Tyler went up the north wall.

He was seventeen, all elbows and eagerness, the kind of Delta who asked too many questions and worked twice as hard as anyone else to make up for his rank. I'd pulled him aside just last week and told him he had the makings of a Gamma someday. He'd grinned like I'd handed him the moon.

The rigging snapped six feet from the top.

I heard the crack before I understood what it meant. Then I was running, and the pack was screaming, and Tyler was falling through open air with nothing beneath him but packed dirt and stone. He hit wrong. I heard the sound his body made and I will hear it for the rest of my life.

I got to him first. My hands found the break in his leg, the wrongness of his ribs, and I shouted for the healer while my wolf clawed at the inside of my chest, desperate and useless. He was breathing. Barely. His eyes rolled toward me, glassy with shock, and he whispered my name like I could fix it.

I couldn't fix it. I could only kneel in the dirt with his blood on my hands and wait.

The Council convened within the hour.

Spencer stood at the head of the long table in the meeting hall, composed, grave, every inch the Alpha the pack needed to see. Beside him sat a visiting Alpha from the Cedarfall territory—Alpha Whitlock, brought in for "impartiality," Spencer had said, though I noticed he'd chosen a mediator who owed him a favor from a border dispute two winters back.

"I inspected the rigging myself last week," Spencer said, his voice level, sorrowful. "I raised concerns about wear on the north line. Kailani assured me she'd handled it." He paused, let the silence do its work. "She's been erratic this week. Unwell. I noticed it myself this morning—distracted, short-tempered with the trainees."

I stood at the edge of the room, still in my bloodied clothes, and listened to him build a version of me that had never existed.

"That's not true." My voice came out steadier than I felt. "I checked every line before sunrise. You weren't even on the training grounds this week."

Spencer didn't look at me. He looked at Alpha Whitlock. "You see the pattern."

Whitlock's expression didn't waver. Alpha to Alpha, aura against aura—my testimony didn't stand a chance against the weight Spencer carried into that room, the practiced grief in his voice, the way every wolf at that table had spent three years believing whatever he told them. Whitlock nodded slowly. "Given the severity of the injury, detention is warranted. Pending further Council review."

I looked at the faces around that table. Marcus, Spencer's Beta, wouldn't meet my eyes. Nora sat near the back, jaw clenched so tight I could see the muscle jumping in her cheek. No one spoke for me.

The guards who dragged me toward the cellar stairs had saluted me a hundred times. I'd trained two of them myself. Now their hands were rough on my arms, their eyes carefully blank, following orders they didn't ask questions about.

The underground cells smelled like stone and old rust. No windows. No warmth. Just a cot bolted to the wall and a drain in the floor that told me exactly what this room was built for.

By nightfall the fever came. It rolled through me in waves, my wolf straining against the sickness, trying to protect the pup even as my own body burned and shook. I heard footsteps on the stairs and thought—stupidly, desperately—that it might be a healer.

It was a bucket of ice water instead.

It hit me full in the chest, knocking the breath out of me, soaking through what little I was wearing. I gasped and curled toward the wall, teeth chattering, and heard laughter from the corridor.

"Alpha's orders," one of them said. "Remind the Luna of her place."

"She almost killed Tyler," another muttered. "She's lucky it's only this."

I didn't correct them. I didn't have the strength to. I pressed my palm flat against my sternum, the way I'd done a hundred times in the healer's ward, and felt my own pulse hammering beneath my ribs, felt the smaller, stubborn flutter of something else beneath that.

"Hold on," I whispered into the dark, so quiet even my own wolf had to strain to hear it. "We hold on."

The cold pressed in from every direction. The fever climbed. And somewhere above me, in a warm room with a fire lit, Spencer was telling the pack that this was mercy.
