Chapter 3

The land Kael granted me was at the eastern edge of Ashford Ridge territory. Not the best land. Not the worst. A clearing with good water access and enough shelter from the wind that a tent would hold through winter. It was enough.

I built the first structure myself. A medical station. Four walls, a roof, shelves for supplies. I worked with my hands because my wolf was still silent and because I needed to feel something solid taking shape under my effort. The first week, no one came. The second week, a rogue she-wolf with an infected leg wound appeared at dawn and left before I could ask her name. The third week, two Omegas cast out of a fractured pack to the south arrived carrying a pup with pneumonia.

I treated the pup. I gave the Omegas food and a place to sleep. I did not ask them to stay. But they did.

By the end of the first month, the sanctuary had a name that I had not given it. Wolves passing through the borderlands called it the Healer's Ground. I did not correct them.

The work was genuine. I am a Healer. I cannot see a wolf in pain and choose to do nothing. But I am also my mother's daughter, and my mother taught me that information is a form of care. Every wolf who came through carried something with them — not just wounds, but words. Pack movements. Names. Rumors that traveled faster than official reports.

I listened. I catalogued. I did not push.

Six months in, a displaced Delta from a pack near Silverfang's western border came through with a dislocated shoulder. I set it. He stayed two days to rest. On the second night, over a fire outside the medical station, he mentioned offhand that Silverfang's eastern wards were flickering badly now. That the pack had brought in a new Healer, but the wards would not hold for her the way they used to.

I kept my face neutral. I asked no follow-up questions. But I filed it.

Three weeks later, another wolf — an Omega who had been exiled for refusing a mating arrangement — told me that Rylee Castillo was now called Luna in every formal assembly. That Lily's death was recorded in the pack registry as natural immune failure. That no investigation had ever been opened.

I thanked her for the information. I treated her sprained wrist. I did not let her see my hands shake until after she left.

By the end of the first year, I had confirmed three things: Rylee had fully consolidated her position. Lily's murder had been successfully buried. And Dr. Zaid Morales was still operating as Silverfang's pack-adjacent therapist, his complicity protected by professional distance and Paxton's refusal to look at what he had enabled.

I wrote it all down. I sealed it. I kept building.

---

Elara Voss's name came to me through a rogue who had passed through Silverfang's southern border two months prior. She mentioned, casually, that the old Healer had left. That no one talked about why. That Elara was living somewhere east now, in one of the smaller settlements, and that she did not take visitors.

I found her location through three more intermediaries. I did not go to her directly. I sent a message through a wolf I trusted — a former Beta's mate who had been cast out for defending an Omega and who understood the value of discretion.

The message was simple: *I know what you smelled in the pack house. I know she threatened you. I am not asking you to act yet. I am asking you to know that I am building something that will hold.*

I did not expect a response. I got one three weeks later. A single word, carried back by the same intermediary: *Received.*

It was enough.

Over the next four months, I sent three more messages. Each one contained a piece of the evidence I was assembling. The wolfsbane extract. The timeline of Lily's immune cascade. The testimony I had gathered from displaced wolves who had been in Silverfang during the weeks before my rejection. I did not ask Elara to do anything. I simply let her see the case taking shape.

The third message included a question: *Will you meet me?*

She agreed.

---

We met in a neutral settlement halfway between Ashford Ridge and her current territory. A small trading post with a tavern that did not ask questions. I arrived first. I took a table in the back corner where I could see the door.

Elara walked in twenty minutes later. She was thinner than I remembered. Her hair was shorter. Her hands were in her pockets, and she did not make eye contact with anyone as she crossed the room.

She sat down across from me without preamble.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she said, very quietly, "I smelled it the day after Lily died."

I did not move.

"Trace wolfsbane in the ventilation system," she continued. Her voice was steady, but her hands were not. "Concentrated near the nursery. Consistent with prolonged exposure. I documented it. I was going to bring it to Paxton."

She stopped.

"Rylee came to me that night," Elara said. "She did not threaten me directly. She just made it very clear that my continued safety in Silverfang depended on my professional discretion. She said the pack could not afford instability. That Karla was already unstable. That raising questions would only make things worse."

Elara's hands were shaking visibly now.

"I told myself I was protecting the pack," she whispered. "I told myself I did not have proof. I told myself a lot of things."

She finally looked at me.

"I am sorry, Karla. I am so sorry."

I reached across the table and placed my hand over hers. Not to comfort. To steady.

"Will you testify?" I asked.

Her breath caught.

"I do not know if I can," she said. "I do not know if I am strong enough."

I did not let go of her hand.

"You do not have to be strong," I said. "You just have to tell the truth. I will build the rest."

Elara closed her eyes.

"I need more time," she said finally.

I nodded.

"Take it," I said. "But know this: I am not stopping. With or without you, I am bringing this before the Lycan Council. If you testify, your voice will be the one that makes it undeniable. If you do not, I will find another way. But I would rather do this with you."

I stood. I left payment for both our drinks on the table. I walked to the door.

Behind me, Elara's voice was barely audible.

"Karla."

I stopped.

"I will think about it."

I did not turn around. But I let her hear my answer.

"That is all I am asking."

I walked out into the cold air and pressed two fingers to the inside of my wrist. My pulse was there. Steady.

I had a sanctuary. I had evidence. And now I had a witness who was beginning to remember that silence has a cost.

It was enough to keep building.
